Firstly, the LTE CDs are done and ready to be traded for. Jump to my web
page at www.erotomania.org/scott to see my list and set up a trade. (The
LTE CD isn't up there yet, but its done and ready to go.)

Secondly, I've put up another sound clip, this one being Osmosis right into
Paradigm Shift. Yeah, its huge...12 megs. But there was no way I could
split these two up. Go see for yourself, its GREAT material that just hits
you inbetween the eyes, and never lets up during the entire 13 min or
    however long!

    mp3

Chances are once bogie gets this, he'll stick it up on his site, so if his
    server's faster, go there. http://dreamtheater.mit.edu

For those of you who think the files too big, go get Getright at
www.getright.com and leave the computer downloading over night. It's worth
    it.

It sounds like communism. Starts out with a good idea to please all, but
eventually, its all gonna come crashing down. Im not bashing those who
want to start this list. If you can make it work the way you intend (no flame
wars or NDTC) and have it last as long as the Jam has, fine. I congradulate you.
But I would like to point out some statements that I think just couldnt work out.
Im giving constructive critisism, not trying to bash this idea.

<<(1) Mainly about Dream Theater and their music, but also news/information
about other bands/solo acts and ex-members of bands.>>

    A mailing list that
focuses mainly on Dream Theater is gonna get boring after a while. I mean, how
long can you talk about only DT and DT related artists (the impression I get is that
these related artists are bands that DT members have participated in and ones,
like Fates Warning, that DT seems to have close ties with). The great thing about
the jam is that its not limited to Dream Theater. I was on a Pink Floyd mailing list
a while back called the Rusty Wire that refused to talk about anything other than Floyd.
After 2 months or so, the topics got stale and uniteresting.

<<3) Encourage musos themselves to post info (or those who run their websites)
eg Mike Portnoy about gigs, other projects, albums, etc.>>

People on the jam do do this, you know. Mike posts about upcoming gigs, and
Ive also seen guys from Superior, Event, and Empty Tremor post about their
    latest news occasionally too.

<<(4) Female musos to be encouraged to participate, whatever their age and
inexperience, so they can learn more without being bitched at and told to shut
up. We need yin and yang!>>

whoever said that females weren't encouraged? Its not like the Jam is stuck
in the early 1900's where "a woman should stay in her place...the kitchen." I have
nothing against female musos, and actually, Im happy when I do see really stong
female musicians who can play exceptionally well.
This reason just seems to focus in on recent bitchings towards Ayame Yuki
which, to my understanding, was because she came off as a really obnoxious prick
that stated things which defied music theory. If a girl stood up in a bar and
said, "you know what? the sky isnt blue, its green!" and carried on and on about how
she was right and everyone else was wrong, people would be laughing and bitching too.
Its not because she was a girl, but because she was acting like an asshole.

<<(8) Info about good music other than prog/rock to be included eg., if Madonna
does a great album which she just has.>>

Doesn't this contradict your first statement?

<<(10) Absolutely no Bitche Jam flaming of artists or members of the list.>>

Yes, we'd all love to live in a society where everything is peaceful and calm and
no one complains. Unfortunately, this is reality. To say that "no flames" are
allowed is stiffiling the members opinions. Actually, I like a fair amount of flames.
I think it keeps the jam interesting, and when certain people get out of control,
Skadz will remove them. Its simple as that. Too much of one thing is bad. Like you
said, yin and yang. The Derek flames recently brought up some interesting topics,
and for the first time in a while, I would read the entire jam, rather than just skip through
it. Its like a good story. There has to be an antagonist, and the flames do just that.

Keep these comments in mind when you create this new list.

    Matt

It was meant entirely tongue in cheek. I am lucky to have my own domain
and shit (I used to work for the provider)... I mean, as a college student,
I wouldn't be able to afford much beyond *Free* either. I'm not putting
anyone down seriously there... hotmail has its purpose... some people want
to abuse it, but I know that's the minority. I somewhat apologize for the
    somewhat offense. :)

    >From: IceQD@aol.com
    >Subject: A New DT List?

