James Ahab said about Andre Matos (of Angra): << I think he's an average prog singer with many annoying tendancies in a band that would be better without him, but still is a decent band and no more. >>

Opinions are opinions. But this is a fact: Andre is the guy that put this band together and at least for their first two albums, he was the guy that overlooked all the arrangements and has always taken the final decisions about the stuff. Some even say that the band members other than Rafael Bittencourt were for a long time just hired guns.

My skull could be leaking fairly profusely on this one, but I think they were talking about 12th notes in the domain of rhythm, not 12-tones (as opposed to 8?) which would be in the domain of frequency? IIRC, only people with perfect pitch can hear 12-tones :)

Schoenberg was definitely wacked though! I remember seeing one of his albums in the music library back in college. The back cover went into great detail about reccommended speaker placement when listening to the album. I think he suggested something like 8 speakers :)

Yes, but that's not necessarily instinct. Babies don't cry *instinctively* because they need something. Crying itself is an instinctive behavior, but crying because they NEED something is a learned behavior. Babies (newborns) cry, simply because it's the only method they have of communicating. If something is wrong, they haven't learned to differentiate between "I'm hungry" and "The light's too bright" and "I slept on my arm funny" and so on. Eventually they learn to differentiate these things (and, as every parent learns, they develop a different cry for each), and they also learn that when they cry, mommy and daddy fix what's wrong. ___Pat Sullivan_______________ Email: psull@ici.net ICQ: 23499229 WWW: http://www.just-like.nu

..or 'How I Spent My Christmas Vacation'...

man, what a week! i'm truly surprised that i have any hearing left!! i had the week between christmas and new year's day off from my job, and i managed to get people to ferry me (or i mass transited myself) to all 5 shows! they were all great, but the events at the last show were awesome!! but let's start at the beginning...

Birch Hell - got there at about 7:00, and told my ride that the show would be done at about 11:15 or so...what i didn't know was that the guys weren't going to take the stage until about 11:25! it was a great show (well, what i saw of it...), but since i was running late, i bailed at about 12:30 (i think i missed the last 3 songs or so...). from what i've heard from people that i talked to that attended multiple shows, this show was the least impressive...

Electric Factory - got bad directions from mapquest which ended up sending me to the far opposite end of the street (about 60 or 70 blocks across town)...by the time we got to the place we had missed the first song, but we got to stand on some bleachers near the back, so we had a pretty good view...the only performance in all 5 shows of 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' and the impromptu performance of 'Nightmare Cinema' were awesome!

Toad's Place - got there just before a huge rush of people, so i got a good spot on line...also, i had never been there before, so i wasn't aware of 'the net', and apparently, there were quite a few people in front of me that were under 21, so my friend and i got a really awesome spot right at the stage in front of John P...this was an excellent show (i think this was the first show at which they performed the 'Different Strings/Analog Kid/La Villa Strangiato' medley...). also, the stage was only about 2 feet high, so there were quite a few times during the show when we got a faceful of John's AMAZING guitar ability...it was almost better than being at a clinic!

    ..to be continued...

Thought some of you might find this interesting. It was a major story last night on the tv and radio stations here in the SF Bay Area. The way that the talking heads on TV put it, it sounded like Metallica was being credited for creating a new genre of music. But then again, who pays attention to the TV news anyway? (Isn't that how it always works? The inventor doesn't get credit, only the person that manages to bring it to the mainstream.)

Hopefully Metallica will use material from RtL, MoP, and AJFA... It would work better in this format. They may finally be going in the "right" direction. ;o)

Heavy metal rockers team up with symphony

BY DAVID KLIGMAN Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Metallica, the heavy metal group known for the head-banging hit ``Enter Sandman,'' has a new gig with the most unlikely of collaborators: the San Francisco Symphony.

About 100 symphony members will back up the band and composer Michael Kamen for two shows of all-Metallica songs on April 21-22 at the Berkeley Community Theater.

