It seems a lot of people weren't convinced by his playing from the TTT mp3
that was floating around, but I'd like to remind you that he was brought
in on very short notice and reading from sheet music! Just think of what
he'll be capable of after being in the band for a few months! Hell, LTE
was done in a week and he ruled on that, so what makes you think that
after some serious rehearsals/songwriting sessions that he won't
completely kick all our asses again. Just me humble opinion.

Hey folks...
Made a couple of mp3s from outtakes of the Paris 6/25/98 show (OIAL show).
Both are 128k stereo clips.
1) "The Way It Used to Be" - (7.2megs - 7:41)
This wasn't, as far as I can remember, released in any form on the recent
live stuff (OIAL/5YIAL/Xmas CD). In the actual show it was sandwiched in
between Lines in the Sand and Scarred (man, what a setlist). :)
2) "Cover My Eyes" - (4.8megs - 4:59)
This version wasn't released because the performance is very rough.
Portnoy has a great (and very true) comment about it at the end of this
clip.. :) Enjoy!
Both of these mp3s, as well as several other excellent selections, are
available on Bogie's "Lines in the Sand" website. (Thanks again, Nick.)
Though registration is not required to grab these (though some of the mp3s
there do require it), I really urge anyone who's at all interested in live
taping and trading to sign up for this site. It's still being built, but
it's already a great place (really, the only place) to meet a bunch of
other Dream Theater live traders. It's also a great place for new traders
to get hooked up with their first recordings. I've only been on the site
about a month and I've already hooked up several trades with people I've
never traded with before. The hardest thing about trading is getting
started and this site really makes that problem non-existent. The only
thing we have to do is support it. So go... Go dammit!!! :)
Hope everyone enjoys the clips... Take care...

I know this is old but we've been away... and this is my first posting
ever...
Prominent Female Musicians who play their own instruments...
depends what you call prominent ... many artists come to mind,
Joni Mitchell who plays guitar, piano, dulcimer, writes, produces, does
own art work etc
Kate Bush who plays piano, writes own music, produces
Laurie Anderson
Annie Lennox plays piano, synths, bass, flute
Del Bello plays guitar (lead & rhythm)
Aretha Franklin plays piano
Toyah plays guitar
Iris Dement
Ani Difranco
Lita Ford (never said she's good but she fits the bill)
Joan Jett
Marianne Faithful
Perhaps you just choose not to see that women can play, write, compose
and produce. The voice is the first 'instrument' and being proficient
in one area has never been a crime. Shelia Chandra's primary focus is
on her considerable voice and this is her craft. Just check out female
Jazz vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald with her incredible scat singing.
Who ever said that those on the charts were talented or could even
play? Picking up a guitar and knowing three chords doesn't make you a
musician... we can all write cheesy, fluff songs with tedious lyrics and
then stick a beat over the top! :-)
Vanessa.

I'm new to this List as my husband subscribes not me... I belong to the
Joni Mitchell Discussion List but I thought I'd check this out and I
just want to know... what's looks got to do with it?
The guy looks too 'Bono' to be in Dream Theater? Obviously "prog"
means; guys wearing tight, black jeans with long hair and looking
suitably intense over their instruments?
Personal taste has lot to do with your appreciation of a band but as
someone posted to the List a while ago (and forgive me, I can't remember
who)
"Liking and respecting can be two different things! You don't have to
like some band but you can respect their work"
Bugger what he wears and what he looks like... it's what he does that
counts! As people who strenuously contest that they appreciate a
band's musicianship and not their chartability this comment (as well as
the Matchbox 20 one) are totally irrelevant.