You know, I'm not one to hold grudges, seriously... but how can you
seriously act as though you're above the things you're complaining about? I
mean you have done your share of name calling, and have been caught in your
share of bullshit (did you get a chance to finish your research?). You're
campaigning for things that are not issues on this list, and are apparently
attempting to change the purpose of a list that you don't control (who knows
though... maybe you'll beat Calvin to its creation). This list keeps
growing, and most of us really like the way it works out. Even flame wars
    are occasionally colorful.
Furthermore, most of us guessed that you weren't going to leave when you
sent your "Departing letter". It just didn't seem like you would be so
classy. Actually, scratch that. Classy is not to even give an
unsubscription notice to the jam. But back to the reason for my comments:

    >(1) Mainly about Dream Theater and their music, but also news/information
    >about other bands/solo acts and ex-members of bands.

This is one of the designated purposes of this list (and if you'd been
around a while, you'd know that we've been on top of this stuff for years).

    >(2) Nothing long winded, post in sections (part 2 next time, etc) or give a
    >website address where further info can be found by those interested.

If the message is relevant, the length is not. There is a cutoff length
for posts on the list server, and posts beyond that length are returned to
sender. There is no benefit in further restrictions.

    >(3) Encourage musos themselves to post info (or those who run their
    websites)
    >eg Mike Portnoy about gigs, other projects, albums, etc.

Mike hasn't needed any encouragement so far. Plus, as there is no
perfect world in which to run this new UtopianJam you're not going to be
able to keep all unfriendly opinions quelled. No one wants to subscribe to
a list in which only positive comments are allowed (read up on the Megadeth
list problems). It just goes against the concept of free communication.

    >(4) Female musos to be encouraged to participate, whatever their age and
    >inexperience, so they can learn more without being bitched at and told to
    shut
    >up. We need yin and yang!

You bother EVERY single female jammer I've met (except Ayame). There is
no sexism on this list. But furthermore, there's no need to be politically
correct. No one is being specifically rude towards people because of their
sex (and you can't show an example in which someone has, except the
sarcastic backlashes against your little spasms) and those who attack people
based on age are in the minority (though age IS significant in many
    situations on this list.)

    >(5) Info on rock and muso magazines and extracts of articles, worldwide
    (with
    >website info).

    >(6) Post details of mp3, boots, music gear (mainly website addresses?)

    >(7) Related info (books, films, conventions, tribute bands, etc) to be
    >included.
    >>(8) Info about good music other than prog/rock to be included eg., if
    Madonna
    >does a great album which she just has.

These things are already taken care of on this list. When people find
    info, they post it.

    >(9) Have a regular 'non-profit' exchange forum for musical rarities etc,
    'I'll
    >show you mine if you show me yours'.

This is more work than you think. However, it's already being taken
care of (and has been in the works for months. Visit
    http://dreamtheater.mit.edu

    >(10) Absolutely no Bitche Jam flaming of artists or members of the list.

Deal with it. Flames are not appropriate, but they happen, because
people lose their tempers. Anyone who has been here a while can recall Mike
Portnoy flaming someone on the jam. Should he be banned? This is
ridiculous. Do recall, you are not innocent of "bitching."

    >The person who runs the list should have plenty of TIME and INTEREST
    available
    >to police it and send a warning at the FIRST SIGN of a Bitche Jam thread.

This proposal equates to controlling the freedom of information on your
UtopiaJam. You won't keep many subscribers.

    >However, we don't suggest a censored (moderated) list.

What do you mean by "police" then? If you have such an interest, do the
research, and set up a list by these guidelines. Let us all know when it's
up. Then we'll see how you do. I've run a mailing list before. I take a
great interest in this little experiment.
I think it's more than a little bit inappropriate for you to be taking
credit for some of the ideas in the "part 2" post. I think we all know
where you stand, and if you're done, we would all like to see you either
follow your own guidelines (thus keeping yourself honest) or follow your
original intent of hopping along to greener pastures. And tell "Fire" I
    said hey. :)

And no, you're not kicking ass. You're just being pathetic. I tried to take this private, because I'm sure people are sick of it. You felt the need to break basic ethics of communication, so it's public again.

