Hey all,
I just found out that Virgil Donati AND Brett Garsed will be playing on
Derek's solo album. As an Australian I found out about these two guys
before a lot of you probably did... but let me tell you, you're in for a
treat :) This is the perfect piece of news for me... I was disappointed at
first when I heard the news of Derek's departure, but on reflection, I can
now look forward to more new music than I would've before :)

Tubular Bells II, folks. It's like this, see? Anyone with an
appreciation for extraordinary musical prowess and fanfunkintastic
songwriting should buy themselves a copy of Tubular Bells II. It came
out in 1992, and is the brainchild of Mike Oldfield. On the record,
which is structured in parts(think apsog), Mr. Oldfields composes for,
and plays about 83,000 different instruments. I have seen a tape of this
guy in concert, and he has an orchestra, but whatever the lead
instrument is at the moment, he's most likely playing. Especially if
it's his favourite(i spell it like that he's a brit): "tubyaluh bells".
There is a Tubular Bells I , but it was released in 1937 or thereabouts.
I don't have it.

oh, and i passed up a disc by a band called "my dying bride" to grab the meshuggah disc, mostly because i couldn't remember if MDB was a band that has been favorably discussed on here, or unfavorably compared to the spice girls.....clarification would be nice
3) Historical note: heard a story today about a dude who used to work for the art department at A&M records....back in the late 70s, early 80s, the pay rate for an album cover, and remember this is back in the days of glorious 12X12 ART, used to be $5000 per cover! not bad! a guy could make a decent living, even today, with that kind of reinbursement
but, CDs were rising, swiftly, and as progress made mincemeat of the old ways, the corporate types found yet another way to slash costs and raise profits.......around 1983, 1984, the beginning of the changeover from drawing for the big covers to drawing for the 4X4 CD covers took place.....first step, at least at A&M records, slashing fees paid for cover art from $5000 per cover to a mere $1500 per artwork! 70% pay cut at one shot! the whole art staff apparently quit, to be replaced by new kids out of college
so if you have waaaaaaay too much free time on your hands, AND a large album collection from the mid-80s, take a look, and tell me whether album art quality changed much around 1983 or 1984
5) sad note: i was forced to miss the Motor City Prog Show tonight.....Tiles, Discipline and House of Usher, all on one stage, and me, elsewhere.........LIFE AIN'T FAIR sometimes, and dammit, don't tell me nothin' bout no damn lemonade :-(
6) sleepless note: it is futile to put on Finneus Gauge "One inch of the fall" and attempt to fall asleep.....at least until that, um, rendition of piano man comes on, at which point you can't escape fast enough.....god i hope that was deliberately done in the way it was done!

Strike two. Look, when Robert Plant (from Led Zep, if you don't know) put out his first few solo albums, they featured contributions from friends of his but he wrote the majority of the stuff that was on the albums, if not all of it. He was in complete control of what happened with his music. In a full band, that's not always the case. I guess someone could make a "one man band" album (Trent Reznor), but just b/c someone is a singer doesn't mean they can play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or anything else worth a crap. That is a rather idiotic statement you made.

I just got back from the LTE NAMM show and all I can say is FUCK YEAH. I brought along the camcorder and got EXCELLENT VIDEO AND AUDIO of the whole show. Extreme closeups on Tony, Jordan, and John's hands as they play their solo passages. I am so psyched to have this on video tape !!!!!
f anyone is interested in trading, let me know. I absolutely will not SELL this video tape. I feel lucky enough to have it and would feel strange profiting by it. I am interested in trading for more than just DT material (although that gets priority).

Someone asked for Faith No More recommendations, so here is my quick run down on their studio efforts............
You mentioned having Introduce Yourself and The REal Thing. There is one album before these two called 'We Care A Lot'; not really a fave amongst most FNM fans, especially as it has the same singer as IY, Chuck Mosely, it DOES have some good songs on it, but really, if you don't have the rest of their CDs, don't bother with this........ Next in line after TRT was 1992' 'Angel Dust'. Superb. IMHO, lacks a wee bit in the guitar department, but the atmospherics attained on this CD were never really matched again by this band, or any other band for that matter. Superb song-craft, vocals to kill for, this CD is generally FNM fans' favourite (this is a GENERALISATION, people, so PLEASE don't write in saying "oh, gee, I'm a Faith No more fan, and this isn't my favourite FNM album...........") 1995 saw the release of 'King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime'. A distinct lack of keyboards, a change of guitarist, and a small case of personality crisis makes this album one that has its highs and lows........... the last four songs are, imho, amongst the band's best material, but some of the other work leaves a little to be desired. Quite rocky and aggressive, compared to moodiness of Angel Dust. Then, 1997 saw the release of 'Album of the Year'. Saw the band attempt to mantain their KFAD level of aggression, coupled with a more atmospheric approach, ala Angel Dust. Quite successful, and certainly a fine album, although the 2nd half of the CD doesn't quite match the first half.... This certainly has some of their finest material. If you're looking for that "funk metal" (gotta hate that terminology) sound of The Real Thing, then just listen to that over and over, coz you'll just be disappointed with the band's subsequent efforts. If you see the glimmers of sublime chaos that lurks beneath the surface of The Real Thing that was consequently unleashed with their following efforts, then by all means, explore further. The vocals on TRT compared to the three later releases are markedly different. Mike Patton certainly showed himself to be a vocalist of immense talent and ability (and adaptability) on the three post-TRT albums. Quite astonishing, and it's probably the most notable aspect of Faith No More's music. My advice to you, therefore, is actually to buy the band's 1998 posthumous Greatest Hits collection entitled 'Who Cares A Lot?', and sample all the band's albums (with the exception of the 'We Care A Lot' CD............ And here endeth my not-as-short-as-originally-intended rundown of Faith No More. Hope this helps.

