    Hey everyone,

If you would like to download an MP3 of Hell's Kitchen as it
was performed live at Irving Plaza, New York City, NY on 12/29/98,
    go to:

    http://dreamtheater.mit.edu/

You must be registered to download the MP3, but registration is
simple and hassle-free! The whole point of being registered is for
the Dream Theater tourography / set list database which will soon
have the 1997-1998 dates added tonight and the set lists soon to
    follow in the next week.

    Enjoy.

Actually, his name is Matias, and he doesn't run the Dutch fan club. He's a
HUGE DT fan from Germany and he was in town for the holiday shows. To date,
he's seen a total of 56 DT shows, and the boys dedicated "Peruvian Skies" to
him at the end of the Poughkeepsie show. I believe he's in "5 Years in a Live
Time," but I haven't watched that tape since meeting him, so I don't recall
when he shows up. And since my stuff is packed away in preparation for my
move later this month, I can't get to it, either! D'oh!

Anyhow, just thought I'd clarify! :)

it'd be a challenge, of course, but i'm a really good guitarist so i could handle it. :) and of course after we played it normal, after all of the applause and everything, we'd have to do the mortal kombat remix of 4'33". in honor of the composer, you see. :) moo.

    1) I have listened to Rob Halford and own four Priest albums 2) I have listened to Ronnie James Dio and own five Dio albums 3) I have listened to Pavarotti and own eight discs with Pavarotti in starring roles 4) It *still* took me some time to get used to Matos' voice, although I love it now. 5) You're being a dick. And maybe it IS his voice. Some people don't care for it. Deal with it. People have used this "you should buy a better stereo" argument before and it's utterly full of holes. I don't give a good goddamn how poor the stereo equipment is, buying a better stereo or adjusting the controls isn't going to magically turn the music (or vocals) that you're listening to into something you loved -- if you hated it before.

    >Has anybody complained about James LaBrie singing in "Voices"?

Yes, numerous times. Did you miss the recent complaints, right here, about James' performance on OIAL, specifically on "Voices"?

    >Speaking of DT and Awake, if you miss Petrucci playing that fast, heavy >guitar in Awake, don't miss Angra's Fireworks specially Paradise and >Speed, it really sounds like Petrucci in the solos.

"Fireworks" is in fact a great album but I don't think that Loureiro and Bittencourt sound like Petrucci does; their tone and attack are completely different. The solos in "Extreme Dream", though, are very tasty and feature some very skillful interplay between the two.

<<2). Lefty playing righty. We had a long ass discussion on #ytsejam about this. Anyone having trouble with this, please ignore Ayami's last post. The motion of writing with either hand is not the same as picking (though similar) and it's really not going to cure anything... just going to waste ink and paper. I have taught a few lefties who insist on denying their genetic makeup, and there IS in my experience a natural disadvantage, in that you don't have the same type of control of your right hand when you're a lefty, the same way as I don't have that type of control with my left. MICHAEL.ANGELO. talked about this very thing (he's the most ambidextrous goutarist I've ever seen) and explained that in order to play really fast, he had to devise a special picking method. I'm not sure that's necessary to do... mpm (I don't know your real name) is up to 160 without that technique. I imagine if you work very hard, you can get past that picking issue, but it'll probably be more trouble than had you played lefty. Once you've committed 5 years towards playing right handed though, there's no way you're going to be willing to flip your strings upside down and play with the other hand. So there ARE some issues, but it's not exactly clear to me what has to be done to overcome them. I would hope that structured practice is enough.>>

I talked to my guitar teacher about this, and he says the only problem I might face would be exactly that, control with rhythms. However, the first 2 or 2 and a half years of my playing, I couldnt solo (my first teacher never taught me) and I did have anything else to do but play rhythm. As a result, I think that my rhythmatic ability was hightened more than if I had learned to solo at that time. THis also brings up another good point. Would a righty playing a standard be at a disadvantage for legato styles? After watching Petrucci's video (where he had a segment on legato) I would have to say ABSOFUCKINGLOUTELY NO. Wouldnt the same apply to a lefty guitarists right hand speed? I have actually also noticed that a lot of times notes wont sound because my LEFT hand isnt fast enough (especially in 4321 fingered chromatics and 3 note per string 16th note patterns). I actually have tremendous rhythmatic control over my right hand, as I can play fairly intricate riffs with ease (Fates Warning's APSOG part 4 comes to mind, the riff at the begining of the instrimental section is in an odd time, so the down strokes and up strokes are reversed when the riff is played again) also almost half of the end of the Metropolis instrumental. My speed also depends on how long Im playing for. I can do 160 for a fairly good amount of time (I can do it for 20 seconds straight), but I can also play 176 for maybe a measures worth. It may also be because for a long time I neglected legato playing and focused a larger amount of my time to right hand speed. Now, Im starting to work on legato more, since it will prolly increase my left hand accuracy and make intricate or fast (or both) runs easier to do. As for the warm up problem, adding an extra 5 minutes of string skipping chromatics to a metronome to my 15 minutes of warm up seemed to help the problem, and this was after I didnt practice for a day and a half.

True, you can't necessarily tell a time sig by listening to it. You can say "It's simple quadruple" or "compound triple" or whatever, but naming the time sig is a matter of guessing unless you see the score. Still, it's the kind of thing wherein one can guess with a psychic's accuracy in pop and rock and metal etc. Most tunes aren't written in weird time sigs that sound like other time sigs these days. More in the centuries that fall under the blanket of "classical" style music (I know classical is one period, but most people consider anything orchestral etc as classical) including "20th century" music. When you hear DT do something in a quick quintuple, you can generally count on it being 5/8 or 5/4 in some circumstances. Hearing note values is also a guess in many instances. Naming what JP is doing on AOI is guesswork. However, knowing what 32nd notes at 200 BPM sounds like is not. No matter what time sig you think it's in, or what tempo you think the song is in, 32nd notes at 200 BPM (short for "quarter notes = 200 BPM" except in some rare cases, in which we are told to count other note values at said BPM) is an absolute. It's ike the number 5. We assign one value to that number (in the context of simple mathematics... I don't want any super math freaks on the list to flame me for not knowing some arcane theory of some guy with a name no one can say aloud) because that's what it has come to logically mean to us. Knowing what 32nds at 200 sounds like can tell anyone right off the bat that JP is not doing this. My other example of him capping off around 16ths at 208 on his video would stand as further evidence. But to cut this all short, it is true that when we hear a new song and say "That's 9/8" all we know is that it's some sort of 9 or it's possibly some sort of compound 3. The note value (eighth note) is just an educated guess, until we see the score or ask the artist.

I was just curious as to which kit Mike Portnoy played at the holiday shows this year. Was It the Mammoth "Purple fade to White" kit or the smaller kit found in the Five Years In a Livetime video for the fanclub show? Also which kit do think is the best of the kits Mike Portnoy has played? I really think the best he has had so far is the Purple/White one. Although I think it would be cool to see some other versions of this kit. (i.e. the Red fade to white[Japan kit] and the Green fade to white[Europe kit]) Maybe a navy blue to white or a black to grey. What do you guys think??

I think Cage's 4.33 falls into the same category as Beethoven's incredible Tenth Symphony (especially the fifth movement), the beautiful sounds of Dvorak's "Canadian" String Quartet (or was it Quintet?), and Tchaikovsky's famous ballet "Goose Lake".
