Here is the debate I want to see: what songs will JR play. I would hate
to see someone his caliber have to sit through You Not Me or Take Away My
Pain -- hell Burning My Soul is pushing it. Anyway, other than Anna Lee
any other takes on what he will play? Personally I cannot wait until JR
solo intro in Lines, somehow I think it will be just fine.

Wow! Derek shocker! Took forever to read the backlog of reactions in
the jam. So here's some of my reactions to recent jams:

    1. What will the new DT sound like? Well, it will be a cross between
DT and LTE. My guess is that the big difference will be that they will
take more time to compose and record than was spent on the LTE
projects. Obviously, they will focus more on vocal compositions for
the new DT recording. Hopefully Jordan will bring back a little more
of the "mood and atmosphere" that were missing on FII. And being a
neo-classical junkie, his classical background is a welcome addition,
    at least for me.

    2. Derek vs. Kevin vs. Jordan? Well, many of us moaned about the loss
of Kevin for years, so the loss of Derek will no doubt be moaned for
awhile. Maybe not as much though. ;o) The real debate will start when
the new DT comes out. Then we can compare all 3 of them.

    3. Derek eulogy. Many people enjoyed Derek's playing style and will
miss him. Although it's always a matter of personnal preference, no
one ever denied that he was a good player.

But sometimes I don't understand how bringing a lava lamp to a gig
makes a player any better or worse. It's just about the music for me.
I can care less how the players are dressed, or if they shove a 1000
watt light bulb up their ass and shoot light beams out their belly
    button!

    4. Why is Derek out? Well, I don't think that the guys in DT owe us
any further explanation. It was always obvious that he wasn't a
"perfect" fit in the band. He taste in music and interests were always
a little different. No doubt if it were up to Derek, he would rather
be touring with a straight ahead rock band that also had the benefit
of large number of nubile young groupies.

    5. Good move or bad? Let's talk record sales. There's a lot of old DT
fans out there that would not have picked up the next DT disc if Derek
was still in the band. Simple fact. With Jordan in the band, old and
new fans will be anxious to pick up the new disc. Mo' money!

But of course that wouldn't be the only reason, maybe just a good side
effect. ;o) Once again, if Jordan had been available after Awake, we
would have never heard of Derek. Jordan was the first choice.

Actually this works out great for Jordan, since Derek stood in there
and took the abuse of thousands of rabid Kevin Moore fans. Jordan will
not be under the same fire.

For those of you who want to hear what the old material
might sound like with Jordan Rudess, I urge you to download
the Take The Time MP3 that was in circulation a few months
ago at Lines in the Sand. See the URL below if you haven't

I particularly like the jam at the end of the song - it gives

    Hello all,
This is my first time posting to this list. I subscribed in June with an
old email account, and just checked it. I was suprised when I had 569
messages! What a pleasnt suprise. I am very glad that Derek is gone, he
did not fit in with the rest of the band, soundwise, personality wise, and
his whole image. My friend said when he first saw him he thought he looked
like one of the guys from Matchbox 20. I am personally looking forward
even more to the next release!

    Hi all,

As far as I'm concerned, Derek is a great musician. I however preferred
what I consider to be the smooth sound of Kevin's live keyboard playing
as opposed to Derek's almost staccato delivery. I think Jordan will be
the best of the three as far as his overall influence on the band and
live playing. Here's to the new millennium's theme music, brought to us
by a freshly new Dream Theater. Later, Kevin.

Umm-- I think LTE will already be there, considering the fact that Tony = Levin is the bassist for King Crimson, mikey. Personally, I think it would be billed as a King Crimson show, with = special guests, Dream Theater. LTE would probably evolve as a group jam = in the middle of the show, or at the end.

About everyone worried that Derek didnt like prog, or James doesnt like prog and migh be out..

I personally think a band is healthier when there are varied influences. The tug-of-war to pull the music into different directions often generates powerful, emotional and timeless classics! Not to mention is created very original tunes!

i dont see why so many people seem to think its a bad thing that derek is a fan of van halen, kiss, and marilyn manson...that happened to be one of the reasons that i thought he was so cool...its actually healthy for the band to expand their inspirations...thats why FII(IMO probably their best cd) had the biggest variety of types of songs throughout the cd, which i think is a good thing...it could be boring if every single song was just influenced by rush, metallica, and yes...the grooves and almost industrial sounds derek threw in there were more than welcomed by me...