Are they irrelevant? Hell no (even though they may be late). They are long though. I hope someone finds them worthwile.
Between my hearing of some hair-raising activities and speculation in the Queensryche camp yesterday and this shocking announcement, plus school to worry about, I've been thinking quite a bit. Consequentally, I seem to have missed most of the flood of comments.
>Al, the Progtologist wrote: >>This should end the KevMo vs DerSher debate. > >Hahahahahahaha....I remember when I too was naive like this in the halcyon >days of my youth. This won't end the debate, it's just going to make it a >three-sided one. We all know there's III Sides to Every Story anyway (right >Jeff F.?). > >waiting for the first KevMo vs. DerShe vs. JorRud debate, >Phil Well hello, Mr. C. I thought you had forgotten me. (Aren't I a fine poet/lyricist?)
While I appreciate the humor here (let's hope there never comes a time for a fourth "side"), I'm also compelled to wonder. See, Extreme was wrong (though brilliantly wrong--it's still great music). There aren't three sides to _every_ story. There could be as few as one. What does this have to do with Sherinian's departure? Quite a bit. I've been wondering: who exactly made this decision? It seems like the decision was made for Mr. Sherinian, but the information I have is too vague to come to that conclusion. Was this a mutual agreement? If he is really as indifferent to progressive rock as some people say, and if he's really more interested in being a mindless groupie slut than playing music, there's an infinite amount of gigs he can get with his ability. So, if the above is true, did he just say, "OK, I can get as much (or more) money elsewhere, have more fun, and get more women, so it doesn't make much difference?" This would make a lot of sense if some of the characterizations of him on here are true. I doubt they are (in that way), but I could be wrong. (Even I am once in awhile.) Otherwise, it seems like he was, to use the vernacular, dumped. I'm not sure what to think about this. I had gotten used to Derek Sherinian. Even though I thought he acted silly, and dressed funny, and sometimes made a fool of himself, I also realized that his writing and playing contributions (despite some of his tasteless dirty organ sounds) were excellent. He also brought an element to the stage that (I think) benefitted the band. (More on this later.) Were the powers that be justified in laying him off? Probably. He did not spend as many years steering this band, and, if he was told from the start that he could lose his spot at any time (which, for all I know, is highly possible, especially since they apparently wanted Rudess first), there's no question that were justified. It just seems rather odd that, from the outside, Sherinian seemed to become an equal member of this band, when that clearly wasn't the case. I simply think it's questionable to take on a keyboard player and, after a few years, say, "Thanks, but now that this guy finally wants to be in, you're gone." _Unless_ that was the idea all along (as someone has mentioned already). Should the band care what I think (even if I was an important fan and not Jeff Falk)? Absolutely not. They should do what they think is best for themselves, the band, which, until recently, included Derek Sherinian. All I am saying is, I hope the band was considerate to him. I don't see why they wouldn't be--they seem like decent men. I was kind of expecting Mr. Portnoy to address this issue soon, and he hasn't yet. They still have the benefit of the doubt. They certainly don't owe anybody an explanation, but that doesn't mean that one might not be a good idea. Either way, it is their decision. I have learned that it is good policy to be forthcoming, but perhaps no explanation is better than a false one. As far as Jordan Rudess is concerned, of course he is exceptional. I think he'll (and they'll) be spectacular. But things will be different. After seeing the first two of the recent shows in December, I almost sent something of a review of them here. At the time, you all were lucky that I didn't. Now you have to suffer (or continue scrolling down). My impression of the shows was this: Dream Theater was becoming a more interesting (if possible) live _rock_ band. Not necessarily progressive or not progressive, but "rock" in the best sense of the term: somewhat diverse, but always skilled, melodic, and full of craft. The artists they covered reflected that: more pop-oriented progressive rock (Pink Floyd, Rush), pop/rock (the good kind--Elton John, U2? where do they fit?), classic hard rock (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Van Halen, even The Who?) and traditional (whomever wrote "O Holy Night"). In other words, they were covering a spectrum of songs that are as diverse as they are good. Besides that, Portnoy had the small drum kit, and everything was more stripped down. There was a hell of a lot of improvisation (right down to spur-of-the-moment renditions of unexpected songs) and a different set list every night. _This_ is live rock at its finest. Call me crazy (you do anyway), but I like it. Perhaps that was a once-off occurrence; it