Ok, here's my take on the situation. Im not too terribly upset at the
revolving door that is the spot of keyboardist for DT, but I feel like I
was just getting used to Derek. Im probably somewhere on the fence in
regards to my feelings of relief/disappointment about this predicament,
but I can honestly say that I will miss him. He started out as the guy
I loved to hate; I just couldnt take him seriously in all his pimp daddy
platform shoe-ed splendor. I thought and still do think that he doesnt
fit into the band very well, but I have to admit Im gonna miss his
zaniness, his stupid antics, and the hideous David Lee Roth impression
he did at the Irving Plaza show he did last month.
I for one don't think DT owes me or any other fans an explanation.
Im glad at least that though the band has "parted ways" with Derek, he
will be followed by such a talented keyboardist (no I dont look at this
    as a replacement).
Whoever made the comment about DT making the next album sound like
I&W.. Im sorry to be rude but thats one of the stupidest things Ive seen
posted in a while. Being a musician is about changing and evolving,
getting new ideas and improving on past ones, not taking what your fans
consider to be your best album and making a duplicate. Derek added a
lot of new ideas and influences to DT. Sometimes I outright hated his
style, but it was refreshing to hear something different. Another
thing: I wish people would stop making references to the fact that Derek
was a "rock/metal" player in a "prog" band. Give these musicians some
credit and dont limit them to genres.

/me prepares to go hide in the corner with the handful of non FII-haters

    Exactly.

People who think this will be LTE 3 are stupid. LTE was written in a week, and
partially improved. It will be totally different from writing a regular album,
not to mention the added input of Myung and LaBrie.

People who think they'll go back to sounding like I&W are also stupid. In case
you hadn't noticed, Kevin has been gone for years and the rest of the band has
moved further from that style with every release.

And I even heard somone say on irc that the next album will sound like the
Rudess Morganstien Project. I'll let that idiocy stand on its own.

And one last note...why don't people chill? The band doesn't owe us jack shit. A
rational person supports a band as is, and moves on if they don't like any
changes which occur. When you buy a cd or a concert ticket, you're buying
exactly that. You're not buying partial rights to tell a band what to do in the
future. They don't owe us a progmetal album. They don't owe us a jazzy feel.
They don't owe us an explanation. They only owe it to themselves to do what the
    think is right musically.

Deal with it. Love it or hate it or ignore it, but it's not gonna change, so
your reaction is your own problem.

Well like everyone else, I was completely shocked to find out that
Derek is no longer in DT. I don't really see this as a very bad
    thing. I loved the Kev-Dt, I liked the Derek-Dt and I like LTE. I
love everything that DT has put out and I think as far as there
'sound' they really are progressing. Every album does have its
similarities, but not so much to say 'been there, done that'. I am
sad to see Derek go but I am happy with Jordan coming aboard and am
curious to see which direction they are going to take.

    later all

    Hey there....

Yes I'm still alive... I have been busy doing other things than just sitting
behind my puter all day. :P I am currently involved in a Pantera tribute
project/band. It features me on drums, Marcel Coenen (Lemur Voice) on
guitar, Nick Hameury (Form) on vox and a guy called Alex on bass... We rule!
:P For all you Dutch readers: we play a gig in Echt (L) on friday. Email me
    for details.

But what did I hear today!!!!!! Derek leaving DT!. My God what a shock. To
be honest, I dunno what I would have done if Jordan wasn't the one to
replace him. God this is news!

I quickly scrolled down some of the latest jams and sadly discovered that
some of you guys now start pissing all over Derek. I have no clue why he
left at all, but this is sad. Derek was a very cool dude and he doesn't
deserve it to be kicked in the back.
Also I wonder why this happened. I remember very well that alot of you guys
always talked about Jordan replacing Derek. So I guess some people got very
    happy :)

Could someone please explain to me why Derek exactly left? Or is it not
    clear yet?

I'm looking forward to reading the next Jam

I'm beginning to wonder if DT (at least JM, JP, MP, and KJLB) gave JR an
open door when he originally joined Dixie Dregs as opposed to DT. Did they
give him the old "the offer is still on the table" line? I wonder because
it seems, as soon as JR showed serious interest, they had him join the band.
I originally thought this because, on Jordan's webpage
(http://www.mediusvision.com/jordan), he is quoted in his "daily journal" to
say, "Today I joined Dream Theater -Jordan-". This made it sound like it
was his idea... Maybe... OK fine, maybe I am just starved due to the lack
of explanation, and have had way too much time to speculate... Shutting up
    now.... *oink* :)

    Hi,

I'm still pretty much in chock since I read Mike's announcement regarding
    Derek's departure.
Dream Theater has always amazed me with every album I've gotten, and until
I saw them live, I preferred Kevin's style of playing. Perhaps because
Awake was my favorite album (still is?). But when I finally got to see them
for the first time in Denmark 1997 I got my butt severely kicked!
Especially now with Derek gone, I bless that "special" day when I got to
see Lines In The Sand live, with Derek all over it.
Of course, I really like Rudess' playing as well (I only have LTE so far)
and I assume, and hope, Dream Theater will head in yet another direction
with the new album, and not go back to the Images & Words kind of songs,
while still being able to apply the freshness and humor Derek brought to
the music and the live appearances. Basically, I want more great SONGS,
like New Millennium, Hollow Years and Lines In The Sand.
Oh well, DT have managed to impress me every time before, so I guess this
    will be no exception.

By the way, I know this isn't very coherent or well thought out, but as I
said, I'm in some sort of chock, and I'm tired as hell :)

    /Anders

Exactly... That is also why we, the fans, will most likely accept Jordan
easier than we accepted Derek. We all know Jordan, and know his abilities
and we only have praising words on his work. When it comes to Derek, I
don't think many of knew him before he went touring with DT. I mean Alice
and Kiss aren't exactly the kind of bands average DT fans would listen to
right? That's why it's normal I think that there'll be much more cheers
and joy and all with the announcement that Jordan joins DT than when Derek
    replaced KM...

    Cheers

I disagree with you here. I think that all this replacement stuff is
really worth talking about... I think that now is a good occasion too
discuss some real DTC... After all, how often do these things happen? What
do you expect us, the DT fans to do? To sit back and say 'Okay now that we
know that, let's go on'? No way Jose... This is the time to get a real
debate (not a flame war) about DT's keys sound and how they changed over
the past years... Besides, I think most of us find this rather exciting,
thinking that the new DT album could be something entirely different from
    what we've imagined...

    I do at least...
