    >Let's bring back that fantastic DT font, and its past time flavour! :) :)
    >Jokes apart, I agree with the possibility of a petition. Count me in.
    >Bye Jammers

Yeah, I like the old font better, but c'mon folks. let's NOT do a
petition. that's really a bad idea. The first two petitions were to
petition the record company to allow the band to record (first ACoS and
then FII) -- the band wanted to record, but the record company needed
prodding. This would be to force the will of the fans upon the band. If
the band wanted to keep the old font, they would have. This "petition"
would serve only to make the fans look dumb. I urge anyone with
self-respect not to sign such a thing, no matter what your opinion is of
    the new fonts.

    Solo Albums:
    >OK.... whats weird about this? A *SOLO* album with other musicians...
    >interesting wording.

Hm. Kinda like Joe Satirani, Steve Vai, Gary Hoey and all those guitar
folks have been doing for years? I don't see what's odd. Tori Amos --
hey, there's other musicians on her albums too. It's hardly a "new" thing.

Somebody get this fellow a copy of the OLD ACoS, without the 7-string.
Heck, I have 4 different versions of the pre-7 string ACoS. If you want to
hear it, lemme know and I'll slap one or three on a tape for ya.

No, the original ACOS was VERY different from the one on the EP, and
it was written originally on a 6 string guitar. All major 7 string stuff (like the
majority of The Crimson Surise) is basically new. I have an MP3 of a live
performance of this original ACOS that I downloaded from (I think) Bogie's
site (I dont have the URL handy, sorry). It starts totally different, and I think
the only segments that are just about the same musically, are Innocence, Carpe
Diem, The Darkest of Winters, Another World, and The Crimson Sunrise. Most
of the lyrics are different too.

    Hey gang,
A quick note, before I split for the airport to go to LA...

Don't hold your breath waiting for the return of the old DT font....
The main reason it was changed to begin with is that Storm Thorgerson does not
like to work with existing band fonts.
He likes to create something that ties in with the artwork he creates...

If you look at all his previous work (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc..), you'll
notice the band logo's are constantly changing.. (sometimes the band's name
won't even appear on his covers)

So as long as we continue to work with him (and I have no reason to see why
not..), you'll have to settle for new fonts each time out.....

    Hello All,

I think some of you are taking this far too seriously. Of course the font
is Dream Theater's choice and of course how they type their name will not
    ever effect how we feel.

My petition here is not as noble as the ACOS one. I freely admit that...
But AS YOU SHOULD KNOW from the very topic of the petition... a font... it
is also not remotely as serious. Have a sense of humor... I think the band
recieving this will get a kick out of it... I know they have a sense of
    humor...

I like the old font... I could care less if they change it... Take
something a little lighter then normal for a change...

yeah, i'm by no means in that class or anything but i also did that, cuz
whenever i played at high school all the beginners would be like "wow you're
awesome" and for a while i let it get to my head, then started setting
higher standards for myself. i think i can imagine why a good guitarist
would do the same. so it may be not only to make him keep practicing, but
also to keep himself from getting a big ego. i know i'd have to work to not
get a big ego if i was john p :) moo.

He must tell them that he has emphysema and attempt to cough up phlegm on
    them. What else...?

We might as make Mike dress in drag and mate with RuPaul as well. All we
have to do is get enough signatures on the petition and they'll HAVE to do
it. Petitions are more powerful than voodoo I tell ya. Anyone who wants to

Yeah, let's petition DT so they change their underwear to purple Calvin Klein, just like Michael Fox used in "Back to the Future"!

My point being? I think that running a petition to change a DETAIL as a font in cover of an album is too much, for heaven's sake! Petitioning for every little detail diminishes the value of the "petition" concept.

Ya just can't go back.... :) Actually I hope they don't revert to past album cover styles and fonts. I&W just looks so 80's (I know it wasn't done in the 80's - it just looks like it IMHO). I think the cover art and fonts should progress and move forward to reflect the music, I love the FII and OIAL covers, lets look forward! >>>>

Good call (from the second guy). I thought we were supposed to be PROgressive, not REgressive here. And why the hell would we want to start a petition? Petitions are for albums that everyone wants released but the fucking record company won't release it (ala ACoS). Petitions are not for fonts (the band probably likes the new one anyway), graphics, and the like. As far as I know, the band has creative control over their albums, and Strom's the way to go, IMHO. And if DT likes the font, were doomed to DEAL WITH IT (of course, I like it too....) And yes, I&W does look far too 80's for my personal taste - gotta love Mike in those sexy overalls... :)

Let us not forget Aldo Nova's (You know the song Fantasy...) first record which he did everything, music and vocals.

