Hi all
been keeping a low profile lately. I didn't want to get involved in the Derek bashing or the Eyes Kweyn flaming. Here are a couple of my more recent thoughts (even some Dream Theater content - most unusual for me).
Will the next Dream Theater album sound like Liquid Tension Experiment? I think not. A lot of people seem to be forgetting the increasing influence and input of a quiet and reserved Korean guy. Mr. Myung's style is completely different to that of Mr. Levin, and I'm sure that John won't just blindly play what the other guys "tell" him to. Will the arrival of Mr. Rudess lead to major changes? Hard to say. I'll just have to be patient, and then say aye or nay when the new album arrives. My personal ideal producer would beWaldemar Sorychta. Any one else agree?
Do you like Liquid Tension Experiment? Then go listen to the stuff by the first line up of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I would be willing to bet that I could put up mp3s of some of these tracks, tell you that they were from the new Liquid Tension Experiment album, and some people would believe me. Excellent stuff, especially the live album "Between Nothingness And Eternity". And this stuff is a lot older than many of the people on the list. Go get it - I'm sure Mr. Portnoy would agree. Also, Jerry Goodman (violin) played with the Dixie Dregs for a while, as did Mr. Morgenstein, who in turn played with Mr. Rudess, who in turn played with ...

Like Graham Borland from wee bonnie Scotland, I too have fallen for the charms of Anneke van Giersbergen, the wonderful singer with The Gathering. I was lucky enough to see them live last week, and also to get to chat with the band before and after the concert. Knockout gig, excellent performance, really nice people, and Anneka just oozes natural charm and grace. My choice of "How To Measure A Planet" as album of the year was confirmed.
Dream Theater must be paying Mr. Rudess a lot of money, because he seems to have his own formula 1 racing team.

I believe your "huerta" is actually a Ratemacoue (ratt-em-a-cue) and it's called that because that's what it sounds like. I'm no drummer, but I was raised by one. I'm not even going to try to undertake the intro to 6:00, but I can play most of it, using RotoToms to simulate the octabans... I love the hi-hat work.

First, a general apology to the jam. I got frustrated and blew my stack. As Skadz said, these things should not have been vented on the jam.
Secondly, this is *only* a general apology to the jam. It should not be construed as an apology to any person whom I have personally attacked, because all such attacks, while possibly excessively vociferous, were brought on by yourselves.
Additionally, I was going to offer a public defense to various points raised, but I will make these responses private, even those which address some outright lies (this means you, Mr. Harold Richards), as I have no desire to engage in any sort of protracted public argument on the issues at hand, which are completely irrelevant to this list.

Now, when I buggered off before Christmas, it seemed a safe assumption that nothing much was going to happen. I get back, and find about 100 'jams in my in-tray, and DT missing their keyboard player. This has probablyall been done to death ( I only skimmed over those 'jams ), so sorry for covering old ground; but I say:
1) The first DT stuff I heard was FII, and I really liked the whole style. To be honest, I'm glad I missed the Kev/Derek wars, 'cos I never saw what the big deal with Kev was. 2) I noticed that some guy said that Awake didn't have much keyboard stuff. Okay, but isn't that why Kev left anyway, because it was all getting too heavy ( and then after he'd gone, they make FII...)? 3) Oh please God, let the new album be progressive rather than "Prog". 4) Someone commented that maybe now we can go back to the old logo. Well, I hated the logo on FII, and the OIaL / 5YIaL one just looks like a logo for a kids TV series. Mike, and the rest of DT: can we please have back that nice looking logo; the one we all know and love, the one that 99% of the DT-related stuff I see on- and off-line uses??? The one that people actually LIKE? 5) Jordan Rudess...Everyone's going "Oh, this is fucking ACE!!!", but I dunno...I don't know his stuff apart from LTE, but I get the impression that it's sort of...changed the balance in the band, y'know? Like, it'll be more on the proggy side, with less of the heavy stuff, or the ballady stuff. I dunno if that's good or bad. 6) Tomwalling@hotmail.com (ytse#4583) is the scum of the Earth, and as soon as I can be bothered, I'm going to kick his arse around miles.
I declare a race to see who's fastest to kick MY arse for some of the above.

It will be an instrumental album, with people like Virgil Donati on it.. and according to derek "its gonna be much more Prog, killer players!" and of course its supposed to come out in may. Interesting thou...him refering to his solo album as "prog" (he then commented on how he was 100% proud of the music for the first time in a long time) when were all judging him on his hatred or disliking of the genre...

Because I have a 160 IQ, I went out and ordered one of Ron Thal's albums (Adventures of Bumblefoot). I specifically wanted the album with the track "I can't sing the blues", a track that Wacky had played for me once when we were jamming that blew my head right off my shoulders. Unfortunately, I don't remember which album that track was on, and didn't get a track listing of the two albums before I ordered them. Can someone (C'mon, Ptacek, I know you're out there) clue me in? I'm new to the list (absent for 4 years qualifies that), so please be kind...
The whole "keyboard player" thing (so I'm not typing the names all the time) is blown way out of proportion. I think Kevin's work was incredible on IAW and Awake. I just picked up FII and have been playing it non-stop. Derek's expertise is well demonstrated. His exit from DT will be felt. I don't know much about Jordan, except what the official web site says, but his credentials sound good. I'm more than anxious to hear his contributions to Metropolis II when it comes out on the new record.
I've always felt DT was one of the premier bands in music and reading the Jam shows the fan's devotion to DT, regardless of how appropriate or inappropriate it appears to be. I still listen to IAW every day, as I have for the last 4 years. I will always be a monster fan to the band.

Simple ACOS question: Why are the YtseJammers thanked in the liners of Acos? If it's in the FAQ I=20 must have missed it.
Bootlegs. I am a bootleg-novice (want to start trading soon) and I was just wondering about the "rules" of bootleg=20 trading\selling. If I buy a bootleg from for excample Scarred, is it ok for me to copy it and trade\sell this to other people? Can I put other people's bootlegs (the people who made them) on my own CDR and sell\trade it?
I want some info on the Birch Hill show 12/26/98. Was this the first of the Chrismas shows? Is this the show that they had to start over again on some songs? etc. I want this information because I like to know some background on what I listen to, and I have downloaded some Birch Hill mp3's=20 from "bogie"'s page ( http://dreamtheater.mit.edu )
Now the FAQ. I really don't care who does the updating as long as it gets done! but.... Since Chris Merlo (that's his name, right?) used to do it (and he did fine!) maybe that would be the best sollution. Hope this change can happen soon.
