A bit too easy this time. Python's Holy Grail, of course.

    Okay...

I take it back. I went back and listened to the OiaLT TTT. I forgot the "Freebird" jam, which IMHO is pretty darn fun. There's also the fact MP & JP are doing some vocal work there. Okay, let me put my flame-proof nomex suit on. I actually think that the OiaLT TTT is more fun. I'm not saying I don't like the JR TTT. I like 'em both. They both kick booty.

Anyway, I want to bemoan, for the umpteenth time on the 'jam, the medley thing the guys do live. I don't like that my "Scarred" mp3 from New Hampshire has the solos, but OiaLT doesn't. They go into ACOS IV a little too soon for my taste on OiaLT. Well, at least, I have both.

A lot of people have been stating that they think the new DT album might sound close to the LTE recordings because of Jordan coming aboard. That coupled with the fact that DT plan on recording writing and recording stuff in the sudio and leaving out the whole demo step just like in the recording of LTE. The way I see it though is that I think DT will take that chemistry to a whole new level. Think about it, not only can they have that same energy of writing and recording in the studio, but now they will have a lot more Time to write the material, not just a week. I think this means we will see even stronger *songs* as a whole compared to the ones found on LTE, and those songs were really strong to begin with! I think DT's writing has matured into this big awesome monster. I mean I thought their songs have always really flowed real well, but take that same progressive I&W sound and put that together with the songwriting level that was achieved on FII plus Jordan and I start to think I might understand what Mike P meant when he said that Jordan was more representative of where DT was planning on going into the 21st century. I guess it all come down to the fact that we will all just have to wait until the next album comes out.

    Later all

It's amazing. Isn't that a rather interesting turn DT is making ? For some reason, I don't see LTE as prog, I see is more as a hybrid of fusion jazz.

Is DT making this turn, really ?

    Needing enlightenment.

    Hello everyone....

I've just gotten home from the LTE show in Philly as the subject of this letter indicates...Anyway, the show rocked, but they sold out of shirts and I didn't get one! :-(

Anyway, I'm uploading an mp3 of Jordan Rudess' keyboard solo, so for all you Jordan fans/doubters/unknowers (see im tired...im making up words) out there, go check this out. Its to be found at www.erotomania.org/scott/files/LTE_JR_Solo_Philly.mp3 Well, its not actually up yet, I'm uploading it as I write this. And oh, that link may be wrong, so if the need be just go to /files/ then just wade through the list till you find the one you think it is... Yet one more note, I'm just leaving the computer on to upload...If it disconnects, I'll be asleep and won't notice, so if the link doesn't work, sorry, I'll fix it tomorrow :)

I also gave permission to bogie to add these to his site (hopefully I'll get more mp3s going sometime tomorrow - but first I need sleep!)

If that made sense, its a miracle.

    Scott. (PunkAss)

    LTE in NYC:

I got there early and hung outside for a few, listening to the soundcheck. It sounded great - it was them, all right. But it wasn't anything I'd heard before. Hot Diggity.

So a few hours later the show starts, and I was right up at the stage, maybe 2 feet from jordan. You all have setlists by now. It started with Osmosis..."this is nice", I thought to myself. A few minutes later, they SLAMMED into Paradigm Shift and the oddly pleasant scent of 300 people collectively crapping their pants wafted to my nose. And that pretty much set the tone for the next 1.5 hours.

It just never ended! I mean, it JUST... WOULD.... NOT.... RELENT! And now some specifics:

Bass and keys were both really high in the mix. I would say the bass was twice as high as usual. it was really high. At least, that's how it seemed.

The overall volume was great! Didn't need earplugs.

Jordan: Nothing I can say here. It's all common knowledge by now.

I know that myself, and the people around me, were all hoping for Ytsejam, or Puppies On Acid. That would have been great - but of course, in my heart, I knew they weren't just going to plow over tony like that. I guess I was sort of hoping he'd picked up a song or two and would want to play along.

The thing I heard during soundcheck, was either Acid Rain(the ending: fuck! fuck! fuckin'eyyy!) or Another Dimension, which I thought was so great... but it got a little monotonous. And that brings me to my fret.

