dear gaz, i would like to point out that Manson is a GUY! his real name is
brian hugh warner! and yeah, he does look like a girl who's always stoned..but
then again..so do Hanson ( no offense to people who actually like the human

why it sucks to have a gibson guitar. ( im fender all the way ! ).

Rare UK sighting of the DT family, there's even a picture of one of
         the pride leaders.

Well ok, there's a small ditty about OiaLT in this months Rhythm and a
picture of MP sat in front of his kit, cul considering most of the
UK's drumming journalist are scared of talent these days.

         Female Muso's

When I turn on Jools Holland, TFI Friday, (insert any other half
decent live UK music show here, I dare ya) and see a band made up of
male and female musicians then there will be a start to the equality
         thing.

There are female singer / guitarists but there always have been, the
record company's know that stuff sells so they market it, things will
be equal when the session player in the backing bands have female
musicians in them or I go to a clinic and see 'em there.

Why is this not a problem with classical music (or is it and I'm just
not watching much of it) cause when I watch a classical concert there
seam's to be no problem finding female violin, chelo, piano etc
         players.

I think drummer's should unite to encourage more female musicians
cause I'm fed up having to stare at the back of guitarists with greasy
hair, I demand a nice arse to look at ;)

here's a few, probably repeated by the time I'm done here...

            - Sarah McLachlan (sp) plays piano and guitar, I believe
            - Jewel plays guitar
            - Shawn Colvin
            - Tori Amos
            - The Dixie Chicks (some country crap I believe)
            - Ani DiFranco (she rocks)
            - The other one with the hairy armpits...don't remember the name
she sings the "where have all the cowboys gone" song, and that
annoying song from Dawson's Creek..Paula something
            - Bonnie Raitt, don't particularly care for her, but she's damn
            good on guitar
            - Jennifer Batten (never heard her, but she's come up here a lot)
            - Drain STH - yowza.......
            - Vixen :)
            - The Genitorturers
            - Tracy Chapman
            - Indigo Girls
            - Sheryl Crow
            - Luscious Jackson
            - Me'Shell Ndegeocello (sp?)

There are tons of others, too. What does it come down to? Who
the hell knows....but part of it is radio play and the types of
artists that are "popular" for the major music market, which is
probably the 15-30-year olds....Lilith Fair brought about a huge
resurgence, but to say that all male performers, especially on
the SOLO front, not BANDS, that play instruments as well, are
totally dominant really isn't that accurate. Not a flame, just
            an opinion.

I'll leave the flames to Ptacek...... :)

Madonna is in a league of her own when it comes to music. She's
one of few artists that can either revolutionize as well as not
get stuck in one musical mode......I totally respect her as an
            artist and a performer.

Since my last post wondering if the Philly show was cancelled after
Ticketmaster said it was, I called the TLA and got a recording because they
were closed. Anyway, it mentioned that the upcoming events included LTE, so
I'm presuming that since no one else has mentioned that they've had any
problems, that my ticketmaster outlet was just screwed up that day and that
the show will go on :)

I don't know about the MTV Unplugged show cuz I never saw it, but the version
he did on the Video Music Awards that one year (1992 maybe?) with the full

version of MSKYO was electrifying. Good stuff from a rapper with true talent.
Hey, does he have any kind of Greatest Hits CD out? I still don't have ANY

Okay, I have to weigh in on this one. I think some of my favorites have

been left out of this discussion.

Ani DiFranco sounds HUGE on her Alvarez. She plays her guitar
aggressively. I mean the woman uses glue-on nails that she further
reinforces with duct tape. Well, that was about 5 years ago, but I
    imagine
she still does it. She hits pretty hard, and I think she uses some
    pretty
heavy strings too. She can do the pretty acoustic thing too, but her
aggressive acoustic style is the stuff that I like the best. It's not
    just hard either.
There's a great deal of fingerstyle ass kicking. I can't even conceive
of playing a acoustic that well. Me'Shell N'degeO'cello kicks some
    major
booty on bass. I dig both artist's songwriting and playing abilities.
    I want
    ALL their stuff.

    Someone said:

    >>Speaking as a male guitarist, I would be knocked on my ASS to see a female
rock guitarist who could play on the level of a John Petrucci.

Well, you guys should check Shrapnel's Phantom Blue, their guitar players
Nichole Couch and Michelle Meldrum, were quite good - true shredders, it's
a shame it was only released on vinyl.

And there was this girl called Jane (or Janeth) Leigh, she's a left handed
guitar player, and I saw her demo reviewed in an Spotlight column in a
guitar magazine ( I think it was Guitar for the Praticing Musician), in her
bio, she said, that she graduated from G.I.T. , and she jammed with Gambale,
Gilbert, Macalpine..., on the review they said she's was an extremely
    talentend and an amazing player...

