<<Here is the debate I want to see: what songs will JR play. I would hate to see someone his caliber have to sit through You Not Me or Take Away My Pain -- hell Burning My Soul is pushing it. Anyway, other than Anna Lee any other takes on what he will play? Personally I cannot wait until JR solo intro in Lines, somehow I think it will be just fine.>>

Id think that we prolly wont hear Anna Lee played live again. I see that as Derek's "Space Dye Vest." Which doesnt bother me since I never liked that song in the first place. ;-) It wil be interesting to hear Jordan play the old songs, especially the FII songs. I would guess they'd use LitS, maybe PS and ToT, and I think definitely JLMB. I dont know how much into the real heavy stuff Jordan is (Lie, Puppies, etc). LTE had its heavy moments (a spot in the middle of Freedom of Speech comes to mind), and in the pics from the LTE2 sessions, it looks like JP has used his 7 string on the new LTE album, so I guess we'll have to see about that.

Something else Ive noticed (about myself anyway, dunno about the rest of you). I find that, since Derek's departure, listening to any DT with Derek on keys feels...odd. And I also find that listening to the old stuff feels more natural, as well as LTE. Im sure some of you who were fans when KevMo left felt the same way about listening to DT w/Kevin. It would be interesting to see what others think.

I've been looking for this too. I would have recorded it myself but I almost got caught at an Aerosmith show before that and freaked out (I was a newbie taper at the time). So I decided to enjoy this show and left the recorder home. Now I fucking regret it. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Dream Theater is dead! Long live Dream Theater!

I hope Derek will be fine and will continue to follow his musical endevaours closely. He brought some important balls & chunk to Dream Theater IMO. I hope they, DT, can reinvent themselves with the addition of Jordan.

Derek was known to wear some VERY unusual threads, that's why he was being critiqued so much.

Regarding Jordan's coming to the band - a lot of people are getting pretty excited at the fact he will be playing on Metropolis part II. I thought that maybe the "new" DT will want to start completely fresh and therefore not record Metropolis Part II. I'm sure (well I'm not really - it's just my opinion) that Jordan would not want to work on someone else's keyboard parts the first thing he does in the new band.

    who knows?

This may mean it won't be on the new album - and we'll complain - and it'll come out on a special EP - with extra cool live stuff.

Perhaps things will turn out for the best :)

On Derek's only studio album he wrote most of Lines in the Sand and New Millenium. Those happen to be the two most "progressive" songs on FII. Derek has a rock background. But then again if DT is all progressive explain You Not Me, Cover My Eyes and Hollow Years. I think there is a lot of rock in DT.

Also kinda finny how Derek says his next album might be released on Magna Carta... I seem recall that label being a "progressive" one. Maybe playing with DT made Derek write more progressive stuff.

Boy, am I glad that Portnoy, LaBrie, Petrucci and Myung have finally left Dream Theater. Why, they were nothing but some prog heads in a real metal band. More power to Derek for throwing them out!

And what about the rumours I've heard about Jordan being gay and having cancer of the testicles?

My fondest musical moments with Derek: the very cool organ section in the middle of "Just Let Me Breath" from "Once In A Live Time" and any live performance of the intro to "Lines In The Sand". Any other takers?

Well, those who guessed Derek was kicked out were right. I believe the guys in DT will explain all that, but I have to tell it wasn't a surprise for me. Last summer when I met DT and Jordan in Hungary, it seemed to me Derek and DT has much more differences behind the scenes. I remember I made a funny comment speaking to Derek and Mike that if something happens with Derek (eg. someone cuts off his fingers ;))) they can call me anytime, I've already learned most of their stuff anyway. :) Now I'm jealous of Jordan and asked him why he didn't accept this job in 1994 and why he decided to be a member now. The answer: Jordan didn't joined the band in '94 because he couldn't go on the road for 18 month or so because he just had a baby and concerned about his family, at that point no one in DT was married, anyway now is the right time, because they all have family and situations are similar.

He doesn't go down as far as a floor tom on that roll, but it does start off with a bass drum flam, then into two sixteenth notes on each of the 4 octabons (tubular Mapex drum or whatever the heck ya wanna call em, I just call em octabons no matter what the brand they are cause I think it's the best name for them), then 2 sixteenth notes on the 8" tom and two on the 10" tom, making a total of 14 sixteenth notes. The 12 sixteenth notes on the toms are sixteenth note triplets, to me anyway, and I just kinda don't musically count double bass flam. Sounds close enough to me, but I've seen him play it live and on video a couple dozen times and he definitely stays on the top end of the set, never going past the 10" tom.

Ok, just to clear this little thread up, I think I'm pretty sure I know how Mike does the beginning of 6:00. He does two hits on the bass drum, then does 2 on the high octoban, then 2 on a lower octoban, then 2 on each tom going down which would be 8 hits. Bass-2 | H-octo-2, H-octo-2, H-tom-2, tom-2, tom-2, F-tom-2 There it is so get practicing!!! Matt....

    Hello Jammers,

I am surprised that two of my favorite CDs of 98 had no vote in the Ytsejam top album of 98. In addition to LTE, OiaLT and Rush Different Stages, I think that Attention Deficit (a LTE like project by Alex Skolonick) and Galactic Cowboys At the end of the day are great CDs. Just my opinion.

In addition, I just read (again) the liner notes to Once in a livetime and I noticed that DT thanks the band they toured with. Did these bands toured for the Infinity tour only? I am asking this because the Gaclactic Cowboys are not in the list.

    > From: Amanda Rosenblum <mildew@ucla.edu> > > I for one don't think DT owes me or any other fans an explanation...

You're right. They don't. What makes the guys in Dream Theater so very cool is that they will eventually explain the whole thing anyway. I don't feel this personel change for Dream Theater rivals the recent fiasco with Steve Augeri replacing Steve Perry in Journey....or the Van Halen circus...I think Dream Theater simply felt the same way that most of us do. Derek simply didn't fit too well. Sure, he did some really cool things on FII and OiaL, but he's not KevMo or JoRud! Give me a choice and I will always listen to ACOS off of Dance of Eternity instead of the studio version. I simply can not compare the KevMo part with the Derek part. Now, this isn't bashing Derek, It's simply my opinion. Of the three DT keyboardists, I like Derek the least. Does that mean I hate him??? absolutely not.

    > Whoever made the comment about DT making the next album sound like > I&W.. Im sorry to be rude but thats one of the stupidest things Ive seen > posted in a while. Being a musician is about changing and evolving, <SNIP>

I think the person that made that statement was me. Unfortunately, as always, what I said was taken out of context and misinterpreted. What I was suggesting was returning in the dirrection of I&W. That doesn't mean that DT should go in and record another I&W. What it means was that they might want to return to a more progressive record. What makes you think that the only two dirrections that Dream Theater has at their disposal are progressive and non-progressive??? U2 will take a completely different dirrection with every record!!!And they get away with it!! Now, Im not saying that Dream Theater should. Some groups are more palatable than others. But, lets just say that Dream Theater drove down prog street when they recorded WDADU, I&W and Awake. Let's also say that Dream Theater drove down semi-prog street during the recording of FII. What makes you think that they aren't growing if they turn back down prog street and then make a left onto prog avenue!!????

<Flame>As for being a musician, I am one. Let's not forget that a good percentage of the people on this board are probably musically inclined in some way or another. I don't appreciate the patronizing words in your post to make a point. I have more than enough faith in Mike Portnoy, James Labrie, John Petrucci, Jordan Ruddess, and John Myung to do what is right and record a good album of material that doesn't mimmic the sound of I&W. But lets face the bitter truth and swallow what might be a bitter pill for you. Dream Theater was far more successful with I&W than with FII. They might have come to the conclussion that they should be a little less compromising with their progressiveness. Let's not kid ourselves. A great deal of Dream Theater's work was made possible due to a whole shitload of petitions to EastWest. There was a point that the record company simply did not believe in Dream Theater. They might be deciding to return to a more progressive sound. Does that mean that they are not growing??? Absolutely NOT!!! You are thinking in a very 2 dimensional way. Actually, it's more like a two dirrectional way. There is no non-progressive and progressive. There are far more roads that haven't been travelled by DT. When I talk about going back in a progressive dirrection, I might very well be talking about 1 of an endless list of progressive dirrections. That, my friend, is the key to being a growing and evolving musician.</Flame>
