I know the Race pretty well but I don't hear anyway part of it!

    Maybe you're wrong?

Heck, this isn't so spectatular song! Not that it's not good, but after
reading someone's post I imagined a song that will make Paradigm Shift a
Kenny G. ballad! :) I expected too much and got average.
Maybe the studio veriosn will be beter! This one sounds just like
lunatic improvisation over Mike's rhythm! It's not defined in a way!

Sorry but that is my IMHO! :)

Good point! They definately have different sounds. Tony Levin tends to have that "sliding" sound that you find on fretless bass (and the stick). Personally, I find that sliding sound to be a distraction. It's very distinctive, but it's not my prefered bass sound. That will be a major difference in the DT sound versus the LTE sound.

Ok the songs are really cool...hm if people want to comment on this by private email its cool with me... so far ive noticed : - Another Dimension: pretty cool tune...although towards the end theres this section that JR plays with an accordion type sample which really bothers me, apart from straying completely from the rest of the song.. it really sounds quite silly to me..and i mean..im not one to knock experimental stuff, i love EVERYTHING Al DiMeola puts into his songs...be it eastern, latin or otherwise sounds...but i dont know..this sounds silly to me. -Biaxident: jsut a beautiful tune. -Universal Mind: is it me or they fucked up the beggining of this real bad? and again at around 1:25 when they repeat that pattern..they fuck it up again? I mean hell i cant play that in my most farthest dreams..but of course im not in the same league as JP and JR...and i think the stuff from Paradigm shift would be a lot harder to do.. and they do very well on that. Anyways im not that sure if this appropriate <sp?> for the new and improved ytsejam :) if not..well we can discuss privately...

It's time to nominate the best DT quotes of 1998, folks. Send me (matt2518@gladstone.uoregon.edu) your nomination (the quote, and a source where we can double-check the quote) between now and Sunday, 1/31/98, and it'll be added to the nominations list. The quote has to have been spoken or written sometime between 1/1/98 and 12/31/98 by a member of DT (at that time).

On 2/1/98, I'll post the list of nominees and ask for your votes for the top 5 quotes. Then, on Valentine's day, we'll show our love for DT with the winners of the 1998 DT Quotable Contest.

It's all in good fun... Enjoy!

Hello! Here's a few thought to rest a bit from the Der/JR thread, that I suppose continues far ahead from me.

CyberDuke wrote: "I was listening rock/hard rock for quite long. I thought I know almost all worth bands from that time! But I was deadly wrong. Then I hear about a band called Focus and they blew me away: originality, awesome playing, heavenly musical arrangements. Then I discovered Camel - again the same. Recently I become familiar with a band Gentle Giant and everyone tell me that if I like Yes and Jethro Tull (which is true) I'll LOVE them! And I still didn't find them!"

Fine taste! Focus was an incredible band from Holland, and I would suggest (to those interested) to pick up their "Hamburger Concerto". It is certainly a marterpiece, quite overlooked. The main song is about 20 min long and contains a bit of Brahms's 'Variations of a Theme by Haydn' (I think the name is right). Their music was a bit like Jethro Tull with a lot of medieval and classical music structures and a bit of jazz grooves. They had Jan Akkerman on guitars and Thijs van Leer is a keyboard and flute virtuoso. Another excellent band from the Netherlands was Trace. Very similar in style. Marillion drummer Ian Mosley played in one of their albums, I can't quite recall now, don't have the album with me at the moment, but he was awesome there.

Onto DTC: I'm starting to wonder about all DT leftovers that have been recorded and never put on a CD, y'know, the things that ended up floating on the net as mp3's, and I think it would be very nice if DT kept them away for a few more years, and when they've got enough leftovers with Jordan, they could 'compile' them and release them all at once, in a nicely designed 4CD boxed set, similar to the King Crimson, or Led Zep, or Yes boxes, with a nice, thick book, full of pictures, a family tree, comments, anecdotes, the band's history, etc... I know it's not too feasible for a band like DT, but who knows.

