Nah! I don't think so! :) It's different kind of music man, and they're
both good, but it's like LTE (IMHO)
> My friend MATt said he didn't really like the RMP

Yeah, reminds me of my experinece with RMP! I saw them open for DT in
Budapest! They opend with the kics-ass tune (don't recall which one,
some of the last songs on the labum) and it sounded AMAZING! Thru all
RMP gig I just couldn't comperehend what kind of music is this: it was
so new, so fresh, so ..... good :)
Live they sounded amazing! On the way out of the gig I bought the album!
But when I heard it at home I was a little dissapointed, because it
didn't have that power they had live! But after 20 listens I came to
like the album! I'm not noise-crazy adolescent, but for this album you
really have to turn up the volume to hear everything and feel it
completely! :)
> Good stuff. And it rocks, contrary to what Mr "It's Soft!" says.
Yo, pass theez peace pipe around! ;)
(I ain't no Mr. Soft, I hate Kenny G. :)
> How heavy do you want an all-keys-n-drums album to be?
You're right here! :) But I meant more for the compositional direction
of Ruddes and Rod!
Although what Jordan does on LTE is simple AMAZING!
> I guess he could have added some "Erotomania" like organ stuff to make it
> heavier, but...
Hey, I never said I don't like RMP! :)
I just think the music is softer! It also has that pop feel on many
places! :) More "easy-acceptable" melodic lines! :) This point was
mentioned buy a friend who didn't like RMP!
Anyway, let's see what will happen!
But I WILL miss Derek's weird key sounds. I hope Jordan can make them
too!

Hi folks,
I'm assuming not too many of you have Magna Carta's Steinway to Heaven CD, and thought some of you would like to hear some more Jordan stuff.
I've uploaded an MP3 of Chopin's "Revolutionary Etude" performed by the amazing Mr. Rudess. Trust me, this kicks MUCH ass. :)
I HOPE this is working correctly, but I'm new to the whole page making/file uploading thing, so if it doesn't work, e-mail me or something. Thanks!

All of those pretty much fit, with perhaps Marillion and Spock's Beard being in the "neo-prog" category, both in style and activity times (80s and 90s). The definition of "prog" is very hard to come by. It usually denotes a certain complexity of music, with lots of polyrhythms, time signature changes, and (sometimes) chromatics and mode changes. Compositions are typically longer than standard rock compositions and structurally different. Electronic instruments are often used in "prog." That's about all I can say.
> What happened to that sympho rock stuff? I know many folks saying Yes > and Genesis is sympho rock!
Symphonic rock is sometimes regarded as a sub-genre of prog, sometimes not. Depends on whom you ask. Yes and early-period Genesis are very definitely prog for me, though.

Where to start? Well it was definitely worth the 4 1/2 hour drive from Ithaca. I left at 3:30...got there a little after 8. The band went on at around 9:30. Set list is as follows...this isnt exact but close...I think.
Osmosis Paradigm Shift Kindered Spirits Another Dimension Freedom of Speech State of Grace By Accident Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure Universal Mind
Encore: Acid Rain
Like I said...I THINK that was the setlist. Jordan was UNREAL. Tony was UNREAL...same with Mike and John...they jammed it out a lot. In the middle of Universal Mind, Jordan did this incredible piano solo which answered any questions I had about DS/JR. Just overall, an incredible show!
Fast Forward...about an hour and a half after the show. You gotta excuse me. I realize that a lot of you guys have probably met these musicians before as have I...well I met Mike at one of his clinics...but I spoke to all of them and here is what happenned...
Tony Levin
Me: "Tell Robert Fripp I said Hi." Tony: OK
John Petrucci
Me: "If I created my own religion you would be my God." John: "That's a scary thought."
Me: "So John, did you guys part ways with Derek on good terms?" John: "As good as possible. He was really surprised." The dude next to me: "But Jordan is way better." John: "Yeah." (I almost shit myself.)
Me: "Ya know where I can get any Meanstreak CD's?" John: "No."
Me: "John, any more guitar clinics in the next year? Possibly East Coast music mall?" John: "I would like to."
Some dude next to me: "John, is Metropolis II gonna be on the next Dream Theater CD?" John: "I'm not telling you!"
Mike Portnoy
Me: "Mike, the new material sounds great." Mike: "Thanks a lot. Ya know there's gonna be a 17 minute song on the new LTE CD." Me: "Is it gonna be a jam?" Mike: "No. A full length song!" Me: "Is there gonna be a jam like last time?" Mike: "Yeah."
Me: "Is Metropolis II gonna be on the next Dream Theater CD?" Mike: "Well, we already have it recorded, and it is a possibility." Me: "All the fans want it to be." Mike: "I know."
Jordan Rudess
Me: "You are an incredible musician" Jordan: "Thank You." Me: "I loved that classical solo you did." Jordan: "Thank You." <smiles>
And that was it. I got all their autographs and I usually tense up in situations like that but Mike and John answered some important questions. After the show I got a Philly Cheese Steak and a Cherry Coke with my friend Teresa and then we left. Didn't get home til 5:30 am. Was it worth it? HELL FUCKING YEAH!