seems like it now. The whole vibe of those shows, while still "progressive" (as much as Pink Floyd and Rush, anyway, and much of Genesis), was a little more diverse than the standard eight-plus-minute, extended solos everywhere, full-of-time-changes progressive music. I was kind of enjoying that. Now they seem to make a dramatic shift back to what they did before. That's great--_Images and Words_ is my favorite album since 1980 (with one possible exception). I'm just surprised. I have no doubt the music will be excellent. I'm only (slightly) worried about one thing: the live shows. I know Jordan Rudess will be spectacular live; we all know that. What I don't want to happen (and this only matters to me)--extremely introverted playing. I hope the balance of the cerebral _and_ energetic is maintained. And I hope they don't go on auto-pilot when they play live like some bands of this variety do. I don't know how Rudess plays live, so I don't know what to expect. Whatever happens, I'm sure I will like it and appreciate it. I just hope that the one progressive band I like who has the spontaneity (sp?), unexpectedness and musical variety of Springsteen's live shows doesn't revert to completely rigid, standard set lists for the whole tour and arrangements that don't change at all from the start of the tour to the end. We already have other great bands like Rush (and younger ones) to fill that void. A few final observations. It was said that Jordan Rudess originally didn't join the band becuase he objected to their long tour schedules. Why has he changed his mind? Because he doesn't mind touring more now? Or because the band won't tour as much? Don't get me wrong: whatever they decide is fine. I know they have families and lives outside of touring. I'm just wondering. Also: it's been said that Derek Sherinian stuck out like a sore thumb. I won't argue with that (although I think that can be good--too many quiet guys like me and John Myung should be offset by a Derek Sherinian). However, someone else in the band seemed to have as much in common with him as he did with the other members. If you don't know whom I'm speaking about, I'll give you a few hints. His name doesn't start with a "J," he likes a lot of "bad" music (the Beastie Boys--ugh, Kiss--even Jeff Falk likes them), he has short hair (which seems to go against the "progressive metal" style and more towards "rock"), and he does inane things like flash his ass to the fans. I don't mean this in a negative way; I'm just saying that Derek Sherinian wasn't the only band member of that caliber. If all of the above seems negative or angry, please understand that it isn't meant that way. I'm looking forward to the new music and welcome Jordan Rudess. Perhaps I'm having a hard time personally, at this time, deciding whether my primary interest is progressive rock/metal or the broader category of rock. Either way, Dream Theater still fits in--perhaps they will more than ever. (So you'll still have to put up with me around here until Ryan Skadberg wises up and finally kicks me off this list.) I'm just anxious to find out the outcome of any band's personnel changes, including this one. I trust the people involved to make the right decisions; they should know the best. I just hope they handled it properly, because no one (except, perhaps, me) deserves to be cast aside like it seemed Derek Sherinian was at first. Good luck to Derek Sherinian (I'd e-mail him personally, but I'm sure that's the last thing he wants). Welcome aboard Mr. Rudess. And, in the off chance you read any of this, you don't worry. I'm not anywhere near as much of an apparently confusing pain-in-the-ass when you see me in the audience.

Hey guys,
As I could have (and did) forsee, there was a huge backlash concerning my last post. Please allow me to explain myself. For my comments concerning the talent of Jordan, I will not apologize. As a classically trained pianist and modern theorist and drummer, I am appalled at the fact that some can actually compare Derek to Jordan as a keyboardist. Of course that is only my opinion and deserves no more respect or weight than that which I should have given to all of yours. I would also like to apoligize for the comments I made about Derek's sexual orientation- I assure you all that they were made in jest and that I actually have a great deal of respect for him and all the work he has done, both with Dream Theater and others as a session/live 'hired gun.' As a personal evaluation, let me assure you that I am a complete idiot and for some reason I take great pleasure in striking raw nerves with people. As always, I chose to play the 'devil's advocate' and obviously I had forgotten that there were, as someone brought to my attention, 1000+ fans of the greatest band I have ever experienced that might have, and in fact did take my comments to be more than poking fun at a situation that was less than funny to more serious and mature fans than myself. My apologies. I hope that I can continue to enjoy and learn from your discussions and that you all will try to accept my apology and not just delete my future postings. Thanks.
Tom - Looking forward to Metropolis II!
