I was replying with equal strength to his e-mail, you say I judged him from
line one, he judged most of the list in the subject line. You're acting
    biased here.

    > Oh stop you're whining. You give what you get. Call me the mirror, my
    > friend.

How can I call you a mirror, when you don't seem to be reflective.

    > I didn't assume you're a dick. Please point out where I said you're a
    > dick. You just needed to be spanked a little :)

You didn't have to say it outright, the message was clear.

    > "An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with
    > his fools." - Ernest Hemingway

Heh, nice, you bastard, your gonna have my friends learning that off by
heart and reciting it to me :)

    > How's it feel? Hmmm, think I'll go ask Jeremy :)

As I said before, in his subject line.

    > *Seems* that way, doesn't it?

He could have toned his original e-mail down, I maybe would have agreed with
a less insulting approach, that's why I replied with an equally strong
    e-amil.

    > Bummer. This place used to be more like a community, or family, where
    > people actually took the time to notice someone's name. Is this the new
    > world order I've heard so much about?

You're criticizing me like I just joined this list, I've been on it for
three years, you may hve known me as Elydian before, just look in that
backlog. Anyway, you're avoiding the point of the sentence you criticize.

    > <saluting> Yes sir :)

    Good.

    > I think naturally in terms of comedy. You provide fodder :)

Well believe it or not, if you knew me, I do exactly the same. I am as
passionate about my comedy as I am with my argument.

    > But it appeared that Jeremy's side pissed you off. Or did I misintepret
    > your words?

He provided such a one sided approach, all I was doing was providing the
other side, to balance it out. There you have it, both sides. It's at the
root of all arguments, if someone comes in with a one-sided approach,
someone else is bound to balance it with the other.

    > It's called showing someone the other side. So I guess it's ok to expect
    > others to see all sides openly when it suits you; but when you're the
    > object of that expectation, it's off-limits.

No, not at all, as I said, balance.

    > If you come in with an attitude and then can't be bothered when, at this

    > wonder. To use the phrase "pisses me off" in the FIRST reply to an
    > e-mail is strong enough to warrant being called on it. You don't like
    > it, too fucking bad :)

The point is, I've tried to make people aware of both sides all of my life,
but they've thrown it back at me, just like you, and it gets to a point
that's like, why the fuck should I spend my life explaining everything to
people, when they don't even want the truth? It wastes my time, I can no
    longer be bothered.

Eh, getting angry isn't even worth it. If it bothers you so much that you can't just ignore it...Something like "Hey, I already bought my way into Heaven! I'm at the right hand of Jesus and all it cost me was my firstborn!" usually works pretty well.

    :D

On a more serious note...I've always wondered...

Just because *you* (not Amanda particularly...you know who you all are) have a hangup about Christianity and some atrocities that have been done in its name doesn't mean every Christian is evil or stupid. This is the same argument that we hear from people like the Minister Farrakhan who holds every white person alive today responsible for slavery. My ancestors held no slaves, and my ancestors didn't participate in the Spanish inquisition or the Holocaust, and even if they did, that's them, not me. So what the fuck is your point? is all I have to say to people who use that kind of reasoning.

    On a related note...

People will go on and on about how we should be open-minded and judge people for who they are, not what race, creed, or religion, but if that religion for someone out there happens to be Christianity, as soon as people find out you're going to have some closed-minded hypocrites ready to bite your head off before they even meet you.

Here's a dirty little secret in late 20th century america...it's chic, especially among young self-styled intellectuals, to attack Christians. It's very post-modern, rebellious, and cool. It's very UNcool on the other hand to ridicule, for example, Moslems, because that wouldn't be very multi-ethnically aware, would it? Not showing much respect for diversity if you do that, even though Moslems, and pretty much every other major religion except Buddhists, have plenty of blood on their hands (and even Buddhists aren't squeaky clean). Hindus do plenty of killing and have for years; read about the various conflicts on the Indian subcontinent. Christians, we all know about the kind of crazy shit they've pulled. Jews used to like slaughtering all the pagans they could get their hands on, until the shoe ended up on the other foot; they haven't choked any rivers with the dead in the last thousand years simply because they haven't had the manpower for it. :P

I didn't want to get into this at all, but I just felt this needed to be said. Of course, it's pointless; it won't change anything. Those of you who agree with me will continue to, and the kind of people I'm talking about will just ridicule me in their infinite wisdom and open-mindedness. So be it. But it needed to be said.

    >Gary Cleghorn at some point said something like: > >The new DT album will be a concept album. you'll see.... > >I hope not, we have already had ACOS > >Lets have a prog heavy cd with excellent vocal melody.

A Change of Seasons is not a concept album. It's an EP. It features one very long song and some live tracks. The album is almost similar to 2112 by Rush in that it features one long track which shares the same name as the album's title.

And who's to say that a concept album by Dream Theater wouldn't be very progressive and/or have great melodies?

I think DT would do very well in writing a concept album, at least from a musical standpoint, since they've shown the thematic element before in Images & Words (Pull Me Under riff in PMU & TTT, Wait For Sleep riff in WFS & LTL) and Awake (Erotomania (all of it), Space Dye Vest riff in The Mirror & SDV, The Mirror riff within Lie, etc.) They would just have to concentrate a little more tying an entire album of themes together, which probably wouldn't be hard for them.