    ..............................................................................

I put the little dots there because this is not totally related. I needed more than a paragraph but less than a new post. Anyway, the thing is this: I'm fretting over what the new album will be like. Sure sure, I fucking LOVE LTE! yeah! But with almost the same members, and making the album the same way, in the same time period, I'm afraid it will lack the depth and personality of Dream Theater. There's a certain something about LTE that slightly annoys me. I think it's the way it's like more icing, more surface(in fact i was wondering if that's how the name came about..surface tension, get it?) then a DT album has. And I'm speaking not technically, of course, but atmospherically. sure, LTE is layered and chunked like crazy, but it's missing that certain mood and tone and emotion that DT is all about. I don't know that just having vocals will change that.

On the other hand, lots of the demos are so much better than the finished product...maybe this way, they'll get songs closer to their original intention. That would be nice. Seems like they're better that way. Acos was, You not me, take away my pain... i say, the rough draft was better on those three songs.

Reminder: anyone going to a LTE show, and wants to do me a favor, please contact me. thanks a million!

What are your 10 favorite bands EVER, Dream Theater not included?

I'll be thinking about mine, then I'll send them to you.

    ------------

Also in response to whoever said Dream Theater is like a raving monster now, I couldn't agree more. And if DT99 sounds more like LTE, well, LTE is about the best music in the world anyway!

    Bye for now!

The Theater of Living Arts sounded great. My favorites were "Chris & Kevin's Excellent Adventure" and "Acid Rain." I went to the show with Kevin Madden. During the trip there and back we discussed such worldly issues as 80s video games, Star Wars, progmetal bands, Da Jam, and Derek. Kevin replies very quickly when he's spoken to, I'd say he keeps up with what you're saying just as fast as you do. While eating at a McDonald's we reasoned that if people were actually shaped like those little "throw litter away" people-figures with the pointy limbs that appear on the boxes the burgers come in, they'd fall into gratings all the time and get stuck. But getting out of jail would be really easy.

    Anyway.

The only parts of the show loud enough to cause pain were when Petrucci went crazy with the whammy pedal. Those notes were high and harsh, and he seemed to really enjoy them. :)

"Acid Rain" is a killer. For those of you who haven't heard this song from the forthcoming LTE 2 album, imagine ramming a sparking cable of about 80,000 volts into Mike Portnoy's back. Imagine holding it there for about six minutes. Now while Portnoy's limbs are surging with 80,000 volts, his three bandmates have to construct some kind of melody around the avalanche of sound that is Mike Portnoy's Centrifuge. I mean for the entire song Portnoy was on fire, nonstop motion, thundering this, thundering that, gradually yanking Petrucci into the cymbals through the sheer implosive forces he was creating. It was like watching "Twister" but with a wicked and unstoppable drummer randomly moving a cone of air around Philadelphia, sucking houses and cows up into the air. I'd say Portnoy sweated out about three pounds during that one song.

I was given many pieces of incorrect information about this show by an employee of the Theater of Living Arts. Wrong piece #1: the directions. The streets all existed in the general area around TLA, but the order they were dictated to me were completely wacko. Two of them never appeared on our trip, and no one in the area could tell me or Kevin where they were. Wrong piece #2: the opening act. Get this, the doors were to open at 8pm and an opening act was scheduled to go on around 9pm. I found out with much shock and confusion that THERE WAS NO OPENING ACT. Wrong piece #3: LTE was supposed to take the stage at 10pm at the earliest. Kevin and I entered the venue at approximately 10:10pm, to find that LTE had started at 9:30pm. If complaining would make someone at Theater of Living Arts loose their job, I'd get on the phone and make damage. Their shit was all fucked up.

All four members came out afterwards. Levin and I had an interesting discussion that featured him talking to me with a black pencap in his mouth, and I talking to him with the pencap from my silver marker in my mouth. A minute before he signed my LTE disc he said to someone, "ah, a paint marker... this one isn't working... I hate these things." So when I handed him my silver marker he already had his black pencap in his mouth from his own black marker. Put a pencap in your mouth and read these lines: "Isha shelher merker, I apolgise, I know ya hate yeez." "Theth okay, theth woynz woyking jush fyng." "Okay... Yith an ingkreshing langueege we have eah." "Yeah really." Levin's a funny guy.

