Time for my statutory one message per quarter or so... :)

Just wanted to toss in a plug for Ozric Tentacles. Long-timers and
#ytsejammers and list veterans all know I've liked them for years, but
I've now finally seen them play live. Met them. Not-quite smoked a
bowl with them. Hung out with them on their tour-bus.

Their two-hour, ten-minute set here in Atlanta last Tuesday was one of
the five best live gigs I've ever seen. Astonishing tightness and
precision for a bunch of guys who, well.....were suitably chemicalized
already. :) No setlists on that stage, they just played. Or in
one case, jumped and danced around and played flute. heh

The new CD is really good, too -- it's called WATERFALL CITIES and I'm
horribly biased since, astonishingly, they thanked me in the liner
notes, but it really -is- good. If they're coming near you soon
(Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Louis (small chance I might drive/fly up
there for that show), Boulder CO, and several shows in Calif), go see
'em if you can. And be prepared to groove.

DT content: Mike Portnoy likes 'em. :)
NonDT content: Gregoor from Lemur Voice loves 'em. :)

*yawn* just got up... I was at a Mike Oldfield concert last night. Oh man... *huge grin*. The concert was in Udine (Italy) and that`s about 190 kilometers from my city. First of all, it was the best damn concert i`ve ever been to... absolutely fucking amazing! The only thing that dissapointed me was that there were no damn t-shirts to buy... damn it! And they`ve been touring for about a month now and they had t-shirts selling at every damn concert. Anyhow, i ended up buying a poster... not bad... The god things: i saw two guys wearing Dream Theater t-shirt (one had the Awake one, and the other that old Majesty t-shirt with that Majesty sign on the front), and I was the 3rd guy with a DT t-shirt. And at the end of the concert, when we were getting in the car some guy was walking down the street and noticed my shirt and shouted "Dream Theater" while having this huge grin on his face... that was cool! I don`t know how many of you listen to Mike... but if you get a chance to see him... i say go for it. He has 5 more people in the bend beside him. Claire - plays keyboards and guitar, Carrie - she plays stick and bass, then the other guy who plays keyboards and guitar (forgot his name), the drummer(forgot his name also) and Pepsi - that woman has amazing vocals... beautiful. Mike himself played guitar of course (he had 2 Paul Reed Smiths, one Stratocaster and an acoustic classical nylon-string guitar) tubular bells!!! and some keyboards here and there and glockenspiel (or whatever it`s spelled). You should see how they exchange their instruments during song... Mike changed guitars during songs. The only 3 songs that he played with only one guitar was Moonlight Shadow, Shadow on the wall and Family Man. Oh yea, he played that big Zildijan cymbal... like the one that Roger Waters played in Live at Pompeii... The beggining was fabolous... the musicians went out on the stage and started with "In the beggining" and after a minute or two the light went out for a few seconds and when they turned them up again... Mike was there standing and smiling at people. Then he started with banging the cymbal and even doing some vocals along with Pepsi... and after the intro they just continued with "let there be light". They played a nice short version of Ommadawn, 4 tracks off of "Guitars", 7 tracks off of Tubular Bells ||| mixed with Tubular bells I... they came back for 2 encores. The end was great... They played "Secrets" and "Far above the clouds". I`m still in shock! so... i`m now waiting for an Iron Maiden show at 23rd September in Milano. That will be great!

p.s. Cyberduke!!! I`m gonna see Vlatko Stefanovski with Gibboni at next Friday and then Vlatko with his trio on Biker days festival on 31st July again... yea!

Umm, how come? :( Does it mean the album is full of not whole songs? :( That sux!

    > of uninterruped live (and he means live, as in absolutely no > overdubs whatsoever) music.

He never miss to pinpoint that! :) But he has right, given the music they play, it's really unbelievable that all that is played live on stage! There's great text concerning this on "The best band you never heard in your life" cover. Here it goes:

"In a world where most of the "big groups" go on stage and pretend to sing and play, we proudly present the quaint little audio artifact. Yes, once upon a time, live musicians actually sang and played this. All material contained herein is 100% live, and there are no over-dubs of any kind"

Doesn't it make you check that album? :) And yet after you hear it you can't believe these words? ;)

    > > P.S. Zappa is the most inventive musician I ever heard! And I > > heard a lot! ;o) > > Inventive? Yes. Twisted? Absolutely.

Too twisted! As someone said, "Thin is the line between a genious and an idiot" :)

    > And without a doubt, probably the most original as well.

    Amen to that!

It was first around 20 minutes, than got to 25! Later was said that now since Jordan is on-board, they'll do it again, re-arrange/compose it with him. And maybe they messed with it so good, that it went into 60 minutes song and voila - the new album! :) BUT, they just decided not to call it Met. 2 so they say Met 2 will not be on the album! :)

To fill in the 15 minutes for the obligatory 75 minutes album, they'll include a studio covers jam of Egyptian Danza (DiMeola), Peaches en Regalia (FZ), You Fool no one (DP) and I am the Walrus (Beatles) :)

For the most part they're complete. I just meant that there's no in-between-song stage banter, and no fadeouts/ins between songs; which is important to consider when the recordings date from anywhere between 1968-1988, and there are often abrupt changes in sound/recording quality with a not-always-smooth transition between them.

Start with Vols. 1 & 2, and work your way from there.

in response to the jammer complaining about Mike Portnoy stealing Neil Peart's 7/4 hi-hat groove, it's not necessarrily "stealing", so much as "quoting". If Mike Portnoy has proven anything over the years, it's that he's EXTREMELY creative, and really has no reason to steal licks. He probably just realized that the Peart lick would fit, and decided to throw it in for fun. (i remember how happy i was when i realized the melody of phish's "Tweezer" would work as a bass line to a song my freind wrote!) Yesterday I saw "Divided" in an Dutch import cd shop. It was at PLATO in Leiden. PLATO is a chain of import shops in the Netherlands. So "Divided" can be bought at more than one shop in the Netherlands. Its price was 39.99 DFL.

Hiya folks, I just wanted to let you know that I've installed a new Live Chat room on Mike's site today, and it can be accessed from BOTH the WEB PAGE or from an IRC CLIENT :-)

I hope you find the option to choose JAVA or IRC useful :)

We still do not have a scheduled Live chat appearance for Mike, as he and I are working to finish the other areas of the site right now. As soon as the dust settles I will try to schedule a date for him to appear, and it will be announced on his site in the Current News and Forum areas.

Also, there are new videos in the Pics/Sounds section (from the studio recently) as of today! (if you tried accessing them earlier but could not, the links were not correct at first, but they have been fixed!)