If the music was even that loosely tied and yet all the tracks could stand on their own as great songs (like Queensryche's Operation: mindcrime), then we'd have one killer concept album...musically speaking

Of course, I'd be a bit wary about the lyrical content...I haven't seen too many concept albums accomplish much in this department besides The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia, Queensryche's Operation: mindcrime, and Pink Floyd's The Wall. Then again, I don't think Portnoy, Petrucci, and LaBrie could even compare to Townshend, Tate & DeGarmo, and Waters.

YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!!!! I have every single DT commercially released CD. The song that is on ACOS is "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" by Elton John. YEs, that song is on the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, but there is a song by the same name as that album that DT has performed live on a few occasions. I wouldnt ask for a commercially released mp3 of the other elton john cover done by DT. I was simply looking for a rare release..........think next time you flame....

Hmmm.....? :) Too much time on our hands? I can't think of any better way to spend my time than having an intellectual discussion. I though that's what my Nostradamus post might stir. I guess I should have known better than to philosophize here. :) As far as the gay/religion threads go, I've taken them to private mail. I've had an interesting theological conversation with Brandon Jessee, and, even though we can't settle our differences (I wouldn't expect us to), it does give you a little insight into the other person. Even though we really don't agree on anything, we both like DT and that's good enough for me! :)

23 minutes is *not* a concept album. It's half of an LP, and only a bit of a CD these days.

Thank God concept album and prog-heavy w/ excellent vocal melody aren't mutually exclusive terms.

Anybody know how many albums DT has left on their contract? Going out with a bang? (just pure, white, granulated speculation -- take a snort)

    Hey guys,

I'd hate to play Skadz around here, but someone in their right mind has to lay the smack down. And, considering I'm good friends with Skadz and see eye to eye with him, I feel I can speak for him...

So, ANYONE who contributes in ANY way to threads concerning the following:

    - Christianity / religion - homosexuality / sexual lifestyles - "I'm pissed - fuck you flamers, I'm flaming you back! I want my jam back!"

I will write your names down and send them on to Skadz upon his return from Ireland so that he doesn't have to wade through 2 weeks worth of bullshit emails on the 'jam. If your name happens to be on this list, be prepared to receive a warning from Skadz - maybe even a boot from the 'jam.

    YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

To quote Skadz from a recent post:

"Everyone - this is NOT the place to flame people. If you wanna flame someone, keep it in private email, don't put it here. Keep the conversation to music and related stuff. As I have said about 8 billion times in the past, think before you post. Juneville bullshit will not be put up with here."

So, consider this the 8 billion-th and 1 time that you've been told.

PS - If you seriously have a problem with what I'm doing, email me in private. However, I will immediately delete any email which was not well thought out before it was sent.

As much as I want to believe that you think you're doing right by saying that homosexuality is wrong and God doesn't like it...

Don't you think that God had any idea that something like this could happen? As science proves it, there IS a gene for homosexuality (although I haven't read any of the studies myself), which means that somehow, and for some reason, it was in God's plan, as all my religious friends would say. In addition, was Jesus's greatest commandment not: Love God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul, and love your neighbor as you would yourself? Seems to me that we're supposed to "forgive" (sorry, it's the only word I can think of in this situation) all the "wrongs" that people commit, which in your case would be homosexuality? In a world where we are supposed to be taught that God is all-forgiving (and I was born and raised Catholic, I've been through all the catechism and church schooling), why would we really believe that he couldn't forgive something that is natural (refer back to my earlier comment about genes).

On a related note: If in Scripture it said that Jesus was going to be killed by his own people, how could the Jews be considered wrong when God knew that it was going to happen the way it did?

Or how about this: I've heard AIDS referred to as a punishment for gays and for fornicators by God. If we are supposed to get punished at Judgment Day, why would God punish us on Earth as well? Wouldn't it be kinda redundant to screw you twice, once during life and once after death?

These aren't challenging questions, just little things that I've stored up in my years studying religion.

After listening to Queensryche's version of "Scarrburough Fair", from Music in Progress, i must say "Hell yeah guys.." glad someone besides me, and talented. like S&G.. I would love to hear DT do a rendition of "Sound of Silence".. Speaking of S&G i hope anyone who saw "American Pie" (which btw didn't even have the song in it!) caught the "Graduate" scene with the nerdy boy, in the tux, screw his friends mom on the pool table while "Mrs. Robinson" played in the background! I love it when someone incorporates great masterpieces, very tastefully, into their production.. I would love to see DT put out another Bside album.. with more PF, S&G, Yes, Rush.. and maybe some 80's stuff.. like older Metallica, Queensryche, Helloween, Genesis (Land of Confusion!), Type O' Negative (they could put a happy twist to TON's song.. maybe Christian Woman, or Red Water), Savatage (Prelude to Madness w/ Hall of the Mountain King), or Jethro Tull. I would love to hear JR play some Rachmoninoff or Chopin..

    Any other suggestions?? comments??

On a side note.. i am trying to DL the full MP solo at www.mikeportnoy.com and am having problems.. it gets to about 8 or 11 meg and just stops. Anyone else have this problem? I don't think it's my internet connection.. cause i never get a message that the download was uncompleted .. and my connection is still up.. Is the whole thing Zipped? Just curious.