That movie did indeed have a bizarre soundtrack. Here's some highlights:

Situation : song (like the SAT's) Christine Ricci tapdancing in the bowling alley : King Crimson "Moonchild" Vincent Gallo goes in strip club : Yes "Heart of the Sunrise" (WTF??) Closing Credits: Yes "Sweetness"

The score for the movie, if I'm remembering correctly, was done by Mr. Gallo himself, who also wrote and directed it. Not a bad picture. Dunno about the trailer, though.

    Hi All ...

Well, I just spent the last few hours catching up on some jams to get some sort of idea of what is going on. I think I read about 20 jams and I don't even know where to start this mail because of my complete amazement of some people on this list.

Let's try and start with some of the various things I noticed:

    a) Derek/Jordan - Ddn't we have enough of this with Kevin/Derek? Why can't you people have a DISCUSSION instead of everything turning in to a fight or a flamewar? Why? I ask just one thing on this list and it is to think before you send a post to the list. DO NOT reply based on emotions, PLEASE. Does a PLEASE help? I don't know what else to say. Also, one thing I have made VERY clear in the past is that I do NOT want people keeping up threads from hell. Something like this IMMEDIATELY qualifies once it leaves a discussion phase.

    b) A New Mailing List. First off, I don't know where some people found their high horses, but it sure wasn't Calvin leading them out of the stables. The mailing list Calvin suggested was a techno geek mailing list which would discuss structures of songs and music theory and the like. It was _NOT_ a new DT mailing list, it was a music geek list. And I hope Mike summed this whole discussion up in his post with these two lines

"Shit...If I haven't unsubscribed yet...you'd be a pussy to...... If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.... "

    c) Top XX Lists. Not allowed, period, I am not getting any farther in to this.

    d) Complaints on the jam. I was very unhappy to see a bunch of complaints on the jam. If you have complaints or see things getting out of control, or don't like something, EMAIL ME NOT the jam. I will take care of it.

    e) Taking things to personal mail. I saw a number of posts which most DEFINATELY shold have been taking to personal mail. Please take this junk off the list please.

    f) Excessive Quoting. When replying to a mail to the jam, please include AS LITTLE of the message you are responding to as possible. If someone wants to read your reply, they probably have read the original post already anyways, so you don't need to repost it.

    g) One liners. One line replies are fine as long as:

    1) You don't include a sig 2) You don't include a TON of stuff from the original message 3) it's not a stupid crack 4) it contributes SOMETHING to the discussion

I'm sick of one line posts that say nothing and just waste space.

    h) Signature files. 4 or 5 lines, people. Two page signatures are NOT accpetable.

    i) Posting of private emails. This one is an EXTREME pet peeve of mine. I tell people in all these messages that I send out to get better about TAKING things to private email and when someone comes back and sends private email to the jam, it pisses me off greatly. This is a violation of the person who sent you the mail's privacy and just plain bad taste. This is OFFICIALLY since it wasn't ever official before a "Two Strikes for the Price of One" offense. Anyone ever doing this will get kicked off and banned from the jam no questions asked.

    j) Sending mail to the jam when you aren't on it anymore. The _ONLY_ time I want to see mail from a former member of the list is when they have important information about Dream Theater. You leave this list, don't bother us anymore. You want to bother us, get back on the damn list.

    k) MIME/HTML posting to the jam. You CAN TOO fix this. If you aren't sure how to, send me email and I let me know what mailer you are using and I will go figure it out for you and tell you how. People continuosly posting in mime, will be removed,

    l) Jokes on this list. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO, PLEASE. Got Point?

    m) Responding to idiots posting to the list. Megadave's post should have been replied to in private mail telling him how to get off the list, there SHOULD NOT have been 10 posts to the jams telling us all how much of an idiot he is. I think we all knew it already, thanks!

OK, it's 3am and that's all I can think of right now. I'll probably think of some more as the next few jams come out as well. Basically guys, just think before you send something to the list. I am on a zero tolerance level right now and plan on sending out warnings as I see stuff. And as the rule goes, two strikes and you are OUT. Listen to good ole Mike:

"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.... "

Why? It's called private e-mail for a reason. Also, if it's sent to you private, it's probably out of respect to those who don't want to read a bunch of shit. You're not being cool or brave or spreading girl power or some stupid shit like that when you post private e-mail to the jam. I urge you to reconsider this decision.