Hello! Hey, I just listened to the mp3 of Jordan Rudess' solo from I don't know which LTE concert, and nobody has mentioned that most of the solo is made up of a song from the Rudess Morgenstein Project (I forget which one it is). When I read some opinions that said their doubts about Jordan disappeared when they heard the solo, I was expecting something new. It's a great solo, but it's actually a song off of RMP. That's it.

No, I believe my "huerta" is a "huerta." A ratamacue is a diddle, followed by a 16th note triplet, and an accented eighth note. I can see how you might think this is it, but if you listen, after the ruff (or diddle)on the bass drum, there are 3 notes very close together, then the rest are slightly slower. To explain the correct way (with the Huerta) I will explain note by note: /------3----\ /----3---\ /---3---\ /---3---\ 32 32 32 32 16 16 16 16 16 16 16 16 16 16 16 That is how it was played on awake rhythmically. For the drums, look on my previous post. /---3---\ A ratamacue is notated like this: 32 32 16 16 16 8 I can see how you might mistake it, but I assure you it is a huerta.

    Paul

    >>> I believe your "huerta" is actually a Ratemacoue (ratt-em-a-cue) and it's called that because that's what it sounds like. I'm no drummer, but I was raised by one. I'm not even going to try to undertake the intro to 6:00, but I can play most of it, using RotoToms to simulate the octabans... I love the hi-hat work.

    Hello gang...

Does anyone know if the Phillips dual-tray or single tray cd recorder (model # CDR-765 , single tray #CDR-760 )can record from a cd-r to Cd-r ? I hear it has anti-serial copy management system to prevent this.... Also, They say you're supposed to use Consumer type digital audio discs (5 bucks each). I hear there's a way to trick the machine so it can use regular computer-type cd-r's(to record with), which would be much cheaper.... If anyone works at a place that sells these, or knows about this, I would REALLY appreciate some insight....

    Thanks Tom

Yes, Fire & Ice, your post came through the first time. I figure if this is the second time it's been posted, still completely unchallenged, and you still believe what you wrote here, and you're considering taking off because you don't have this stuff straight, then you need a real reply. Keep in mind as you read this that I don't "hate" any member of DT and will probably buy their next album without hearing a single note beforehand, nor do I hate you guys, assuming you are more than one person.

    > From: Fire & Ice, The Movie > > (1) Someone seems to be trying to start up the bitching about Derek > again which was unacceptable to start with and is still the same. We > were thinking of joining Korg at the time any way.

It's not "someone." It's "lots and lots of people." Derek made enemies, both publicly and privately. Saying he didn't means you're blind to reality, and pretending that any single person can be friends with everyone is an inhuman expectation. On top of that, not everyone's impressions of a single person are going to be the same. That person could do something and have it perceived as six different things by six different people.

The closest example I can think of to someone in a band who EVERYONE seems to really like is (...drumroll...) Mike Portnoy himself. I've met a total of three people in YtseHistory who've actually had a problem with Mike. You'll never see them post because they'd be outcasted immediately, and I doubt any of them are still on this list, but my point is that if you imagine everyone likes someone and no one dislikes them, then you probably haven't spoken to enough people.

No one's under any obligation to like Derek Sherinian or anyone else. I myself have been treated first as a buddy, second as a complete stranger, third as a valued fan of the band, and fourth as a nuisance by Derek Sherinian. While I understand there are times when he really just wants to get in his car after a show and hit a McDonald's drive-thru or something, lots of people probably waited months/years to meet the band before actually catching them after a show, and that one meeting happened to be the one time Derek just wanted to get the hell out of there and drive away.

The last time I saw DT, which was at Daytona's, Derek flew past us with, "I'll be back in five minutes!" after which he never came back. There was definitely someone there who went home thinking "Derek's an asshole, no question about it." Despite your good intentions, Fire & Ice, you will NEVER be able to convince those people that, deep down inside, Derek is an angel who's just misunderstood.

    > (2) Someone else seems to be trying to start some regarding John > Petrucci and his attitude to the fans after the LTE shows.