Hi all
an early candidate for album of the year has landed in my CD player. The new album by Cathedral called "Caravan Beyond Redemption" is simply a masterpiece. I'm still tyring to find words that will do justice to this latest offering by Lee Dorian and co., so you will have to wait a day or so before I post my review - but I can tell you now that it will be a 10/10. Other good news from the Cathedral front is that they will be touring Europe together with Orange Goblin - an evening of stoner rock and doom in perfection. See you in Frankfurt on the 1st of March.
Solo albums. If my fading memory serves me right, a lot of the stuff that Vangelis has done was strictly "solo", as were the first two albums by Mike Oldfield, "Tubular Bells" and "Hergest Ridge". My favourite solo album - "Fish Out Of Water" by Chris Squire.
What's a font? And who said that the letters C and K can be interchanged in some languages? What the fukc.
Urban legend time. I have heard that some music stores have notices on the wall, threatening anybody who checks out a guitar by playing "Stairway To Heaven" with instant eviction. Being about as musical as the sound of goose farts on a foggy morning (copyright Leo Kotke), I have never seen a music store from the inside, so could anybody confirm this for me?

I wonder if you can help me. I've found a website under the name of Scarred Records which sells "high quality" Rush and DT bootlegs. I'd love to place an order with them but I'm a little cautious about their policy of accepting cash only with orders. I know that there are perfectly valid reasons for it but I'm not in the habit of sending cash to people I don't know. Therefore, can anyone tell me of their experiences (good or bad) of dealing with either Scarred Records or Ryan Whitaker. No slander or insult intended, I'm merely looking for piece of mind. I hope its good news because the stuff they are selling looks great. Comments on the quality would also be appreciated.

Just a few comments about the cover artwork and logos:
I also liked the consistency they had with the I&W style logo, it already became sort of a trade mark, but now try to imagine it on their latest covers. It wouldn't work! Actually it's amazing how *perfectly* the DT-logos fit on the FII and OIAL covers! On the other hand, if you let them stand for themselves, they look... crappy. When I was working on the artwork of the latest Xmas-CD I found it pretty difficult to come up with a decent design that would match the style of the logo. Anyway, on Storm Thorgerson's covers the logos look excellent. Maybe he's just better than me ;-).
I really don't want them to return to the I&W logo, but I really want them to keep the Majesty symbol forever!
Talking about the covers themselves: Personally I like the Awake cover best. It's dark, it fits the music perfectly, and it has all those more or less obvious references to the lyrics, the mirror, the '6 o'clock', the web, etc. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was somehow unsatisfied with Storm Thorgerson's DT-covers. Technically great, but I guess I really missed the lyrics references, all the details. It's not a problem with Storm's covers being too surreal. DT's covers always had this surreal touch, even the WDADU cover. I mean, why is this guy getting brandmarked? DT slave forever? What's this for a strange room without a roof on I&W? Who dropped this huge mirror in the sand? But nothing irritated me as much as those guys on the FII cover. What the *heck* are they doing there? I guess it only irritated me because there was nothing in the lyrics about two guys looking at each other while sitting somewhere in the Pacific sea or something. I understood why the sparrow was falling, but I didn't understand these guys, and maybe it left the embarrassing feeling that I'm just too stupid to understand. But maybe it was just because it was too straight and I missed the feeling that I could discover something new every time I look at it...

Who's gonna be the first?? I love to write and would love to make it a proffession, but I guess my ability to write in the English language is still not developed enough. I could write in German? Anyone think about how hard it must be for these people to have their creative work criticized, glorified, put down, etc, and then have to deal with thousands of fans whose faces they dont recognize (although past experience shows that Portnoy can actually remember a face).. Every night to have people crowding around treating him like a god, suffocating him.. can you blame JP for wanting to get to his car quickly and leave? I dont think JP doesnt like fans .. but it is hard for a musician to deal with thousands of adolizers. I will say theat he does have interesting crowd interaction when performing. I remember DT/ELP/DP when me and a couple other DT fans way in the back were cheering on JP's guitar work and he looked at us, smiled and played for us whuile cheering US on. pretty cool. I think one of Portnoy's gifts is his ability to interact with people, which I find simply amazing, but it is a rare gift and most people do not have it.
And to close my inane drivel (I am running a fever so I am not thinking straight), I will quote a relevant RUSH lyric:
