Well, apparently no one took me seriously the first time :)
I commented in an earlier post about the intro to Take the
Time. Anyone notice that the time gets really screwy around bar
9?? I cant figure it out for sure, anyone have a clue?
Polyrhythm? Overlapping time sig??

Just a little while back, someone cracked a joke saying their band was going
to be playing some song at 4X the normal speed. The "song" was actually
just 4 min and 33 seconds long of the musicians taking their place on stage,
with the noise of the crowd being the actual "music." If anyone remembers
what this is, can you please give me detailed info? I'm looking for name,
creator..where I can find even more info about it... Thank you very much!
Scott.
PS - No remarks about jordan from me...everyone keeps saying the damn same
things over and over and over again...I'm sick of it already :)

Well, if I remember correctly, this is Damon you're talking about. Don't
rip Damon, he's the man :) Yeah, maybe his idea of putting it on the jam
wasn't the greatest thing he's ever done, but did you ever think that
Bogie's site (dreamtheater.mit.edu) was perhaps so POORLY designed that
Damon could not even get to his email so that he could email him directly?!
On to my next thoughs...as though you cared. :)
Joe DeAngelo wins the award for being the best poster to jam #4597. In case
you didn't, read what he wrote AGAIN because this man speaks the truth:
>THE LAST WORD:
>People, be honest with me (and yourselves) for a moment: How often has
>Dream Theater let you down? The answer is probably either NEVER, or
>VERY, VERY RARELY.
This is SO VERY TRUE. Dream Theater is quite amazing...I must admit I
really had no clue just HOW much they've done for us until I received one of
Mark Bredius' mailings in which he listed all the various things DT, or
members of, had done in the year 1998. I thought the damn thing was never
going to end, I just kept scrolling down! Point being, this band does so
much...and yet there's always some complaint from some ungrateful asshole...
Let me take this further. The other day, I received a CDR copy of the
Rotterdam fan club show and I'm just amazed by the overall product. Except
for one thing. Whoever designed the artwork, and came up with the name,
should be drawn and quartered. The title is, for those of you who don't
know, "Once In A Livetime, the way it should be..." I'm sorry, but this
really pisses me off, that someone decided to just throw in those 5
words...I'm not going to make any comments about the OIAL that we are
blessed to have, but I will say, do you think maybe there's a reason WHY
they chose to put the Paris show on the offical CD?! I'm damn sure there
is!!! There are plenty of people out there who have never been to a DT
concert and to them, this is the closest they can get! And tell me, if you
were to see a DT show just ONCE in your life, would you really rather see
them play Metropolis I, maybe II, or some poppy Cover My Eyes? I think you
can see what I'm getting at.... The Rotterdam stuff is undeniably great
material, but thats what the 5YIAL is for! (I tend to think that more
diehard fans purchase the music videos...and diehard fans are more often the
ones who search after the rare material which the fan club show consisted
of) If you were so incredibly die hard, as am I, then you wanted to hear
the whole show yourself, and so you found someone to trade with you.
(Stress the trade, not buy.) So that brings us back to the original
point...the "way is should be.." Whoever designed that should be extremely
ashamed that they were to disgrace DT like that. I'm sure that all members
of the band, if they were to see that, would be hurt that some stupid fuck
ass fan was too ungrateful to appreciate ALL that DT has done for them and
to not understand why certain material was to be released. And yes, the fan
club show was partially released on the XMAS '98 CD. For info on joining
the fan club, go to www.dreamtheater.net I'm sure Itchy's got it there.
So one last "fuck off" to the one who is responsible for the design of the
above mentioned bootleg, and one last "AMEN" to Joe DeAngelo for putting the
sentiments I've felt for so long into words.
Scott.

Since jam traffic is so high, it seems like it would be a good time to
plug the Ytsejam shirt again. Celebrate a new era for the band in style
with a 100% cotton, extra-heavy weave. Do ya hate to see Derek go? Stop
whining. The ytsejam shirt is ultra-absorbent, for blotting up those

Okay, so what you're saying is that if your boss invites you to dinner at a formal restaraunt, that he'd be a dickhead if he gets pissed that you arrive wearing a pair greasy boxer shorts, cowboy boots and a Van Halen t-shirt? If you dress like shit, people will treat you like shit, it's the truth, take it or leave it. Just thought I'd throw my two cents into this. And I don't know what Marilyn Manson or his fashion sense have to do with that other guy's post, but hey whatever.