Petrucci was his usual "tolerating" self. I always get the impression that he'd like the signing and corresponding Q&A to be over as quickly as possible. My only contribution to the flood of questions was "When's Necronomicon comin' out?" to which he replied with a Frankenstein-like groan without even looking at me, "eeeAAAAaaaagh." It was the sort of groan you'd do if your mom asked you for the seventh time to take the garbage out. I translated Petrucci's noise as "NEVER." :)

Best Petrucci line: (fan) "You were on good terms with Derek, right? He was a really nice guy, wasn't he?" (Petrucci, very sarcastically) "Uh YEAH..." His eyebrows went up on "YEAH" and he cocked his head to the side for a moment, the whole time not looking away from what he was signing, a combination that equals total sarcasm...

Next up was Portnoy, who almost got shoved out of a photo because there were so many people trying to get into it. Jordan Rudess followed a minute later. I snapped a few photos, including another "defend yourself at all times" from Portnoy. I didn't have anything to say to Rudess, so I shut up and watched him deal with the wave of Dream Theater fans who were now His Fans. ;)

Someone handed Portnoy a DT thing to sign and he was like, "Hey, I'm not in this band right now! I'm in Liquid Tension Experiment!"

On the way into the venue I noticed a cassette tape on a table to the right of the door, with a label that read "Liquid Tension Experiment, Philadelphia, 1/22/99." For reasons I may never understand, I had no idea what the tape was. Keep in mind that as far as I knew, Kevin and I were arriving on time. I had no idea 45 minutes of showtime had passed. I picked up the tape and examined it closely. I turned to the woman at the door and asked, "What's this?" She looked kind of surprised that the tape was in my hand and said, "Put that down! That's a recording! We had to eject a man earlier..." At that moment my hand made an involuntary tensing motion in the direction of my jacket pocket, but I realized what the item was TOO LATE... If anyone on this list thinks I'm some kind of infallible being, feel free to point out anytime in the future that I held an LTE bootleg in my hand and was dumb enough to not realize what it was, THEN dumb enough to ask the woman at the door what it was...

Tony Levin is one funky dude. I'd never seen him live before. The Chapman Stick is one funky instrument. I'd never seen one of those handled by such a master before.

Several times while in Philadelphia, Kevin and I were convinced we were going to die. I asked him if he had brought any firearms. He said no. I cursed myself for never having learned how to wield my black Mag-Lite properly...

Sorry to anyone inside the venue who thought I was blowing them off by not saying hi - I was looking on the ground for something small and black with the Roman numeral "III" on the front. :)

Mike Ostrich & Co. were there in full force. Kezcom and WhoFooldU were also there, as well as Andrew Miller and Saveur. I think there were two others who I recognized but whose names escape me at the moment. A sonic sniper was among us. He was a real punkass. D-Man was a no-show. Kez was nice enough to let me sit in his seat in the fifth row while he stood in the back getting a drink at the bar. There were seats there, but they weren't bolted down. Amazingly, at the end of the show they were still in perfect rows and there was no garbage anywhere. What tidy, responsible people progmetal musicians are...

You have never done anything but bitch about me on the Jam, whereas I have done nothing to you - except perhaps be writing for international music magazines, have two diplomas in music, a press pass to the NAMM Show and be able to play several instruments, while also being female and a fan of DT - oh, does that make me a prog rocker? ;-)

You started it under the name of Icarus or (whatever it was) by going on about the 'NikBrooks self-appreciation society' and the NikJam.

Now you are bitching about me being IceQD (thanks for the confirmation Fire & Ice).

Obviously you are a complete arsehole with a jealousy problem! In fact, you should be apologising publicly to me on the Jam not privately with added sarcastic comments.

The great thing about this reply, IF it makes it to the Jam, is that I cannot be removed from the list because I am not subcribed to it!

Anyone want a Mike Portnoy used drum stick apart from Fire? I'll be taking bids (joke)
