No truer words were ever spoken, Spine - man. Look, as an artist myself, I
*know* that most of the money goes to the record company, or the
distributor, or the retailer.
But some of it goes to the artist.
Not much - a tiny portion, usually - but some. So that the artist can
continue to produce the music that you want to listen to. Yet here is
someone that wants to listen to an officially released, royalty-producing
song for X amount of time before actually procuring said album - which, if
you want it cheap, should be done from Laser's Edge or Sentinel Steel (Ken's
stock is more stable, but NOBODY beats Denis's prices) - or anybody else
that sells it at a lower price - but it should be done, if said person wants
to listen to said song.
My point? Well, I have a love/hate relationship with MP3's, and with record
companies. Both have the potential to do good things, and one has already
gone horribly awry. I'm waiting for the other to do so...

Okay, I'm a newbie and I'm not wanting to annoy anyone with dumb

figure it out and have come up with nothing. Any help would be

ROTFLMAO Oh how bout they spend some time with their family ? That's one good reason isn't it ? You think DT had done quite enough already yet some still are not satisfied.... You'd think that with all the recent happening they might like a break from it all ? I am sure Mike could use a break, he's been busy with LTE II, editing the video, putting together the xmas cd and the list goes on.. Didn't JP's wife recently give birth to a baby girl ? Perhaps he might like to spend time with his wife and daughter ?

this is a phenomenon that has always intrigued me. that is, the ability to read a person's mind and understand their motivation behind buying a CD. why is it when someone buys a CD that gets alot of airplay they're instantly written off as not being able to think for themselves?

In reference to the following post: The high pitched toms Mike was using on the Mapex kit and in the studio for AWAKE are Octaban "like" drums. They were maple shelled,6" long tubular drums. In a Modern Drummer Q and A about three years ago, Mike explained this. If you watch the Progressive Drum Concepts video, Mike is seen clearly using these 6" in drums and a couple of the regular toms to play the intro fill. If you talk to Mike, I'm sure he will concur with me. Again those drums were custom made for him by Mapex.

Hey guys what I know is that Octoban is the trademark of TAMA. They produce long tubed toms with a radius of 6 inches and they call them Octobans. If you have loooked at Mike's Mapex set (From the Awake era) you should have realized that there's no drum looking like an Octoban. My ideas are: Mike kicks off 6:00 with the high toms or with rototoms. If he does it with rototoms, the first four are rototoms, and the last two are high toms. One more thing: It's not important if Mike uses octobans in 5YIALT to kick off 6:00. What I wonder is what he used in the recording of Awake.

Okay. I guess I was wrong... You obviously think that whole thing about buying the CD is bullshit and that I don't care that I'm not paying for the music just yet. And I suppose that I can't change your minds about that. However, Mike Blevins mentioned some retailers which might have lower prices than the $20 or so that CDNow offers? What retailers (online, I'd assume) are they, and where can I find them? I really do want to purchase the CDs of SX, and it's only a matter of time before I do. But I still don't think there's anything wrong with owning a copy of a song. No more than recording a song off of the radio, at least, which in any case IS illegal, but does that really make it wrong? Copying software is illegal, and many people still do that. So is speeding, and drinking underage (which I know MOST people do anyway, I included). I suppose the question isn't really do I want to hear the music, though, is it? It's more of a question of am I willing to front the money to hear the music. The bottom line: yes. But what's wrong with having an advance on my music?
I don't know, maybe my morals are just fucked up. But I just don't see a problem with it. Maybe when I release my first CD I'll feel differently, but I doubt it. If I have fans, I could really give a shit whether my music sells or is distributed freely... Of course, I couldn't know what it's like to receive royalty payments on my music until I DO sell it, so... I can't say what I will or won't do.

Hey, you're in luck! There's new cd stores opening right here in the US that sell nothing but pirate discs! Only $12.99 for your favorite, hard to get imports. ;op
Seriously, I was shocked to actually go into a music store that really was ALL pirate discs! I think our friend the CyberDuke had mentioned that this occurs in Macedonia (or whatever you want to call it), but I was surprised to see it in the US. They didn't have any Symphony X, but they had some hard to find Stratovarius. (Just let me know if you want their address Jens...)

Actually, I think that MP3's are great for marketing a band, and exposing their music to more people. If you like them, you'll most likely go out and buy the official disc.
