hi there, I just turned my back to the computer for one day, turn it
back on and see 5 jams on Monday. Somebody trying to unsubscribe?
Derek gone. No LitS II. I was a little skeptic. All this octoban shit
and no clearing word from Mike, now this. Explains everything. CHristina
    - do you have any news? Could you send me Dereks e-mail address or post
it, maybe sb would like to say g-bye personally. The new album? Will
rock like the others before(includingFII), but I can't wait to get it.
Am I excited by the replacement? I don't know yet. I didn't hear the
album yet. I don't want to jump to eulogy before I hear that guy
playing. The TTTmp3 didn't convince me. LTE did though. Let's see what
    happens.
    bye derek,
    seb

Ok first of all... most of ACos' keyboard parts are WAY different on the album
version than on the demos with Kevin, and NO not any FII song was written with
kevin or without derek for that matter, also.. new millenium i remember it was one
of the last songs dt wrote for FII, and somewhere i read derek saying that the
main theme was his, anyways finally mi opinion on this whole thing well, I want to
know more about the circumstances that prompted this, althought im looking forward
to dt with jordan, but i will surely miss dereks playing a lot. Another cool
replacement IMO wouldve been Matt Guillory! (althought im not sure if hes in a
band) Another thought ive had, is that this probably has been in the works for a
while, and maybe DT decided not to go public until they could get a replacement
(or confirm Jordans place) , also ..another opinion on when someone mentioned
another thing that has nothing to do with Dereks playing.. his clothes. !
anyways.. i dont know if you noticed but most of the other dt members also changed
their looks and clothes...why? because its the late 90's Would you rather see
them still wearing tight old jeans and silk shirts with the chest all bare? Ok
granted, James should lose his leather pants :) but if you watch 5YiAL and then
LiT and you tell me youd rather see the band looking like they did in 93' i think
you have a warped sense of style. Im sure most lady jammers here will agree with
me that they look and dress 100% better than they did back then . The fact that
you are still into the tight jeans silk shirt thing doesnt make it cool...

Important : when i say you i mean everyone who thinks that way and not any single
    person!

Well when I read about the big change, I must say that I wasn't all that
broken up about it. The way I see it, they replaced one kick-ass player
with another kick-ass player. As long as we still have a kick-ass player,
right? I personally don't see it changing DT too much, and it doesn't
affect the way I feel about the band. It does kinda suck for Derek
though, cuz it's like when your girl is seeing someone else, and then one
day it's "I've met this other guy and we really get along and I don't
think you and I are gonna work out, so hit the road." Anyways, DT is
    still DT to me.

In other news, with all the System of a Down talk on here recently, I'd
like to mention that my band is going to open for them here in Michigan
sometime next month, with a date TBA.

    Ciao.

Derek is the man!, and I wish him luck on his solo album. Did everyone
catch that? Someone posted saying that it would come out May on Magna
Carta...I'm looking forward to that, as well as LaBrie's. Considering that he
co/wrote wrote Anna Lee and LiTS, 2 of my favs off FII, I think his solo stuff
will kick ass. What do you guys think?

Jordan is incredible...I can't wait to see how he affects DT. Hmmm...this
should really boost his RPM sales ;)- great album BTW. It's in my changer, and
is playing now...I suggest you guys get it if you don't have it already, and
want more of a feel of the Rudess style.

Has anyone else considered or thought about this?... Jordan's departure.
He seems to independant to stay in DT. Let's face it- He rejected them once,
and probably not be in the band longer than Derek. Just an opinion.
Personally, I think the main reason he joined DT is so that he could play out
    more.

Hm. I find the opposite to be true. The only key leads I can really think
of on "Awake" are in 6:00 and Scarred. On FII, you've got BMS, HK, two in
TOT, as well as very prominent organ/piano work in songs like LITS, Anna
Lee, NM. Awake was very key flat.

Just wanted to say, besides the great things the keys change will do for
DT, I think it's having a good effect on the jam too...while I think
some of these jammers are being a little cruel and spiteful (which can
be okay) to Derek...I mean, kicking a guy when he's down? And by the
way I wonder if Derek is cool with this...anyway the jam hasn't been
this interesting in a while, I mean I think it's great that we discuss
other bands and music theory and what not, but it's cool we're
discussing actual DT, you know? There hasn't been this much overall DTC
in AGES. I think it's a good thing, and I think it's cool that for the
most part we're being supportive, because even though I'm sure the guys
in the band are happy with their decision, it can't hurt to get positive
feedback from the fans...before you even release anything new! As for
all of us who want explanations, I expect we just need to be patient,
the whole KevMo thing eventually came out in interviews and stuff like
that, and I'm sure it will be the same with this. Later.

