Yeah, she's cool. I have the album. It doesn't sound quite as powerful on
record as it did live, but it's still great stuff. It's not really gothic
or orchestral, though. It's her voice and violin, guitar, bass, cello,
keys, drums. It is kinda heavy...some tracks have great near-metal
guitarwork mixing with distorted electric violin. It's *really* cool.

Boy, this sure is a shock to me. This loss is really something,
especially since DT is my favorite band. I was really getting into Derek's
sound and enjoyed what he added to the band. This means no more Nicky
Lemons or Nightmare Cinema, for sure. I really will miss Derek.
On the upside, it is obvious that Rudess is one hell of a player, so it
makes it a little easier to digest. I guess DT must really want the new
album really progressive. I liked FII alot, and since it seems that DT will
be either returning to their original style/sound or going a different way.
Hopefully the new album will go through production quickly and out to us so
it will be easier to cope.
Also, since Rudess has joined, isn't LTE almost practically DT, except
Tony Levin on bass and no James? I'm assuming more LTE songs will be played
at DT concerts. I wonder if there will be a LTE 3 (will there be a
necessity for it?). It is safe to say that these side projects put things
in a different perspective for the guys. Since JP and MP were the ones who
worked with Rudess, can we assume they were the ones who mainly came to this
conclusion? Many of you are probably thinking it's none of my (or our)
business to know, but I'm really curious as to what happened, besides what
MP told us. Was Derek adding too much of a different element to what DT
wanted, or was there personal reasons, or was it that they just liked Rudess
    more?
Well, listening to OIALT is helping, but man, I'm still kinda bummed.
Hopefully, no more member changes will happen again.
Good luck to Derek, and welcome to the family, Jordan.

Since the press release is on the official DT site and on Derek's web page
it must be true. Now don't get me wrong I think Jordan is a great player but
I think the band owes us an explanation on what happened. From the outside
it looked like everything was fine between the band and Derek. First it was
Kevin, now Derek, who will be replacing Jordan in a few years when he
decides to split for another gig?

jeez, you're all talking like he's dead or something. he still exists, he
just won't play with dream theater. if ou like him you can catch him with
whatever new thing he does. i personally love all of DT's different
configurations, and they havent managed to disappoint me yet. if anything i
was lamenting DT's move away from the progressive aspect, and from what i've
heard of rudess i would assume he'll nudge them back in that direction.
    let's see, shall we? moo.

i would hope that maybe LTE will open for DT, since most of em are already stuck there for the night, they might as well :)

of course this is just speculation, but i seem to recall an interview with derek where he said something along the lines of "i don't think i'd listen to DT if i didn't play in DT." which made me think, hmm, its like they're not really his kind of band, he's just playing with em cuz he gets paid and he gets to solo :) i dunno, obviously i have no idea what they're htinking but maybe they (and he) realized that he wasn't really into it? moo.

I know that Derek is out. But the thing I want to know is why. You see, I'm one of those fine folks who base their judgements of a band by their actions and presentation as well as their musical abilities. And Dream Theater I judge more than most because I've been on this list forever and have come to know all of the nifty details about them.

But this... It blows away every perception I've garnered of the band. So I want to know why. It means alot to me to know. There's all kinds of possibilities toward the outcome, but the one that Mike's post seems to say to me is "Alright Derek, it's been fun! Here's the guy we really wanted in the first place. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out!"

You know, I didn't like Derek when he replaced Kevin. I fought on Kev's side on all the DerKev wars while trying to remain objective to Derek simply because he was in the band and that's the way it was. It was his decision. I actually worked on liking Derek. Then, after I'd accepted him finally as a great player, he completely blew my fucking opinions out of the water with OiaL and I fucking started worshipping the man. Now, this shit happens and I'm like, "Whoah! WTF?"