Why be nit picky anyway. I think generally a solo disc is when a member of an established band goes and does an album which he writes the majority of the material and gets guys who aren't that well known and his name is what sells the disc.

Then there are times when the solo artist does have a well known person in his band like Joe Satriani who at times has Stu Hamm. But who's name sells more records? Joe Satriani or Stu Hamm?

Welcome to the psycho-jam, ytse-circus, etc. I will not be posting a top ten list, thoughts on Derek vs Jordan.. I woke up when someone was posting much too much about the Myers-Briggs sorter. I think you've beaten that to death. Try the Keirsey Temperment Sorter next. Someone put the "test" online. Just a bunch of questions w/ explanations at the end. Can't think of the link. Oh, well. The Mysers-Briggs is online too. Psychology, good stuff. E-mail me. One thing I cringe at is how some say 50% are introverts. It's a scale. It's a spectrum. Many ppl really aren't complete introverts or extroverts. Just like few people are complete idiots. :) People act differently in different situations, and people perceive everything differently anyway. Someone (sorry, forget who) said they missed a show and J.P. said they sucked anyway. I read this as his way of not making you feel badly about missing the show. I could go on about the "Joquari (sp?) window" of a person (known self, hidden self, etc) but (who cares?) I just want to say I think it's great that the band is so accessible. They don't need a petition to decide what font to use in the future. If Mike decides to take a survey and personally collect the response... yeah whatever. I appreciate Dream Theater for the music, and look forward to the next album, even though it would be nice to hear Raise the Knife with vocals at some point in time. (I know I'm in the minority when I say lyrics and vocals really do matter - that's a whole other issue tho) I really don't want to think how different my life would be without Dream Theater. In closing, I like this list and can't imagine unsubscribing. Thanks. Have a good wknd! -Rachel

    > I just personally feel that if its called a SOLO ALBUM.. It should be > done by that person and that person alone. =) That's all...

But you see, there is a big difference between a band album and a solo album, even if the solo album features other musicians.

If Derek records an album with DT, he is part of a five-person team whose goal is to make a great album. Each member of that team contributes to the songwriting and arranging, and each member has an equal say in how the album is produced. It is a TEAM effort. (Well, I know not every band is like this, but I think most bands fit this mold at least to some extent.)

On the other hand, if Derek records a "solo" album, Derek will probably do most of the song-writing and arranging, and the songs will probably feature HIS playing more prominently than the playing of the other musicians. He may decide to let some of the other musicians help with the song-writing and arranging, but the bottom line is that DEREK, not the other musicians, has the final say on the arrangement, production, etc. because it is HIS album. (Or at least he should have the final say, though I'm sure the record company has some influence as well.)

Now in real life, I'm sure that these distinctions between band albums and solo albums sometimes get blurred, but I think that they probably apply very well to Derek doing an album with DT vs. Derek doing a solo album.

Of course there are some musicians who, as you mentioned, have released albums on which they personally wrote, arranged, and performed EVERYTHING on the CD. "Conversations with Myself" by Bill Evans comes to mind. However, this type of recording is much more rare than the standard "solo album" with additional musicians. Perhaps there should be a new term for this type of "true" solo album.

Mike's getting his copy of the CD sent out on Monday, so I don't think he has a problem with this.. :) Besides, MP3's of the Philly concert are already floating around.. And hey.. they are playing these songs to the public... People are hearing them.. If they didn't want them to be heard, they wouldn't play them... :-p

Sorry.. No one announced having a recording of the show to this list until after I did. (that I'm aware of at least) Anyway.. Take a listen to my recording.. It's pretty good. ( http://www.ageofvalor.com/~mike/lte/ ) There won't be much of a waiting list, I wouldn't think either if people are offering other recordings of the show. :)

    Later, Mike