    Hey jammers:
i've only been subscribed since Friday...since this is my first time,
bear with me. i have $ .02 and have to throw it in.
Fact 1: DT has changed keyboardists.
Fact 2: As of right now, it doesn't matter -- outside of the 6 guys
    involved.
    By way of explanation:
So DT has replaced keyboardists; that's business. It happens all the
time, even when you least expect it(Queensryche changing it's line-up --
NEVER! Whoops; never say never!) So life goes on. They announce DS's
replacement. OK. Fine. Now's not the time to rejoice. It's not the time
to criticize. It's certainly not the time to wage flame warfare over the
subject. Big deal -- they could name Harvey the Wonder Hamster as a new
member of the band. Point is -- there will be a new album out under the
Dream Theater name. i will buy it. Then will be time to judge the
prudence of the move -- and even then, there will be as many different
opinions as there will be listeners. So wait 'til the record comes out
and then see what kind of move this is. (Whoops -- record -- i meant
album; and didn't mean to show my age!)

A question: In my pursuit of information useless to me -- and since i
haven't been to the DT website in a couple of weeks -- anybody heard
where they are going to record and who will be twisting the knobs?

    Thanks for listening

Derek never fit the prog metal mold. He came from playing with Alice
Cooper and KISS. I believe he even said that he enjoys playing and
listening to hard rock and that he isn't a prog fan. The other members
of DT and JR are prog fans and come from that background. I thought
Derek sounded fine with DT but I believe he is better off playing the
    music he enjoys.

I would like to know the whole story about Derek's demise for one reason and that is I would like to know where John Myung fits into Dream Theater now. I mean if it was MP and JP deciding that they liked the feel of playing with JR better then what does this mean about how they feel about LTE's relationship with the band.

Not for a second am I suggesting that Levin would ever replace John Myung but with all the talk on the jam about how DT is "3/5 LTE" and how great a LTE/DT tour would be I just don't know how statements and sentiments like that could be a good thing for the band.

I think Labire could handle being off stage for an LTE opener... He does it all the time for instrumentals and as far as I have heard likes the breaks... but from Myung's perspective it would be a party he was not invited to... I don't know how this would effect the band itself...

The whole story would clear this up... primarily I would like to know who's idea it was (so I can pat them on the back) but also so we can know what the band chemistry is really like now...

Usually when an announcement such as this is made aloud, it shocks everyone into silence. Damn, we're backwards. I will still support the group, and now I'll have to keep tabs on what Derek is up to as well. When will it end? Oh, the humanity! By the way, since Buffoon Vai reposted it: >Bitches tend mainly to be female. Unless, of course, it follows the word "prison." Which then relates back to poor Gaz's misunderstood comments about George O'Dowd and Marilyn.

That chick is just stupid. First, she wanted a list of female musicians. Then she wanted a list of female musicians that don't front an actual band. Then she wanted a list of female musicians who don't front an actual band who "play an instrument". Then she wanted a list of female musicians who don't front an actual band who "play an instrument" and write their stuff. Then she wanted a list of female musicians who don't front an actual band who "play an instrument", write their stuff and "play in public" or something like that. When the hell is it going to be good enough for her?!?!?

The "desention" among those who weren't Derek fans shouldn't keep quiet just because he's no longer in the group. I just think it's "taking the high road" to look at the good points he brought into the band, rather than saying "what an asshole!@?!" and dismissing him like yesterday's news. Keep in mind that I, like MojoMan, felt that Derek was a rock keyboardist in a prog band (and DT was fitted towards Derek's weak suit: taking leads, in both writing and keyboarding) and that Jordan (the same way Kevin was before he left the band) is a prog keyboardist. For all the talk about "labelling" DT, they *are* a progressive metal band. Derek was a sqaure peg in a round hole (and i don't mean that in a sexual or any other way other than 'he just didn't fit the band's nature' so piss off) whereas Jordan fits in quite nicely.

<shrug> I may not have been Pro-Derek, but he can look back on the past four and a half years (1994-1998) as very positive ones for him (both as a musician and a virtuoso) and for the band (both as writers and performers).

King Crimson would get top billing. To think otherwise is a slap in all of progressive rock history. LTE just wouldn't fit in a show like this.

    1. Kevin wrote 6:00, btw. That kidna helps. :)

    2. Kevin was much more comfy taking keyboard leads for more than 15 bars, something that Derek really didn't do (and when he did - Burning My Soul, Pervuaian Skies - he was usually buried in the mix) whereas Kevin's leads weren't felt as (at least by me) "segueways" to the next section.

everyone seems to be saying now that the next album is gonna sound like either I&W or LTE or not FII or whatever, but shouldnt we all be expecting something new?...i mean none of dt's albums sound anything like any of their others...im sure, that especially with a brand new keyboardist they are going to "progress" even further and come out with something that will totally suprise us all...i&w was great, but i certainly dont want another cd that sounds like it...theyre not gonna "regress" back to the old days, and i doubt that were gonna get LTE3 from them either...whatever it is, i cant wait...
