The ultimate DT concept album would have to include Kevin on keys. His
lryical mastery is perfect for such a project. Operation: Mindcrime is
brillant because of its story and lyrics, not so much the kick ass music.
It is timeless because the story never gets old. Besides, DT already did
    a concept album -- it's called Awake.

I'm glad Korg finally told us how he employs the internet. Now we can
accept him for who he really is. :)

Somehow I've managed to inquiriatate. I apologize to the jam for that. It
seems to be a bad habit of mine. I'll try not to let it happen in the
future. And, Jon, my comment was general, not addressed to anyone in
particular. And was, I thought, obviously tongue in cheek. Just because I
put my two comments together, it meant not that it was adressed to you.
Stream-of-consciousness is a large part of my writing style.

    Hey,

I too am wondering where the "They've already re-written MET2 with
JR" thing has come from. If they have - it will be on the CD, no point in
wasting time on it otherwise. My big question, and not wanting to burst the
"Concept Album" bubble, is - how do you write a concept album at the same
time as recording it. Surely they must have already had the concept comming
together long before entering the studio with it, but there was no inkling
of that from Mr Portnoy. Also, JR hasn't been in the team long enough. I
can't see the DT guys saying "Hey JR, welcome to DT, we've already got a
    concept for the new CD".

The other problem with a concept album, is the lack of commercial
viability. FII was a real "Radio Airplay" cd, maybe with JR joining and the
success of LTE they may be leaning more heavily on their progressive side
(and nothing would make me more happy), but this is not a Magna Carta
release, this is an East West release and we all know that the DT boys want
to be more successful and more popular. Of coarse this could be their last
"contractualy agreed" CD with EW, which could turn into a "Look at the size
of our concept album, now fuck you 'cause we're off to Magna Carta, oh and
by the way, thanks for not promoting us properly". That would be pretty
    funny.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. We could all just slag
DT99 off, saying that it must be shit, that's why there's been no news. We
could really pick holes in Mike's drumming and, eventually, just maybe, MP
will crack and tell us all about it in one massive flame.....it's a long
    shot....but it just....might....work....

Lack of space; it not fitting in with the rest of the album's concept/
theme/tone; they don't wanna; they write something even sicker
and decide to use that instead...

Or - try this one on for size - since the song was already over 30
mins long, they stretch it out, add sone new pieces, rename all the
different parts, and it *becomes* the new album, just under a
    different name (perhaps). Who knows?

    - Could someone point me to the tour dates for The Gathering? I like
what I've heard broadcast on ytseradio. From what people are saying, the
group is pretty tight live. Sounds like it'd be worth checking out.

    - I was flipping through the channels the other night, and there's some
new show on, Buffy and My Lucky Charm, or The Charming, or Charmed or
something. I heard the intro. It's a tune from the early/mid 80's by The
Smiths right? Or one of those bands *I* first think of when someone says
    the word 'alternative'.

That's another thing. I hope they refrain from playing any of the new
material live until after the album comes out. It creates an
uncomfortable conflict when they play a show (which I want to go
to) with material I don't want to hear (yet).

    Wow.
Haven't posted in a while, and man, things are nuts hee. I simply can
not believe the balls of STEEL that some of you have. Do you respect DT?
Why would you then offer any suggestion about how their new album should be?
Maybe Portnoy is really a strange guy and doesn't take that kind of thread
as an insult, but I just think that's incredibly disrespectful. Let them
write their album. Let them keep it a secret! They're doing all that for
YOU, not to "make you crazy" and not because they're afraid of anything. I
don't know anyone in the bad, but I am SURE that as a musician, each member
of the band wants nothing more than to put together what he feels is the
best possible album, and give it to you for your enjoyment. Don't pretend
that you should have any input in that process.
Bearing that in mind, I don't see one good argument as to why this new
album couldn't be written around Metropolis 2, or couldn't be a giant
expanded Metropolis 2. "It's only 23 minutes of music... so it can't be"
doesn't mean anything, nor does "I don't think they'd do that"
Unless Portnoy comes in and tells everyone what the album will be, let's
just wait and see what happens rather than debate something this inane.

Well I really don't think this album will be a concept
album. The only reason why I don't think that it will is
because of the coment that James makes on the 5th mpeg clip
on Mikes site. He said that he hadn't started to record at
that point and in the next few weeks they would begin to
write the lyrics. Now maybe it's just me, but one would
think that if it were to be a concept album the lyrics
might have been written and rewritten by this point. I
think lyrics usually have a strong influence along with the
music in a concept album so by them not even having started
on them.... well I don't know where I am really going with
this. Just something to think about. Honestly I would
like them to do what Spocks Beard did with Day For Night
and that is put the epic (MET2) at the end of the album.
When I listen to D4N all the way through that last piece
    brings closure to the cd.

    later all

I really don't think this will happen. Mr. (Master?) P said himself that he
didn't want to do one big hour-long conceptual song, because it has already
been done by Fates Warning. I'm hoping for a concept album, which may or
may not INCLUDE Metropolis II, but I seriously doubt Met2 will encompass the
entire album. I could be PERFECTLY happy with another kick-ass conventional
DT record. I REALLY think Met2 will be released as an EP, if at all....

    <<<<
On the subject of the new album, I think it will be a concept album entitled

Metropolis II (w/possible sub-title). However, there will be no track
entitled M2. There will be 10 tracks, but the idea will be the same as a
Pleasant Shade of Gray. The entire album is one conceptual song, Metropolis
II. But then again, APSoG wasn't in the "inspiration corner." while i hope
its a concept album entitled metropolis 2, and i hope the theories are right

because it would be great...but it *will* be a letdown. the secrecy is why
    im
anticipating this so much. if it comes out and i pick it up and find out
    that
everyone guessed right, it'd be like..."oh...i saw that coming. no
    surprise."
i dont care what it is, at least i know itll be good.

    Hey Jam...

This is in response to what Ptacek wrote....

I think that ppl discuss this next album because:
    1. Portnoy has been VERY tight lipped about it.
    2. We have no idea what the next album is gonna be like.

These two things help build alot of anticipation.. and in my opinion
this will probably drive ppl crazy until they go out and buy it and
    listen to it.

I'd have to say that keeping a lid on the info for this next album is
    the best thing
    DT has done!

btw... this conversation is the best thread, I've seen all year.

Yeah...I know. You're probably right, but I'd like a concept album
nonetheless. I just found it interesting that "Inspiration Corner"
featured a heck of a lot of concept albums.

So, I guess, for me, it's just wishful thinking. Who knows, maybe
they had a lot of themes they wanted to tackle in their lyric
writing? Maybe all those ideas were there, but they brought
them out in the studio. We'll see. It's just too bad we'll have to

    >< I really don't think this will happen. Mr. (Master?) P said himself
that he didn't want to do one big hour-long conceptual song, because it has
already been done by Fates Warning. I'm hoping for a concept album, which
may or may not INCLUDE Metropolis II, but I seriously doubt Met2 will
encompass the entire album. I could be PERFECTLY happy with another
    kick-ass
conventional DT record. I REALLY think Met2 will be released as an EP, if
    at
    all.... ><

Ah, but they also said that they will not release another EP.
