KorgX3, proud sponsor of the Norwegian Quadraplegic Gymnastic Team:
    >Anyone up for getting John Petrucci to become a conditioned professional
    >gymnast?

    He's back :). Crazy bastard...

    Concerning "personality testing":
    >One thing I cringe at is how some say 50% are
    >introverts. It's a scale. It's a spectrum.

And it's not something that can be determined by a bunch of ridiculous,
generalized questions - sorry to burst anyone's bubble. We all love to
categorize, but let's have some respect for the complexity of the brain.

    Concerning "solo albums":
    Paul Humm:
    >But you see, there is a big difference between a band album and a
    >solo album, even if the solo album features other musicians.

I agree completely. Although I must admit that I will purchase this album
more because of Garsed's presence than Derek's. Garsed has CHOPS! (Does
anyone have Centrifugal Funk on CD - features Shawn Lane, Brett Garsed,
Frank Gambale?) That said, it will still be very interesting to see what
Derek comes up with after his years with DT..

    And finally:
Thanks to Matt B.'s timely notice (about 4 hours before showtime!), I just
had the pleasure of witnessing STEVE. MORSE. tear up a stage with some of
the most amazing guitar playing I've even seen. I've seen Steve before but
this was the best performance of his I've ever seen.

The Steve Morse Band played at Palookaville in Santa Cruz, CA on Wednesday.
Material included a little Dregs stuff, plenty of new and old SMB stuff, and
a few excerpts of cover tunes while Steve played "follow along" with the
rest of the band in a classic rock medley that borrowed heavily from
    Zeppelin.

Especially cool was one of the new, unreleased (and untitled) SMB songs
which was the coolest guitar/bass duet I've ever heard. Very classical,
contrapuntal, with heavy use of Steve's classical harmonic technique (I LOVE
watching that!!). Dave LaRue is absolutely phenomenal on bass - definitely
one of my favorite bassists in terms of tone, style, and technique.
    Flawless live execution.

We got to meet Steve after the show, and he was absolutely kind,
soft-spoken, and a genuinely great individual. He even left a "voice"
autograph for Matt B., on tape right after that of MICHAEL. ANGELO. Steve
said he'll be releasing another album soon (no dates though) and I
absolutely can't wait. A class act and an unbelievable show. If you care
at all about music, check out the Steve Morse Band.

Thanks again to Matt B. for the timely information and to Nicole for keeping
me company on the drive :).

    -Neil.

personally, and this is not a flame I liked the older covers better than
the new ones...I even like the cover from "whendream and day unite better
than the cover for falling into infinity"

who did the cover for images and words, awake and change of seasons? was
    the same guy?

About Fates warning - I have to agree that Still Life is the place to start, even though it's live and most people want a studio album. In addition to "A Pleasant Shade Of Gray" being on there, it also has the 20+ minute "Ivory Gate Of Dreams" from No Exit, and also "Prelude To Ruin" from Guardian.

By the way, I like APSOG better on the live album too, even though my stupid sister criticizes the singing. But what does she know? It's not like LaBrie has never been criticized... and I think Ray Alder is just about the best singer around.

That M-Bone guy talked about seeing Johnathan Mover at the MP clinic. Though I love the work he has done with other artists, I was REALLY disappointed with Einstein. They opened for DT at Birch (and I think a couple of the other shows) during the Fix shows in 96 and I was rather unimpressed. Just my $0.02.

Mike said they were gonna keep working with Storm, Yay! Fonts, blah, let Storm do it, it will be cool :) Though I do like the older font alot, I think when you have someone like Storm doing your album covers, you let him do what he wants.

Petitions, yeah, I think enough people have beaten this one over the head already. I have to say that I think the only time something like this should happen is when it is something which needs to get done, not just trying to influence them to some people's will.

Well I have come out of lurk mode to offer up my .02 cents. I have been reading as of late, a lot of things about the attitude of musicians towards fans. Now I have met 4 legends in my time. I met John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, and Paco Delucia a couple years ago when they played in Austin TX on their Trio tour. I also met Joe Satriani last year in Houston when he played at the Ariel Theater. All of them were fantasic and super nice people. Paco even let me hold his fraggin' guitar! It doesnt get much cooler than that boys and girls. Part of the reason they were as nice as they were was how I approached them. I wasn't yelling and screaming like some rabid 12 year old girl at a Hanson concert. I merely walked up, smiled and said what I wanted to say when there wasn't that big of a crowd. I guess it all comes down to common sense and the Golden Rule. If you wouldn't like something done to you then don't do it to someone else!

I am sure most of you know this but obviously some don't. If you are cool then 95% of the time so will they. Of course there will always be "bad days." And if they are just plain assholes everytime. Then hit em where it hurts....album sales. If there are no fans there is no band.

