Wow, he's really gone... at first I thought it had to be a forged post,
_had_ to be... but it's up on Itchy's page, and that's as good as the
gospel truth for me. All that I can say is that Derek is one hell of a
    guy and keyboard player.

Over the past years I have come to appreciate his contribution to the
band, and respect his playing skills, and what he brought to the show,
especially live. You can never truly be replaced, Derek. Thanks for the
    music.

But, on an up note, I'd like to welcome Jordan to the DT family. You'll
have to excuse the bitching that's sure to occur on the 'jam over the
next few months, hell years (just when you though the Kev vs Derek thing
was under control...), but we ytsejammers have long memories. We moved
past Charlie. We forged ahead after Kev split. It'll be hard, but we'll
make it w/o Derek, and so will DT.

So good luck in whatever you do, Derek, and good luck in the new band,
Jordan. May this all turn out for the better...

Mike Portnoy: How about some clarification here... Did Derek decide to leave? Did the remaining members of the band choose to replace him with Jordan, or was he out either way and Jordan was the logical replacement?

It sounds like Dream Theater chose to replace him with Jordan whether Derek liked it or not.

Just when everybody was starting to warm up to Derek...

I don't think ANYONE on this list will be disappointed with his replacement.

This should end the KevMo vs DerSher debate.

After reading the message about Derek being out of DT and Rudess being in, I first thought "damn that fu---n impersonator again". But I went to UACM to check if it was actually true and there it was, the same newsletter. Could an impersonator have tricked Itchy as well? Don't know. If Derek is out, I really can't understand why. Everything was going really well with him, or at least that's the way I saw things. What the hell happened? I think Rudess is a great keyboardist, but I don't understand the reasons behind the change. I don't think that newsletter had the explanations I need. Well, some more confirmations of this info or additional inforrmation are welcome.

Wow. I go out of town for 2 days and I come back and my musical world is flipped upside down. Who woulda thought.

I have mixed opinions about Derek leaving. I always knew that he didn't quite fit into the personality of the band. While certainly technically proficient enough to play DT's music, I always tired of his soloing style quickly. His soloing style is totally cool, but I just never thought it fit into the band.

As far as Jordan joining the band, there is noone I can think of that would fit in better. The guy is a monster, of course, but he is a monster that we KN0W will fit into the band. Personally, I am excited as hell about this turn of events.

I will miss Derek and his kick ass opening to LiTS, but damn...A new age is upon us. Prepare to be ruined when the new DT album comes out.

    Hey,

Just been to UACM, not only is the Press Release there but there is a picture of Jorden where Derek used to be and it won't be long before you'll be able to click to his Bio. That's got to hurt. I guess that's as official as it gets. I have mixed emotions at the moment, Jorden is obviously a great keyboardist (re: LTE), but I loved what Derek brought to the band (including his keyboard skills). I look forward to the new material and the next chapter of DT The Soap.

    Later,

Dave (a UK jammer - now in Alabama).

Man, this really bums me out. While I am a fan of the Big "R", I must admit that I found Derek's playing a refreshing addition to DT. It's like someone posted a few years ago, when Kevin left, so did the "glam" presence. And then, Derek added a little kick in the keys department.

Damn, this kind of sucks...a lot. I know several people on here bitch to no end about the man, but I must admit that I am saddened by this news. Just one point to make though, Rudess's playing technique is a bit in the 80's department. While I have no problem with that, the mainstream music scene does. I thought DT wanted to focus more on a "newer" approach....oh well, they are and always will be DT and I am sure we will all support them and welcome (please, nicely) anyone new they introduce to the band.

    That's all for now,

    Jeff E.

There's also Luscious Jackson, whom I saw open for LIVE, and they actually weren't too bad. The only song I recognized though was "Naked Eye" or something like that. I believe L7 is a girl band although I've never heard 'em, so correct me if I'm wrong. Oh, there's also Veruca Salt.

The Message-ID said aol.com, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. The press release was listed on Under a Cyber Moon, and I assume Itchy without put it up without confirmation (right, Mark?).

I agree. After purchasing LTE and the Rudess/Morgenstein CD, I was convinced that Jordan was the premier progressive keyboardist today. But after Falling Into Infinity -- and *especially* Once in a LIVEtime -- I realized how much talent (writing, playing, and improvising) Derek really had. "Lines in the Sand," primarily composed by Derek, was my favorite song on FII. "Anna Lee," another Derek song, was my least favorite. What does this say about Derek? I'm not sure <g>. But he managed to put the "fun" back into prog rock, and that aspect will obviously be missed.

Derek also managed to "fit in" on songs like "Speak to Me" and "The Way it Used to Be" which did not have a prominent keyboard part. I hope Jordan's addition to the band doesn't involve sacrificing slower, softer (relatively speaking) compositions like those.

    > However, Jordan Rudess.............wow! definitely not losing > anything with respect to talent, that's for sure.

No doubt. His playing is definitely energetic and I suspect he will.

I'm sure we'd all like to know what brought this on at this time, how they convinced Jordan to consider joining this time around, and how it's going to affect the new album. I just hope that it's all discussed with tact and dignity, as opposed to the old "Derek vs. ________" debates. Fact is, Derek didn't suck. The question is whether Jordan is better at not sucking <g>.

    > I'm not too familiar with Jordan's work besides LTE, and I was > wondering if he's just as good with his sound and choice of > sound with respect to songs.

Yes. Buy the Rudess/Morgenstein Project ASAP... it's a great CD. It's a few years old, and has no guitars (only keys and percussions) so it's not exactly "prog-METAL"... but Jordan's sound is identical to his sound on LTE.

    > And another thing, how do people see the next album as..... > something more along the lines of I&W/Awake, or FII.....or > something completely and utterly different once again......

Completely different. I see it (obviously) more along the lines of LTE. (3/4 of LTE is Dream Theater, and 3/5 of Dream Theater is LTE!) But I hope they keep going with the "non-virtuoso" songs like the ones I mentioned above.

He added so much life to DT, the funnier side ... I'm going to miss him- I can just think, not too long ago, when I saw them 12/29 in NY...and Derek was doing the David Lee Roth impression...so "part of the band"....and his dancing in the video, funny stuff. I loved his musical ideas! I don't want to start argumets or speculation, but --DT "hopes" to be friends with Derek, they previously found Jordan to fit better into DT as far as writing, 'personality', and playing...--- Mutual enpartment?...let's hope.

    Hey all.

Regarding the current announcement of Derek's departure, does anyone see any uncanny parallels to the Grateful Dead and their "hot seat" for keyboardists? Granted, most of the keyboardists who left the Dead did it tragically with the use of a bodybag, and usually only once a decade. Thankfully no DT members have pursued that route yet.

Seriously though... I'm beginning to wonder about this. I initially mocked Derek before I gave him half a chance, and then realized that he was (and still is) an incredible musician. Derek brought all kinds of new ideas and themes to DT, as we heard on FII and as we've been hearing up through the most recent shows on the East Coast. I'm going to miss hearing his influence, and how he would have affected Dream Theater's compositions in the future. He had personality, and I think his presence "woke up" the band, in studio and on stage. Who else would have brought jumbo lava lamps and shag carpet on stage?

I hope DT doesn't abandon the originality and the musical maturity they have gained, to gain a more "insanely progressive metal" style, as I've seen some people mention in the past few Jams. I still like the direction that FII took, and I wonder where it could have gone. Let's hope that Jordan's presence helps the band to truly progress, rather than just playing "progressive metal" as we used to know it. Maybe more jazz influences perhaps? :)

    Viva la revolution...