I'm pretty sure the solos were cut out of Scarred on OiaLT to make more songs fit on the first disc. I do know for a fact that they played the solos that show in Paris, as some of us have the unedited show on tape. ;)

Jam,
Words do not describe the show seen last night in Philly. It was unbelievable to see Mike, Tony, John and Jordan play the way they did. As mentioned before, yes they can play everything at the speed it's on the CD.
It's a shame that everyone is not going to be able to see these guys, but lets hope the show is video taped and recorded so everyone can see and hear what I'm calling, 'One of the, if not best, shows EVER!'
Having seen DT about 8 or 9 times, I've never saw Mike and John play at that level at a show before. Unbelievable.
Tony, I've seen a few times and he looked like he was saying, "God damn, I'm getting too old for this stuff!" I felt band, because during 'Acid Rain' he lost his power or something (sorry, I don't know the technical terms). But with a little help from Jordan's tech he got it going to finish the show.
Now Jordan, who I say at Birch Hell for HFTH '96 (I believe), was simply amazing. His solo was one of the bests I've ever heard. Some parts reminded me of Rick Wakeman, but other than that -- my mouth hit the floor.
Thanks guys for an UNBELIEVABLE SHOW!!!!!
If Mike's reading this, I have to apologize for my friend last night. He's a guitarist that love's John and when he met you, John had already left. My friend was the big black guy you came up to you and asked you to tell John, that no other man has made me (go to ecstasy) before and to thank him for that. --- It made Mike laugh pretty good, it was funny though.
Take care,

Every now and then, I send this to the jam as kind of a funny way of descibing what "prog" music is (and all of it's sterotypes).
So, without futher adu...
>How exactly do you define progressive rock?
I loved this reply which appeared in the Letters column in the September 1993 issue of Keyboard magazine:
To be classified as prog rock, music must adhere to the following criteria:
1. Songs can be no less than seven minutes in length, except in the case of the prog rock/techno crossover, in which case five minutes is acceptable.
2. Anything in 4/4 is immediately disqualified.
3. The composition must contain at least three of the following instruments: Mellotron, Hammond B-3, Moog Modular (Minimoog acceptable) or any synth made before 1984 and weighing more than 100 lbs. Instruments must also go out of tune after every third song.
4. Performers must be able to play in several time signatures at once, with no one part recognizable as a singable melody.
5. A minimum of five key changes is required for each five minutes of music.
7. Try to find a beat. If you can't, it's prog rock.
8. If the composition wanders aimlessly, it's definitely either prog rock or Dave Stewart on painkillers.
9. If anyone under the age of 30 likes it, it is not prog rock.
10. And finally, if you can dance to it, it isn't prog rock.
Steven W. Wagenheim Roselle, New Jersey
This response is from from the Letters column in the October 1993 issue of Keyboard:
If a band meets five or more of the following criteria, they're prog:
1. At least one member uses Greek mythology or Zen koans as lyrics - at any rate, nobody knows what the hell the singer is talking about.
2. A typical song lasts longer than your average shower.
3. On many songs, each musician plays in an entirely different meter and/or key.
5. The keyboardist has more synthesizers than fingers.
6. Bill Bruford was a drummer at some point.
7. Their album covers depict strange animals crawling over weird geological formations into which blue-pigmented children have carved stairways.
8. They can sell out an arena and still have more lights on stage than people in the audience.
9. Rolling Stone and Phil Collins would both rather burn alive than hear this group's latest album.
Terrell Miller Norcross, Georgia
And I can't forget Keith Emerson's reply: "It is music that does progress. It takes an idea and develops it, rather than just repeat it ... Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down [and] the other way around, and explores its potential."
- mike.
