to be honest, i didn't like Derek right from the beginning. i heard FII
and thought, wtf, what is wrong with the guys.
as time passed by, FII has become a true loyal friend to me and thus i
started to love the things Derek brought into Dream Theaters music.
He was the rock and roll king. he added so much colour to the group.
from his glamorous appearance to his funny statements. and to his
musical abilities: God how come people really can say that he's not one
of the best keyboarders out there! he's touring with rocks biggest guns,
he knows 'em all.
i fell in love with great key solos like in BMS or TOT, one hell of a
nice solo in nothing left to say on Platypus. a keyboard player who
mentions Eddie the king Van Halen as one of his biggest influences, he's
gotta be crazy!!!!
I will miss him in Dream Theaters music.
but we shall not lose too many tears. Jordan is a genius as well.
(though Derek looked so much better, according to my girlfriend...)
i just find it unfair to say it's good he left.
but i am happily looking forward to what we are going to hear ( not
see...) in the future.

Well, MP has said in several interviews that LTE and DT are CONCEPTUALLY
different. LTE is the creative, experimental, weird outlet, while DT is the
structured, more song-oriented band. I don't think the key change (hehehe)
will alter this too drastically.
Well, I must say it. Derek kicks ass. He had the most unique keyboard
sound I have ever heard, and I think it fit DT's music incredibly well.
BTW, has anyone noticed the similarities between Jens Johansson's sound on
SV's 'Visions' and Derek's sound on OiaLT and FII? Very weird - Jens sounds
like he's trying to fucking copy Derek (and he doesn't do it very well,
IMHO). Anyway, let's face it, Jordan Rudess is the fucking man. He is
(once again IMHFO) THE keyboardist right now, and will take DT into the
future in the best way possible. I think, though I loved Derek's playing
(and his amazing stage presence), this is a positive move for DT.
I also hope Jordan doesn't subscribe to this list (no need to make him
leave, too).... :)

I've just read the backlog of Jams since the announcement.
I believe that this is going to be a very important era for DT. Will this
see a return to the more epic visions of the more old school DT? Who knows?
But to me, DT with DS were four geniuses and a good keyboard player. With
JR, DT are now five geniuses, ALL now, owners of minds capable of visions of
epic, emotional, and virtuoso compositions. Let's see DT at a one with each
other more than ever.
On another note, I'm suprized no-one has mentioned JR's classical influence.
To me, this is what makes him one of the most powerfully moving players of
our time. His piano solo in the middle of 'Crossing Over' (Rudess
Morgenstein Project), affects me to the level of pieces such as Grieg's
Piano Concerto. Hopefully, he won't suppress this influence within DT. But
with my love of classical aside, live, his presence is more powerful than
either of DT's previous keyboard players. His emotion showing more, his
concentration more intense, his energy eminating like that of the sun.
Maybe this will even see the return of DT's more musically orientated
approach, and on stage, their more performance orientated approached
(although they were never that far from this approach anyway) reminiscent of
Live In Tokyo.
This was mentioned in an earlier post, but Derek's approach to life was
evidentely quite different to the rest of DT's. His choice to pursue
multiple partners, when the rest of DT were more focused on raising families
in more loving, stable relationships, was clear. And despite some of you
saying that this part of his life is irrelevent to his music, it quite
obviously isn't. An artist's way of life is almost unavoidably eminent in
his art.
On the subject of LTE with vocals, I don't think it will be. Quite possibly
it will emerge in some places, but remember, LTE was an impulse composed
experimental project, a *momental* work of genius. DT tend to use a more
compositional approach than that, which will be reinforced, I expect, by
their new choice of keyboard player.
DT will, as they always have done, explore the possibilities of music, of
*their* music.

I never said that I wantedthe I&W days to come back, and I certainly didn't mean to imply that I wanted KevMo back in the band. I was always in the Derek camp as opposed to the Kevin one. My point was that I embraced the direction they were going in with FII as opposed to LTE, and I hope that they continue down the FII path. That's not to say that I don't think LTE is good - it's unreal. But I'd rather see Dream Theater, the band, continue down the road that Dream Theater, the band, was already down, as opposed to taking a left at Albequerque and driving down LTE Blvd.

As much as I love I&W, it's not the 80's anymore. I love FII. Maybe not more than the other stuff, but just as much, and I'm not a "new" fan. I've been a fan since I&W first came out. I think FII added some balls and soul to DT that they never had before. anyway, I'm really sorry to see him go, I know Jordan is great, but from what I've heard from him, he sounds like a machine, a DEFINATE change from Derek.
Oh, and by the way, anyone who lives near the DC area, my band is going to be playing at "the grog" in georgetown tomorrow (wed) night. We've only been together about a month, so we don't have originals yet, so we will just be playing DT songs. the set list will probably be:

We've played this set before here, and nobody liked us, cause they were all there to see an alternative band. oh well, maybe some DT fans will want to see us.

I am happy in rejoining YTSEJAM. Derek did his contribution to the band b= ut now we have a real keyboard genius who has just joined. Jordan is the missing piece to this band. He will not be shy in taking leads and bringi= ng us closer to a prog sounding band with more complex structured musical sounds. In my opinion, the next album will have sound parts ala IAW, but much better. Imagine at their next tour, they will perform their material and parts of Liquid tension 1&2. I can't wait! Will LTE die?
I'm sure he will be a great musician in the likes of Emerson, Wakeman, Banks, Minnear, etc=85

I'm extremely sorry of this was taken in the wrong context. Maybe it was my word choice. I am quite sure that Derek Sherinian is not homosexual. There was a time where using the word gay meant more than just homosexual and frankly, that's what I was driving at.
I think Derek's slightly flamboyant stage presence was un called for. Personally, I do not like it at all. The tan-Bono bumble-bee glasses and the dumb half-ass facial hair on the chin. Frankly, I never thought it fit. The dumb gyrations on stage.... When I said it was gay, I meant that it was uncalled for in the situation that it lived in.
Read my post again, I never said Derek was gay. I said that his stage presence is gay (us word gay, dumb, or stupid interchangeably)

While a KC/LTE/DT show would rule verily, um...don't you think at least KC and DT should get equal billing? After all, haven't they been prog-rocking since most of the folks in DT were toddlers? I'll leave individual quality assessments to individuals (as they should be), but I think King Crimson is AT LEAST as good if not better than DT.

No chance in hell, man. We are in for the ride of our lives. I can see the camps gathering already. It seems as though everyone is pro-Jordan, but the sentiments of the 'jammers towards Derek are coming out. Soon, baby...
Just for the record, I'll say I'm sorry Derek's splitting. I really dug the guy, personally and professionally. As for his being gay, whoever said that (again...) can go find me the medical text that says lisps are a sure sign of homosexuality. Then reconcile that with Derek's apparently healthy appetite for women. Hell, I had wanted to talk to him for a bit after a show in Chicago, but Mike said he had slipped off with a gal. Sounds pretty gay to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
