Damn. I'd never actually listened to the guy myself, but if he and Petrucci
share styles, it makes me more anxious for Asia to get their next album
done. Yup, Ian is recording the guitars with them. I didn't know who he
was until now. That last album (Arena) just wasn't as good without a classy
shredder like Pitrelli on board or a moody badass like Steve Howe.

Anyway, there's some more Ian Crichton content for ya. :)

To all you people who're acting like it's Metallica's fault that the press hasn't given due credit to bands like Savatage and Symphony X, fuck you.

As for Andre Matos, I've always considered him a good enough singer. He has occasional female tendencies and his voice lacks the earthshattering power of, say, Russel Allen, but he does what he does well and he's not a singer that renders a potentially great band unlistenable like, say, Phil Anselmo (at least as of late).

Hey all, Just a quick question/need advice post: Ive got a chance to get a Korg DW8000 for $260.00 in good shape. Do any of you guys have one? Is it worth the price? Are the sounds it makes really unique, or should I put the money to a Korg N1 rack Ive been thinking about? Of course, Im really interested because it was the synth Kevin Moore used on WDADU, but if it is a genuinely cool keyboard and would be a worthwhile addition to my ever-growing collection on paraphenalia, then that would be my reason for buying it. Could anyone who has used or has one please email me a quick review? Thanks! -Chris

You buy drumsets as exactly that, sets. In other words, you're getting a bulk rate on the kit. Manufacturers don't consider the drumset to be a single instrument. Each piece, to them, is a separate entity and you're getting a deal by buying a bunch of them at once. Look at the price of really nice snares. I've seen some Noble and Cooley brass snares for $300 and up. By four of these and you're looking at $1200. The same applies to octobans, or any other piece of drum hardware (with the possible exception of small stuff like cowbells or wind chimes). Further, since hardly anyone uses octobans, they tend to be a bit pricier. And further still, since it's a piece of percussion, the price is inflated anyway. Your best bet is to find someone who already has them, and just sample his (or her) shit. -Rahul Ananda

Christian submissively muttered: <<<<I can't see how somebody can listen once to a couple songs from a band that has multi-layered, complex arrangements and say they "lack emotion". I was already familiar with Andre Matos's style of music from his Viper days, but every time Angra puts an album out I can't "get it" until I listen to the CD at least 3 times. If there is no emotion to "Make Believe", "Lisbon" and "Holy Land" I want to be a monkey in a clown suite. I think you are making the same mistake as people that listen to Metropolis once and say DT is all about technique and no emotion. I am not saying everyone is going to like Angra, just that their music, like Dream Theater, is not about "instanct gratification". Ok, I'll shut up now.>>>>

I don't mean that every song they have lacks emotion. I'll be the first one to say that I'll give any band a chance. I did, and maybe I picked the wrong songs (and that doesn't mean I'll never like Angra - I probably will after I give them a better chance). I don't like Andre's voice much, and that probably won't change, but then again, I like Jane's Addiction. A band can only show emotion through their music if the listener is open to it (and in the mood for it) when he/she listens to it, and I wasn't in the mood. I picked up Fireworks from a local record store (Rockaway had it, for those of us in the Mesa/Tempe/Phoenix area) yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it much (I just got Nightwish's 'Oceanborn', which has been occupying most of my time lately). So cut me some fucking slack and let it sink in.... :)

I actually got this yesterday on the basis of Portnoy's recommendation, and read the thing within a matter of hours. It's not a bass book. It's basically stories from all facets of tony's career (damn, no lte stories!) and makes for *very* insightfull reading, espically those of you who either do not know what it's like to tour or to be handcuffed by a reacord label. VERY MUCH RECOMMENDED.

I remember too, that at first I listened to "Angels Cry" and I couldn't stand such high-pitched voice. I even skipped "Wuthering Heights". I gave it a couple of listenings and I forgot about it. After a while, some songs started to come back to me. I listened to it again and I was hooked. But I also remember that I got into DT in a similar way, I bought "Awake" out of curiosity, didn't impress me much at first, some time passed, gave it another chance and DT got a new fan.

That's true. But it's also true that it's more difficult to listen to complex music through a cheap boombox. Distortion at high frequencies and lack of response at the lower frequencies can actually change and even ruin the music. Low volume also dampens the highs and the lows. So I like to hear my music loud and with good equipment. Of course you're not going to notice much difference if you listen to simple pop songs.

    > Yes, numerous times. Did you miss the recent complaints, right here, > about James' performance on OIAL, specifically on "Voices"?

Yes, James is less impressive there and in his live recordings, generally speaking (there are exceptions but less, lately). But I was talking about James in "Awake". And "Voices" (studio version) is his best singing performance ever. Period. "Metropolis I" is a close second. I think James is wasting himself singing things like "You Not Me". I read in the latest fanzine that he is now into Elton John-type ballads. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but if he doesn't practice the heavier stuff, it's going to show in his live performances.

I didn't wrote that Angra sounded like Petrucci. I wrote (or I meant) that the solos in "Paradise" and "Speed" had Petrucci influences. I don't know enough music theory, but I'm sure that any guitarist with formal training can support that. By the way, "Extreme Dream" is also one of my favourites.

I just picked up a boot Vid of a Irving Plaza, NYC date on the FII tour dated 11/22/97 -- two months after the release. Plus, this is the most enthusiastic response I've seen in any crowd to a group. Everybody's singing the lyrics, etc. etc...... Any questions I've had about DT in concert are put to rest with this video. They ROCK HARD!! But you already knew that......

    2 questions:

    1) Which of you New Yorkers managed to get this feast on video tape? It was taped from what looks like a balcony. The sound isn't that good but it is a VERY GOOD tape. 2) Anybody else have this??

Responses would be helpful, either private or the jam..... Take it easy! "POJ" =o)

To further coment on Matos' vocals.. well like many at first i didnt like them.. but with time ive come to appreciate his vocals... but i truly think that in order to really grasp the power and emotion of his vocals.. you need to listen to the live versions of the songs... his performance on Holy Live is incredible...and im pretty sure its really live and not overdubbed..