If this is the way it happened, it's a big slap in the face to Derek, and it's a HUGE disappointment to me and all the other people who went through the same thing. Why the fuck bring the guy to the band and then throw him away like a used tampon? First, I was pissed. Then I mellowed and thought "hey, Jordan's not so bad." And then I pondered why Derek was gone and now I'm disgusted enough to unsub and push DT off of the pier to sink somewhere in the Bermuda.

So... You won't be hearing from ol' Korgy for awhile. I'm going on a lurker vacation for a bit until this damn musical roller coaster in my head quits making me barf 12th notes in all your cheerios.

*shrugs* I'll see you all later. Keep in touch! -- <lurk>KorgX3 thinks the truth is out there... Doh!<lurk>

Seems to me that everyone who's been posting lately is saying "I liked Derek!" Man, I really wish I archived my ytsejams so I could catch the people who had before been very anti-Derek. So where are you people? How come no rejoicing at the changing of ranks? The only one I've seen has been Gaz...and his sarcastic self doesn't count! I personally believe that yes, Derek was a *unique individual* (thats a euphamism if I ever heard one!) but that Jordan will do so much more for Dream Theater. By where are those Derek bashers now?

Wow. Im still reeling in shock. I must say that as good a keyboardist Derek is, and the "humor" that he brought into DT (which I will never forget), he did (at least this is how my band's drummer put it) "stick out like a sore thumb." Just look at the two page full band pic in the begining of their FII tour book. Im no knocking Derek. I always liked his playing (maybe since I got into DT with FII), and he did add a lot to the band (the jazziness particularly), but already knowing how LTE sounds, I can say that Im verymuch looking foward to the new DT album more than ever. Jordan does seem to be the "definitive" prog keyboardist of the day, and what better band for him to play in than the "definitive" prog band of the day (which also seems to include the "definitive" prog drummer, guitarist, bassist, and singer of the day). Two things come to mind though:

    1. What is to happen to LTE now? All LTE is now is instrumental DT with a different bassist.

    2. Now there is an age gap between Jordan and the rest of the guys (Im guessing, since Jordan looks to be balding). I dont think this is gonna really effect the band. There was a 10 year gap between the guys and Dominici.

Some people expect the new DT album to sound something like LTE with vocals. This isnt entirely true. The "funk" stuff in LTE was all Tony, so I dont think its gonna sound EXACTLY like LTE, but I wouldnt be suprised if it came pretty close (not that I mind :-)

Also, some think that with the absence of Derek, there will be no more "less progressive" stuff. This is so incredibly wrong. Lets not forget who wrote all of Hollow Years. Yup, Petrucci. And State of Grace on LTE? That was Jordan and John. I can only expect the best from these guys, as usual. Hey, waitasec....whats Metropolis 2 gonna sound like now? Are they gonna use it still? Guess we can only wait and see.

How about this one: Jordan Rudess kicks my ass all over the place. What's with the complaints? As far as I am concerned, all Derek ever did for the band was copy Kevin's lines (and didn't even play them that well despite the fact). Stage prescence? I thought he just stood there and looked like a fag. No. . .Jordan is the best thing that has happened to the band in 10 years. By the way (not from a typical homophobic) isn't Derek a homo anyway? He sure acted like it (ie . . making hithtory, and you. . .). One less fag. :) Just kidding. . . Lets get this album recorded and released- dying to hear it.

About the sound of the new album and the inclusion of Jordan in Dream Theater, who here thinks the next album will sound a little bit like LTE (with lyrics, of course)?

Wasn't it Mike P himself who said that DT hadn't written most of the new music yet, and they were going to do the majority of the writing in the studio? And now we have -- Portnoy, Petrucci, and Rudess, with the immensely talented Myung on bass. Sounds almost exactly like the LTE lineup. Plus writing the music in the studio seems to go along well with that idea. Just my 2 cents.

And, as much as I like Derek, I'm infinitely happy with this news. Derek got sounds out of his Trinity that few men can, but Rudess simply blows my mind away. I can't think of anyone better to put in Theater's keys spot than him. Plus, he plays Kurzweils, just like me (only better). :) Woohoo!