Kamen, who has provided orchestration for such artists as David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Pink Floyd, insisted the Metallica project was no joke and had been in the works for two years.

``This is not going to be the easy-listening version of Metallica,'' Kamen said Wednesday. ``The idea is to have Metallica be Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony be the San Francisco Symphony. I think there's more in common than there are differences, although there are some pretty spectacular differences.''

Those differences may become apparent as organizers stage a show that caters to the sophisticated symphony-goer and the metal crowd -- though drummer Lars Ulrich admitted the concerts will attract mostly Metallica fans. Lead singer James Hetfield jokingly suggested that Metallica fans combine the mosh and orchestra pits and include flaming batons as props.

And then there's the issue of attire.

``Maybe Metallica will be in black tie and the orchestra will be in...,'' Ulrich began.

``Black leather!'' chimed in lead guitarist Kirk Hammett.

Among the pieces being prepared for the 23-song set list are ``Devil's Dance,'' ``Fight Fire With Fire'' and ``Nothing Else Matters.'' The shows will be recorded and may be released as a CD.

The concerts will be performed in Berkeley because Davies Symphony Hall was already booked and band members felt the hall's stage and acoustics weren't suitable.

This isn't the first time the symphony has teamed with a rock band. Former members of the Grateful Dead performed with the symphony under the direction of conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.

But will symphony lovers join metalheads for such a collaboration? Retired consultant Grant Horne, a season-ticket subscriber for 20 years, has never heard a Metallica song but thinks the project is a good idea.

``This will open the door to a lot of people who would not typically come to the symphony,'' Horne said. ``And it'll open our ears to a lot of music we're not used to listening to unless our grandkids force us to.''

Symphony members, just as unfamiliar with Metallica, also were looking forward to the shows.

``I remember seeing a Guns N' Roses video not long ago that had some string players in it,'' said Tina King, who plays the viola. ``I think people will be surprised that it can be meshed together.''

If any of you ever have a problem with viewing UACM, please email me PRIVATELY so I can look into it IMMEDIATELY. Don't simply post about it on the Ytsejam, because there COULD be a problem on YOUR end instead of the website...

Anyway, it has to be Pat's PC because I only use basic HTML on UACM (to make sure everything works for everyone). Also, if something WAS wrong I would have gotten a buncha private emails about it already.

For example... I got 5 notes from people who couldn't reach UACM when John Martin upgraded its server not too long ago. I think the downtime was only about 30 minutes. :-)

Hi there, I just wanted to make sure that Bernardo didn't mix up nationality and religion. You wrote // Austrian (jew in fact)//. So he was of Austrian nationality and of Jewish religion. Good, just wanted to have everybody on the right side. On the other hand, the 12-tone scale leading to 12-tone music has nothing to do with 12th -notes. 12th notes are (or are not) divisions of a full note. 12 tone music is composed after the rule of not using one of the 12 notes(c,c#,d,d#,e,f,f#,....a#,h) twice, before all the others are used once. THere's even more rules, depending on how strict you wanna be into it.

On the second thought concerning Rammstein's German lyrics, which although I don't like it and do not own the disc gave a pondering, I have a new view for all not German speaking folks. I hope it has not been discussed.

DU HAST means YOU HAVE DU HASST means YOU HATE

Now, in the song it goes as following. Du hasst, Du hasst, Du hasst mich. That leads to the translation (hence the spelling of HASST) YOU HATE, YOU HATE, YOU HATE ME. I think we've been that far already, right?

BUT, it goes //du, du hast, du hast mich, du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nicht gesagt//

the correct translation of the new part is, YOU HAVE ASKED ME AND I DID NOT RESPOND he just adds a new word and creates a creative wordgame. du hast is hence spelled DU HAST

The afore mentioned Satch video turned out to be G3 w/UJ Roth adn M Schenker btw.

M new years resolution is to buy more DT discs and believe that they'll turn big in July, with a billboard ranking for the new album of 15 !!

If JM doesn't phone home and get's picked up that is.

    Later, seb