And don't forget Meredith Brooks (from the hit single Bitch), she plays
e.guitar and I read an interview were she said, that on her latest cd, she
recorded the guitar on every track (she wrote all the songs too)

Ah ...and there's Juliana Hatfield, who plays mostly Gibson Guitars and had
some real good articles on guitar magazines over the last 3 years...

and just for record, the wifes of our friends, Marlene Portnoy and Rena
Petrucci, played in bands a few years ago (before they got married), I read
(Steve Morse column on Guitar ) that Rena is an amazing classic guitar
player, well this is really something, specially because it came from the
mouth of Mr. Steve Morse ( what a lucky man JP is !!)

    there are tonz!

    - Sarah McLaclen - plays piano, acoustic guitar, writes almost all of her
    songs

    - Loreena McKennitt - plays almost every instrument in the world, maybe not
expertly but thats one of her pet peaves. She at least learns how to play
every instrument she comes across. She also plays: piano, accordian, harp, and
a few other instruments very well AND she writes all of her songs. (In case
you have'nt noticed, this girl is one of my musical heros |-)

    - Sheryl Crow - plays a great electric and acoustic guitar and writes most of
her own songs as far as I know.

This is quite the topic, figured I'd throw a few in:

Jaye Foucher is female guitarist from Mass. she has chops rivaling Jennifer
Batten. She'll be on tour this year with Jon Finn, Andy Timmons, and Darren
    Hurst.

Phantom Blue? Never heard em but they must have been pretty good to be on
    Shrapnel.

Lita Ford? She played her axe quite well as I recall.

I seem to recall hearing that Meredith Brooks played ALL of the instruments on
    her album.

Rock Bitch? Drain STH? Prolly bad examples but interesting nonetheless.

cant forget good 'ol Vixen hehehe

Ever seen the Girl who performs with Billy Joel?? She plays Guitar, Saxophone,
Aux. Percussion, and sings. One of the best performers I've seen live.

The woman that plays Violin for Yanni totally ROCKS. As does the pair that
plays for The Lord of the Dance guy...Flatley.

    Useless Ramblings....

    January 18th, 1999
    For immediate release:

    Dream Theater changes keyboard player

It is with much personal sadness that Dream Theater announce their decision to
part ways with keyboardist Derek Sherinian.

Drummer Mike Portnoy: "Derek's contributions to the band both musically and
personally over the last 4 years is something that we will always treasure and
    we will all miss.
He will always be a part of the Dream Theater family."

"With the recent release of our live CD & video, it seemed the right time to
close this chapter and begin a new one..."

His replacement will be Jordan Rudess, who was once a touring member of the
Dregs and has recently collaborated with Mike Portnoy & John Petrucci in their
    Liquid Tension Experiment project.

"After our experiences of working with Jordan in LTE, we came to the decision
that his playing, writing and personality was more representative of where we
would like to take Dream Theater into the 21st century."

"We wish for nothing but the best in the world for Derek as we hope to always
remain friends with him. We're sure that he will continue to succeed in the
music business as he always has, and wish him luck with whomever he decides to
    play with next."

    Hey Jammers,

Any guitarists (like myself) who have been searching for more than the last
few lessons of John Petrucci's "Wild Stringdom" column online, should know
that GuitarWorld Online has updated its "Lessons" section (among other
things), and it now contains something like 15 of his lessons. I
personally was VERY happy to see this, especially the Chopin stuff. :) Enjoy.

wow.......can't see all the headers, so don't know if this is
true. If it isn't, it's a helluva fake.....

If it is, it's a big surprise. Derek will definitely be missed.
I thought he did a bang-up job musically. The biggest thing that
will be missed is the flair and stage presence that he brought
to DT. Before this tour, DT was, IMHO, lacking in the stage
presence department, very still, not a lot of movement, almost
personality-less (besides Mike of course). Derek seemed to liven
the band up, and bring more pizazz and fun to the whole DT
concert experience. That'll definitely be missed.

However, Jordan Rudess.............wow! definitely not losing
anything with respect to talent, that's for sure.

The thread for the next couple of weeks - how this change is
going to affect the next album.....

I'm not too familiar with Jordan's work besides LTE, and I was
wondering if he's just as good with his sound and choice of
            sound with respect to songs.

And another thing, how do people see the next album as.....
something more along the lines of I&W/Awake, or FII.....or
something completely and utterly different once again......

            Should definitely be interesting, though.......

                                            -Al

Happilly, all of the songs that she's "known" for were written by
Kevin Gilbert, who gave her the break she needed (by not only having her
do keys on the "Toy Matinee" tour and let her in the infamous sessions
that led to her 1st album) and she thanked him in kind by breaking up with
him and taking all the credit for the music.

May she rot in hell for all to see.