You might be referring to what I said, about Petrucci being his usual "tolerating" self after the show. Let's assume you ARE referring to me. Please refer to me directly in the future and cut it out with this "someone else" garbage. You didn't actually say what it is I'm trying to "start," but if you think I "hate" Petrucci because I described him as acting like himself, which in my opinion was no different than the last three times I've met him, you obviously haven't talked to he or I in person before. I was citing a pattern that few have disagreed with because for the most part it matches their own experiences. If I called Mike Portnoy "an antisocial recluse" people would probably wonder what I was smoking. In this case with Petrucci no one has said, "Bafu, you're an idiot! Petrucci is the liveliest, happiest monkey I've ever met! And he can JUGGLE!" At least, no one's said that YET.

If anyone agrees with me that Petrucci seems to tolerate more than appreciate, feel free to post about all the times Petrucci signed something or answered your questions without ever looking up at you. If a famous musician doesn't enjoy the signage or fan interaction he experiences after a show, then that interaction becomes like a DUTY, like something he feels HAS to be done instead of something he WANTS to be doing. People who notice this feel like speed-bumps in his path, myself included. I wouldn't say he "dislikes" the fans he talks to, it just seems kind of obvious that he'd rather be somewhere else. I don't take it as offensive, but I catch myself wondering why he bothers if he's not into it and doesn't get any real enjoyment or fulfillment from talking to people after a show.

You might all hate me for thinking this, but Petrucci is, in my opinion, more impersonable than John Myung. I'm not the sort who stands by and watches, I approach people and talk to them, I don't care if they're Steve Vai or John Petrucci or Tony MacAlpine. Petrucci has been for the most part unresponsive, and it's not because I'm so stinky and ugly, that's another story.

Petrucci is not under any obligation to talk to me, and I understand that. I still love to hear Petrucci play and will continue to ask him questions after shows. That doesn't mean I have to go "Petrucci is delightful to talk to, a real eloquent conversationalist, blah blah blah."

Don't ever get mad at "someone" for "starting something" about "someone else" if you've never dealt with either of those "someones" in person.

    > That is totally unacceptable.

Reality rarely worries about what you are willing to accept.

    > Perhaps he was just dog tired after all that playing?

Perhaps he's always been that way? Perhaps other people have noticed the same things I have and I'm not by myself with a horribly off-base perception?

    > Gigs affect different people in different ways (from experience). Also he > seems a little more shy than Mike Portnoy (animal of the muppets!!)

Yes, he seems more shy. But how dare you try to start something about Petrucci's attitude towards the fans. You're almost as bad as Bafu. > (4) The recent bitching about JLB was also unacceptable.

James LaBrie once demanded that I tell the entire Ytsejam that "they can keep right on amusing themselves" in regards to people being critical of his singing. He got about a foot away from my face and pointed as his chest, saying, "You come up here, SHOW me, you SHOW ME how to do this!" He was referring to the skeptics at large, but it was obvious to me that if anyone ever even ATTEMPTED to criticize James about ANYTHING, he'd get right back in their faces. If anyone needs to tell us what's unacceptable with regards to James LaBrie, it's James LaBrie. He can and will tell us when we're out of line, and if you think he needs a babysitter, the next time you see him you can tell him you're fighting the good fight and making darn sure no one dislikes his singing. Because that sort of thing just isn't allowed.

    > We are sure there are plenty of DT's actual fans on the list and we wish you > all the best and hope to see you on the suggested NEW LIST some time > soon, where we can all get away from the constant sniping of the bitche jam.

You go, Dagny! Say hi to Ragnar for me! :)

---- > From: Portnoy420@aol.com > Subject: Unsubscribing to the Jam > > (and *I* was the one who coined the phrase "bitche jam")

The coiner of the phrase "The Bitchy Jam," in reference to Mark "Itchy" Bredius posting several times per digest and complaining as he posted, shall never be known because no one was paying attention. But Mike, we'll go ahead and let you have "Bitche Jam" because you're such a nice guy. And because, well, yeah, I remember when you posted that. ;)

    > Shit...If I haven't unsubscribed yet...you'd be a pussy to...... > > Mike Portnoy

    hahahaha

"Shit... If I haven't stopped chugging this Jagermeister... (glug-glug-glug) You'd be a pussy to... Come on! Let's do some Jager shots!! We can mix it with Tang!!"
