I must whole-heartedly agree with Paul on this one. I'm sad to see Derek
go, and think is contributions to DT were excellent, and very helpful
for the time being...but Listening to LTE I couldn't help but hope this
change would happen...once again we have a perfect compliment to
Petrucci's bad-ass guitar licks, and Mike's awesome stix...something
that originally got me into DT was the total tightness of the band, and
while Derek is an excellent keyboardist...Jordan brings that sense of
tightness into LTE, and I'm very glad it will be a regular thing with

I was just reading UACM and it said that for the new DT album, they won't use any FII outtakes, except for "possibly Metropolis Part II". Now then, with FII still relatively new, the LTE album and a new LTE album coming up (this is my understand, I could be wrong) along with a new DT disc, they just never seem to run out of ideas. I remember someone saying that the creative well is mostly likely drained for the time being, but it wouldn't seem like it with all the material being released. Those guys are some real heroes, let me tell ya! I can't think of any other band that's this active. Not that I'm complaining...

All right so I'm overposting here, but had to comment...the band doesn't OWE us an explanation, we're the fans and all, and they treat us better than most bands do...but their internal conflicts and what not are their business and not necessarily ours. Would I LIKE an explanation? Fuck yeah. And I was thinking, as several others probably are, what will become of LTE? It's like writing DT songs with another bass player, since they write instrumentally anyway...hell, just think of DT merged with LTE...I REALLY can't wait for the next album. I'm one of those who would really dig some of that insane progressive metal, it's what I missed on FII (it was a cool album anyway). Here's to the future of DT.

I must say I'm quite surprised at the news, but not too annoyed. I'll add my voice to those who acknowledged Derek's live presence and contributions to DT....but yeah, he did kinda stick out like a sore thumb. We may miss his stage presence and antics in the future -- I thought some of their interplay on stage was funny and made the entire band seem more "human." But, as someone observed, it's not like we're taking a cut in talent. When Rudess and Morgenstein opened for DT on those Xmas shows a few years back, they really blew me (and almost everyone else I spoke to) away!
Jordan will be a fine contribution to the DT "camp," and I wish Derek the very best of luck wherever his career and impressive talent takes him. Whatever our opinions of Derek are, I doubt more than 5% of us here would hesitate to give him a glowing 5-star review for his resume. :)

I was sitting here mourning the whole derek-is-gone issue, and I realized that, just as everyone else realizes, dream theater is ALMOST LTE, just with a vocalist. looks like everyone else beat me to this conclusion. at any rate, I would be more than disappointed if john myung was ever replaced by... hmm, hypothetically speaking, tony levin. don't get me wrong; I am not by any means whatsoever knocking levin... I am merely exploring all avenues here. IMO (and I'm sure I'm not alone here), john myung kicks ass. and I have a hard time thinking of someone who seems more dedicated to the instrument. for instance, in 5YiaL, john myung is rarely without his bass. I mean, damn, the guy's even practicing on the bus. next election, I'm voting john myung for president.

Immediately following a feverish argument, Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy murdered Derek Sherinian (keyboardist, also of Dream Theater) over the last cigarette in (Portnoy's) pack. It is alleged that Sherinian smoked the cigarette without permission, and Portnoy bludgeoned him to death with a large "lava-lamp." Details are sketchy. The press release from Dream Theater is a cover-up, as was the press release immediately following the accidental death of Kevin Moore (the original keyboardist of Dream Theater, not a smoker according to sources.) due to a violent reaction, having been exposed to Mad Cow Disease. Mike Portnoy is quoted: "We have a problem with keyboardists. I think that now all we need to do is keep letting them die. We can beat Spinal Tap's record of twelve dead drummers with keyboardists." Also there is talk of sacking bassist John Myung in favor of Billy Sheehan (of Mr. Big fame.) and adding a second drummer (Terry Bozzio, of Frank Zappa, Lonely Bears and Missing Persons). Dream Theater will also change their name to "Liquid Theater Explorers." "Perhaps this is just the change we need in order to truly break into the mainstream," says John Petrucci, guitarist. "Of course, Billy Sheehan is our second choice, as Tony (Levin, of many session credits, including Peter Gabriel, Yes, King Crimson and the Liquid Tension Experiment) is always too busy to do anything that takes longer than two weeks," quickly added vocalist James LaBrie.

the new Dream Theater album will be called "A Change Of Keyboards" and will be loosely based on some film featuring Robin Williams in which he teaches pottery classes ('Seize The Clay'). There will also be a cover version of Elton John's song "Candle In The Wind" especially rewritten as a tribute to Mother Teresa called "Sandles In The Bin".
But seriously, I think having Jordan AND Derek would have been great - like a balls and chunk version of Spock's Beard. And if the band really wanted a new keyboarder, why didn't they take Damon?

Before you say "yeah, well that plinky shit Jewel does isn't REAL guitar playing," keep in mind that you're going to have to define "MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS" first. And what is the word "public" doing in your sentence? If these women did not play in public places where people could hear them, do you think anyone would have heard of them? Even Ani DiFranco has been playing public places since the beginning of her career. A female musician that I haven't seen mentioned on here yet would be Badi Assad. She is a Brazilian guitarist. Can any of the Brazilian 'jammers back me up when I say that she is an excellent guitar player? And she's definitely easy on the eyes, which doesn't hurt.

Whether or not you peruse these mindless ramblings that some call the "jam," I feel the need to express my thoughts for all to consume. Nevermind all those that applaud your departure. Nevermind all those who don't call you "progressive" enough. Nevermind those who are unsupportive. To some of us, you are a great musician, showman, and inspiration. You brought a fresh new sound to the world of Dream Theater, and your influence is forever burned into round little digital disks, as well as our minds. I had the great pleasure of seeing you perform with DT on two occasions, the last of which was at the Birch Hill NiteClub the day after Christmas this past year. Even though it was a flawed performance, it was awe inspiring none the less. The zenith of the evening, however, was when I got the chance you meet you, shake your hand, and take a picture with you. You geniunely cared that I was appreciative of your work, and that meant a lot to me. That moment is forever ingrained in my memory, as well as a 4" by 5" photo. Do I like Jordan Rudess? You bet I do. I was lucky enough to see the Rudess-Morganstein Project perform at the 1998 Modern Drummer Festival, and I also love the LTE disk. I will be a Dream Theater fan no matter what...I have been for 4 or 5 years now. However, I'll still be a Derek Sherinian fan, too. Thanks, Derek...and best of luck in whatever the music takes you.

This is the and most accurate EOJ EVER. Someone print this out and frame it.
I think the prevailing opinion is that Derek was a great player, but that he should have stayed with backing up Alice Cooper instead of backing up DT. His musical tastes were never in line with DT from the beginning, and he seemed more interested in finding unprecedented sounds, rather than what the rest of DT was doing, writing awesome music. He had his place, but I for one am excited as hell about Jordan.
See, the thing is, LTE was written in a week with three of the members of DT, and it is equal, as far as ass-kickage goes, to FII. Give those three guys PLUS Myung a few months to record something, and we are all gonna need a new set of underwear. The new DT album is going to kill us. Absolute carnage.
I would, however, like some clarification from Mike about the terms of the seperation...I get the impression he was fired...As Korg said, in effect, Jordan was who they wanted in the first place. And I kind of agree with this.
Another question is, what does this mean for LTEII? Still going to be released? Probably. I guess they already recorded it, didn't they. Some news on that would be helpful too.
Anxiously awaiting the new album.