<<So they dumped Derek.
What the FUCK!!!
I'm about to proclaim Fates Warning my favorite band.
Hate mail me, of course..>>
Will do. Im sick and tired of hearing all this "DT kicked Derek out so Im pissed at them and Im quiting this list and they're not my favband anymore, and I thought they were better people than this, how could they kick him out" shit. You people bitch about Kevin not being in the band, then when they get a guy thats more suted for the band, and more like Kevin, you get upset. I cant even count the mass amounts of hypocrites on this list.
BANDS KICK PEOPLE OUT ALL THE TIME! It isnt anything new. Just cause the guy didnt leave on his own doesnt mean the band is a bunch of self centered assholes. Maybe they were fed up with Derek? Maybe they re-evaluated their situation and decided that it wasnt going to work out this way. IT HAS HAPPENED. And many times, there are better results in the end! Might I bring up another prog band, Pink Floyd. THeir first guitarist, Syd Barrett, was considered a genius, an innovator, and the biggest creative force in Pink Floyd. Syd's brain got so fried on LSD, that they HAD to kick him out of the band, it couldnt have gone otherwise. But you know what? They got Dave Gilmour. A MUCH more better guitarist and songwriter than Syd IMO. And look at where they've gone since then - Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, songs like Dogs and Comfortably Numb. Dont even try to tell me that they would have been better off with a brain dead Syd and they were mean assholes for kicking him out. The end result was better, and you know what? if they didnt think the end result was gonna be better, they prolly wouldnt have made the change.
Same goes for Dream Theater. If they felt that their music would have benefited more in the long run by keeping Derek, they would have. For some reason, they didnt, and there was no other choice but to dump Derek and get someone who they thought would benefit their music more. Jordan was that keyboardist.
My band kicked out our rhythm guitarist last year. And we didnt do it cause we hated the guy. We loved hanging out with him, and he was a great friend. The problem was, he wasnt learning the songs, he was constantly screwing up during the songs, and he just didnt care about the Rush covers and the Floyd covers and DT covers, but when we did Led Zeppelin he happily played his heart out. He thought the band was something other than where we wanted it to go. Besides that, he would never learn the covers, and at this time, we had no originals. We had no choice but to kick him out. He was pissed off for a while, but recently, he's become more open to us, and has even jammed with me once or twice since. You know what else? We have had more creative freedom to take our band where we wanted it, and it turned out for the best. Try to understand this for Dream Theater kicking out Derek. If they thought as a majority that they could take their music to where they wanted it with him in the band, he would still be in the band. So stop the "ask why" bitching. Live with it. And keep your mouths shut about the negative shit until you HEAR new material with JR on keys.
(Matt steps off his soapbox)
(and maybe into a fire?)

Yeah, they never let us down... last week, my cat was stuck in a tree, and Myung came right over and climbed up the tree backwards with his bass strengthened fingers and plopped my cat right out of the tree... My toilet was stuck the other night, and Portnoy came over with his plunger and just got it right working again... Well you know, my nephew had a b-day party the other week, and we had to blow up 4000 balloons and only had one hour to do it, but again... James came through... he blew like a llama in heat...
Too bad the llama left a pile of dung droppings called Falling Into Infinity on the bathroom floor... ah wells... Derek came up and mopped it right up afterwards...
They never let me down...

Pat,
I repeat what Jordan said word by word: "5 years ago it did not make sense in my life to make this big change. Many factors including the amount of touring planned at that time, family considerations, financial considerations and musical uncertainty. Now all that is a whole lot clearer! We will be able to make great music together I think and everything else is at a point where things just feel right."

Mike Bahr even sold his spare copies of the Lie single for $25. To me. I was very surprised he accepted my offer. I would have paid a lot more for it. Why? Because that is what it is worth to me to have it. Who's to say what it's worth? Who's to say what anything is worth? Why is one bean bag with eyes worth $5 and another worth $1000. It's worth whatever someone will pay for it. Supply and demand. Basic economics. Just because someone offers it for $100 doesn't mean someone will buy it for $100. I'm sure if they just wanted the music they would have someone tape or burn it. What do you care if someone buys it for $100? It's their money.
