For the record- I do appreciate all the work DT and LTE have done the
past year. Let's see in a little more than a year we've had one studio
DT album, one live video, one 2CD live album, two fanclub CDs, a monster
DT tour and one LTE album with another on its way, plus DT heading into
the studio next month. I'm more than satisfied with those in addition to
seeing five DT concerts and one MP and JP clinic in that span, too. I
wish I could see LTE live, but I'll be more than able to survive with
what I previously mentioned. Thanks DT for the great year. :)

Sometimes I wonder why everyone names the same favorite bassists, and they
all tend to be people who aren't at the pinnacle of any sort of function
    in the bass community.

What has Dave Ellefson done that has been noteworthy? I know I taught a
friend to play megadeth basslines in very little time... and he doesn't
really solo... I doubt Mustaine even lets him write his own lines.

People should look into some more cats... my collection focuses largely
around guitar players, but I have been forced to seek out and drool over
players like Gary Willis, Bill Dickens, Wooten, O'teil (from ARU),
Manring, Bailey, Patitucci, Jaco, that freak from McLaughlin's "Que
Alegria", Malone, Onder, McBride, Mark Egan, and countless others.

Geddy Lee is awesome, but his contribution is to the music world, IMO, not
neccessarily to the bass world. Stu Hamm hasn't advanced in about 10
years... if anything he's regressed. Billy Sheehan hasn't done anything
new either (but he's still a monster).

Look some of these guys up... expand your influences. It can only help
you out. I don't regret having spent most of my money on CDs. I wouldn't
consider selling more than a small handful (single digits) back. I'm
sure, since I rarely go out seeking new monster bassists, that I've not
even scratched the surface. I know as a simple matter of fact that the
people who always list Vai, Satch, and Petrucci as their idols haven't
scratched the surface (though those names belong in any well rounded Rock
Guitar Hero list!) of what's out there. If anyone with a small cd
collection is looking to expand and catch some wild guitar players, drop
me a line, and I can make a couple hundred recommendations for you, in
practically any genre (that includes rap, country, and techno). If anyone
can make any bass recommendations (that are beyond the obvious... don't
point me at someone like Steve Harris, who I've already heard a million
times (yeah, I AM a little bit of a Maiden fan... :) drop me an e-mail.

And if any jazz guys want to recommend a good rendition of the old Victor
Young standard "Beautiful Love" I would be thankful... we're working on
Melodic Minor now, and that tune is apparently all diatonic within melodic
    minor.

Winger! Is that something you put in the player as a reminder of why you purchased the other five? What's the Kipster doing these days?

This may already have been posted, but important enough to risk duplication. Liquid Tension Experiment (Tony Levin, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess) are doing several live dates. These may be the only dates the band will ever do. If you are fortunate enough to be near one of the cities they are playing, by all means, make the show. The tour dates are up at Music Street Journal www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/9250/ <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/9250/">Music Street Journal</A> . Also, if you haven`t already done so, check out the review of the album in the progressive rock archives on the site.

    Thanks

    Yowza yowza, fartknockers!

It's interesting how people percieve what they first became familiar with (in a band or genre) as THE true and only representation. It's a natural thing, of course, but I find that I most often want to find out more about a specific band's or genre's roots, it's development and it's hi's and lo's before jumping to conclusions. With Yes I first heard Owner... thought it was a so-so pop song. But Close To The Edge, Fragile and Relayer later made the biggest impression on me, to me those are that band's tour-de-force. The 80's and 90's material is to me unbearable and the Keys to Ascension live stuff sounds awfully naff to my ears. Well executed, but unimaginative sounds and arrangements. Well, that's what most prog rock has come to be post-70's ;-)

Fave bassists: Apart from Mr Myung those would be Geddy, Jonesy, Billy, Stanley, Wetton, Geezer, Jaco, Lemmy, Macca, Cliff, Enthwistle, Bruce and Mike Dean from Corrosion of Conformity. Bass, as well as any other means of expression, should IMO not only be performed with skill, but with BALLS, or what sounds like balls (or cunt, if you prefer, or passion or whatever) (but does it really matter? does it matter whether Marilyn Manson is "for real" or if he's just doing his thing tounge-in-cheek? As he said it himself "everyone's gotta admit that whatever I do I do it really well".) Well, least favourite players IMHonestO: Patitucci, Hamm...

And the rap issue, if you care to look around there's a lot of cutting edge stuff out there, and I would think that people with open minds could get into Wu Tang, Redman etc, regardless of the style. Of course you'll have to get beyond the style, and the musical and lyrical language. To some, a squealing lead guitar is something that doesn't belong in music, to others... all music is in some way most valid in it's own time and in that time's cultural climate, and does not stand the test of time: Only the true geniuses can tap in to the lasting qualities and create timeless masterpieces. Think of this: Duran Duran did sound HOT in 84, in 90 they hadn't aged well and now... forget it. MC Hammer in 98 compared to 99, The Undertones in the 70's... but The Beatles, well of course, doesn't really sound that much more dated now than they did in 80 when at six years of age I probably first got conscious about music, or in 90 when I became a frantic record buyer. Or is it the fact that hip hop music and culture is a counter-culture to average white americans? Is that why you dismiss it, because you feel threatened by it?

hi all, first, I think you're all wrong. It's neither octobans, nor rototoms, nor high toms. It is a set up of a medium sized childrens bicycle helmet, a large yellow construction work helmut stuffed with old Alice Cooper undies, a Slazenger tennis ball container(containing only 4 of the factory desired 6 balls), a size xs hockey helmet with Bill Clintons head under it and last but not least the boot size 10 that was used in which other recording?? Korg? Anybody?

second, since everybody talks about the intro now, someone might be able to answer my previous question regarding the grouping of the attacks. I suggested(not being a drummer) it is 2-3-3-3-3, but would be delighted to leran the truth.(babadadadabababadadadabababa bumbumtschak)

third. I'll be at LTE in NY on thirsty(??), but I won't bring my fancy hat, so maybe we'll just remember faces. I figure I won't wear any DT gear. Plain black or Red Wings most likely.

forth, I thought one of the rules was to keep the quotes from posts one is answering as short as possible. I noticed that Trent is a newbee(sp?), so I guess he's excused, but often I don't see a reason that people reprint whole posts if they aren't even answering to them.

    That's all,
