Just for the record, I happen to like Will Smith. He is probably one of the
few rappers I really like. I think he is a very intelligent human being,
and he is funny as hell. If you don't believe me, watch the Fresh Prince of
    Belleir, or Men in Black.

Well, finally someone is repeating what I said when people were voting on one of those polls (I don't remember if it was the "Song of the Millennium" or "Metal Edge's Reader's Poll" or whatever).

Nice to see that I'm not alone.

Hey, could someone please upload some MP3 to some homepage, please? I've tried to find this album on every on-line store that I know of (cdnow, cdconnection, musicblvd, cdworld and cduniverse, among others) but couldn't find it and I'm not exactly with much cash right now. :-(

Any MP3 samples would be welcome.

This is my girst post to this list, but I have to agree with this. Led Zeppelin are the second or third most popular band EVER. They've never released an album that hasn't gone at least double platinum. But they only had ONE "hit single" ("Whole Lotta Love") and they were mainly an underground success. Back in the 70's, it was possible to be the biggest selling band in the world (and they were) and still have a huge amount of the mass public never even know who you are. It's screwy but it's true. That's one thing I like about Dream Theater- they're certainly successful, but you really couldn't categorize them in with Hanson and other pop acts. And most pop music does suck. I'm not trying to offend you, that's just my opinion.

hey dale...trust me..growing your nails out to use as picks was a wacky idea ( did your nails snap off or crack badly ? )...but ive tried that. ( its killer pain if you try to use your nails as a pick. its easier to use the thin plastic picks....but if you want sorta of a thick, but choppy sound...try a slightly thicker pick ) about the thickness of a thumbnail when viewed when most of the flesh is visible, except for the nail arch . but anyways, if you like picking on a bass instead of collecting your own calluses, go right ahead, pick away! :) ive tried playing with a pick ( and gotten yelled at for attemting to break the strings ( WHICH I BOUGHT ! the friggen bastards! ) but hey...i got into Puppies on Acid a little too seriously....L:)

I think this is a bull shit statement. No one HAS to appriciate every style of music, and if you dont, its not a problem, its a matter of taste. I personally only have problems with 3 whole styles or music - rap/hiphop, country, and reggae/ska. I dont think that to be a problem, because all of the artists that Ive heard in these particular styles dont interest me, so until I hear an artist in any of these styles that I like, I will stop dismissing the whole genre. Also, there is a big difference in appriciate styles of music and appriciating the MUSICIANS that play that music, and their ability. If the person has obvious musical talent and/or techincal profficiency, then I think it would be wrong not to appriciate that talent. You dont have to like their playing, but to say a good musician sucks because you dont like the kind of music he or she plays, I think that is wrong. I used to have this problem with death metal bands, though now, even though I dont like death metal, I do appriciate the technical ability that some of the musicians have.

On a different note, has anyone noticed that what R&B is known as today is NOTHING like the type of music that it used to be? Last I checked R&B stood for rhythm and BLUES. I remember that the Blues Brothers called themself an R&B band. These new "r&b" artists arent very remenicent of "Mustang Sally" or "Soul Man." I know music evolves, but the way R&B sounds now doesnt even fit the name of the genre anymore.

Who cares? We still call prog prog, even though all prog bands are still just rewriting old Yes, Genesis, Rush, and Pink Floyd tunes. When's the last time a prog band was actually progressive??

I believe he still goes by Vanilla Ice.

Listen to this: our local classic rock station (Q106.5 FM, Davenport Iowa) tried a "mystery guest" segment: they get a guest on the phone, you ask questions and try to figure out who it is. Well, their first attempt at the mystery guest failed: he was stuck at a court appearance defending right to own a pet lynx. (Great... this didn't sound very promising... <g>) The next day, they got him on the phone. After about three callers, they pinned it down to Vanila Ice! I was outraged! I mean, there are so many entertainers they could have gotten, and they got VANILLA ICE?!!?!??

Anyway, the interview sucked, but the Dwyer & Michaels morning show still rocks. They are the funniest DJs on the planet -- a GREAT show.

I don't think Myung ever uses a pick, from what I've seen on his instructional video he just picks so hard with his fingers that the strings actually clip the pickups (check out the very first thing he plays on the tape). Another thing I've seen on the Nathan East instructional video tape is a way of getting a pick sound without using a pick is using your fingernails (flamenco/classical style?) and picking closer to the bridge.

Regarding active vs passive basses, personally I prefer passive basses, either all passive or passive pickups and an active preamp. I just find active basses to sterile sounding. Although a lot of bass and pickup manufacturers concentrate on getting a cleaner and higher output bass, in my opinion a technically cleaner and high output bass does not necessarily correspond to a better sound.

The real point of my writing is taping-related, actually . My old deck, a Sony, went off to Silicon Heaven (bless its soul). I'm in the market for a new (analog) tapedeck, and am looking for suggestions. I'm thinking mid-priced, no more than a few hundred -- not a cheapie, not too expensive, and definitely not another Sony ("guaranteed to break just after the warranty runs out"). Any help'd be appreciated.

No, compression is changing the way to represent information, with the resulting representation being "smaller". Compression can be both reversible and irreversible. I believe RA is an irreversible compression, making it impossible to have the original information brought back (I guess the tool you tak about only converts to wav, not decompress).

With images, for instance, you can compress images about 4 times without loosing any information at all using a smart compression algorithm (well, it depends also on the type of image).