You know, being an avid Storm fan, Ive never really noticed this, but it is true. Storm does not use the same band logos/fonts on different albums, in fact, I think Floyd have had 3 different logos for their post Waters albums. Also, I know that (at least) the majority of Storm's artwork is photo images alone with very few computer touch ups. I was wondering if the Roman Theater depecited on the cover of OiaL is painted on or was added with the use of a computer (if anyone doubts that you could paint so accurately on someone's head (or body), then check out the "back catalog" photo Storm did for Floyd, which has the album covers for Dark Side, Animals, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and Atom Heart Mother on the backs of a bunch of nekkid ladies.

Remember that interview that was posted at heavymetal.miningco.com? hehehe. And it was so looooong that it had to be split into two parts just to be posted here. John's answers were all prosaic in a way. Very wordy while still pretty explanatory. From what I hear is that he's afraid that his excellent communication abilities are capable of killing innocent bystanders, therefore he must stow them within and only apply them when battling the forces of evil. He has to register his tongue as a lethal weapon, don't y' know?

    >with all the members of the band. He and Marty Friedman sucks. They saw >us, and he didn't said "hi" (in lower case) but Ellefson and the new

hehehe. I dunno about Marty, he always seemed pretty cool to me. Mustaine's just an anal bastard. Maybe I just got on their good side or something. When I saw them (hell, I was grateful to at least be able to see them once) both Marty and Dave M. were really getting into it with the crowd. Hell, I was even able to get reactions out of them from the front row, however negative they might be. :) Hell, I can't help it Dave was making fun of my hair. Jeez. I vowed I'd never try to perm it again. hehehe. And Marty laughed at me after some damn crowdsurfer kicked me upside the head, too. They're evil, and we like 'em that way. :)

    >And another thing I wanted to coment about is about Derek... I wanted him >leave because I don't like him as a composer, even if he plays quite cool >he can make a cool new solo album. But he didn't fit in a band like DT.

Yah, skill alone doth not a DT member make. He's also gotta be straight. Shit, dammit, what did I just say? Awwww.... That's real salty. Oh, man, this guy ate alot of pork! So, what IS Rudy's sexual orientation? I'm surprised no one's asked this yet. hehehe. Doh! Bad thread! Bad thread! Down boy!

I must express my disgust with this idea. It's one thing to start a petition to push the delayed release of an album (i.e ACOS), but a petition to make DT change back to the old font - what a joke.

What are we doing here? It seems every step that DT try and make outside the realm they set for themselves with I&W and AWAKE, they cop it from the fans. Even with something as trivial as a style of type face. I do actually agree with you - I do muchly prefer the old DT font, throughout I&W, AWAKE and ACOS, I had always thought it rather groovy that DT had kept the same font - with the consistency nicely complimenting and contrasting the vast stylistic differences across all 3 albums.

But by petitioning for a return to the old font - what do you want to happen? Do you want DT to take that on board and drop any ideas they may have had for their new album and use the old font? Would that make you happy? And when they make another move that you don't like, will you petition them again, and again, until DT have conformed to your idealised image of them so you have a perfectly tailored band that won't give you any nasty surprises if they decided to [gasp!] *change*!

Considering this post (and many of the recent ones here) I feel as if I'm one of the only people who see their position as a 'fan' as one who listens to and enjoys DT's music for what it is, not as someone who has the right to whinge and complain and petition for changes if DT dabble in areas that *I* don't want them to.

If DT decide to change an aspect of their style, then so be it - if I like it, great! Add another gem to DT's currently awesome discog - if not, then too bad, maybe their next album will be better, and there's always plenty of other bands out there releasing quality albums left right and centre to choose from.

    Thankyou for listening,

    Luke.

Here's a quick review for a few CD's that I have recently picked up.

ELDRITCH - El Nino Superb third album from these Euro prog-metalers, crunchy, catchy and melodic easily their most mature and best effort to date. 9/10

THE GATHERING - How To Measure A Planet? My first Gathering CD, kind of a Pink Floyd meets Enya on acid, huge phycadelic sound. The LTD ED double cd comes complete with a 28 minute title track, that is a complete waste of space and time. The shorter songs, however, are all quite superb. 8.5/10

DC COOPER - DC Cooper Solo album from the Royal Hunt singer, more guitar based than RH, mostly great melodic hard rock, nothing really progressive. DC is joined by ex Conception guitarist Tore Ostby. Only a horrid cover of Uriah Heep's 'Easy Living' stops me from giving it full marks. 9/10

POWER OF OMENS - Eyes Of The Oracle Totally awesome progressive metal, I have no idea where these guys are from, but the is CD is brilliant, a la (old) Queensryche, Fates and DT. The singer is a Geoff Tate clone, but a good one :) 9.5/10

TEN - Spellbound UK's best hard rock band (prove me wrong :)), their heaviest album to date, with even a few progressive touches thrown in. As usual superb guitar from Vinnie Burns. 8/10

He didn't do the drums. He did all the writing, guitars, bass and keys. Good album BTW. Aldo was one of the better offerings in that time period. IMHO. "Subject" was also damn good. "Twitch" was OK. "Blood on the bricks" did nothing for me. (That was the first album he did with a full band) Big mistake.
