Ok....
I have to jump in on all of the speculation.
I agree that it is quite possible that the new DT will be a concept
album. However, if that's the case, I don't believe that Met. 2 will
be included. I just don't see them expanding that into a whole album.
How about this....
A new album...concept or not. Followed by the release of Met. 2 a year
later as an ep. This would include the "newer/definitive" version
of the song as well as the older Derek version, along with clips/pieces
of music/ideas that were recorded throughout the development of the song
(like much of the material which can be found on the bonus CDs of the
Marillion remasters).
I'm not trying to be greedy here (I'll be happy with whatever they choose
to release :) I just think this would be really cool.
Thoughts?.....

I was very fortunate to see the GATHERING twice. In Ventura
and in Hollywood. I must say, that everyone should go and
check them out. Ticket prices are pretty cheap. Go and support
underground bands dammit. Anyways, they kick a lot of ass.
Especially the singer Annekke(sp?), who had everyone in a
trance. She is really awesome and looks so happy rocking out
to their stuff. That women is a goddess.
I expected to get bored, but I wasn't because I was completely
fascinated. Anyways, I wish their last album was heavier, but
oh well. Go see them dammit!!!
You know underground metal is getting bigger when the GATHERING
is touring the US. NExt week, EMPEROR and BORKNAGAR are playing
in California. A good sign for all metalheads. Then MAIDEN!!!
portnoy: I think the new DT album needs to be really heavy with
classical influences. Cut out the pink floyd and jazz stuff.

In the third video clip, Mike talks briefly to JP, who is laying down a cool quiet part, and on his way out, he mentions the "inspiration corner", which is just a spot in the corner with a bunch of CDs. they are: The Who: Tommy Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Roger Waters: Amused to Death Radiohead: OK Computer The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band Marillion: Misplaced Childhood Pink Floyd: The Wall Pink Floyd: The Final Cut
Somehow I doubt that the entire album will be M2, but i wouldn't put a concept album out of reach... All of those influences are concept albums, so it certainly seems plausible, and I'd absolutely LOVE to see it happen.

Personally, I'd love a concept album. That's why I brought up "Inspiration Corner." I've always dug Floyd. I've always dug The Who. They were probably my favorite bands in my teen and pre-teen years. Now, I'm into harder/heavier stuff, which makes this the ultimate time for a DT concept album for me. I've always loved the thematic (lyrical or musical) coherence of "concept albums." I can't wait for a DT version. We'll see how heavy it is, though. Judging from the song that JP was overdubbing, I'll bet we'll have stuff that's a little more sedate than what we've seen in the past. I'll also bet, however, that we'll get a good dose of heavy stuff. "Balls 'n' chunk" and all...
Met2...well...I'd only want it on this album if it fit. If not, I can wait. Or...maybe we can have Met2 as an ACOS-type EP with a few B-sides thrown in. That, I would like. (MP, are you listening? EastWest are you listening?) Of course, I'd still have to wait in that case.
Anyway, I kind of ruined The Phantom Menace a little bit by going out and looking for spoilers. So, I don't want to do too much of that. Mike P., if you don't want to say anything about the album, that's fine by me.

Basically this is what I got out of it. The man (singing) has passed away and is speaking to his love, girlfriend etc etc. I have a feeling I am going to ramble. Take the verse.
The night shed a tear to tell of of fear and of sorrow and pain she'll never outgrow -him dying
Death is the first .etc etc
There's no more freedom, the both of you will be confined to this mind.- his memory will live on in her
I was told there'd be no one to call on when I feel alone and afraid.. this group is him telling of promises that he was told while still alive, thus bring deceit, the second without end.
Just keep my heart in your eyes and we'll stay alive-just remeber me and our love will live on.
as for the third, I know they are trying to say that love will live on no matter what, but I don't understand the reference to Metropolis and referring to her as she. I PERSONALLY THINK that it is God, think about it. She's taken you to her home. As in God has taken him to his grave. The miracle is the woman who is still alive, the sleeper is the dead guy. Love is the Dance of Eternity====love will live on forever.
My idea of a sick Met2 is when she falls in love with another guy, and he comes from the grave and kills everyone (just kidding, I watched Spawn yesterday)

The only reason Ive finally succumbed to post this is that Im sick of having my mail full of the piss-moan fest. I dont care if im flamed with "you dont like it, then leave!" comments either...you people should at least act like you have a shred of common sense. ><
And I guess you're the voice of reason of the jam, right?
On the subject of the new album, I think it will be a concept album entitled Metropolis II (w/possible sub-title). However, there will be no track entitled M2. There will be 10 tracks, but the idea will be the same as a Pleasant Shade of Gray. The entire album is one conceptual song, Metropolis II. But then again, APSoG wasn't in the "inspiration corner." while i hope its a concept album entitled metropolis 2, and i hope the theories are right because it would be great...but it *will* be a letdown. the secrecy is why im anticipating this so much. if it comes out and i pick it up and find out that everyone guessed right, it'd be like..."oh...i saw that coming. no surprise." i dont care what it is, at least i know itll be good.

I totally agree. I think FII was potentially ruined for me because of the openness about the album from the beginning. I still love FII, but because of all the talk about it on the 'jam a month before its release, people putting RA files from the songs all over, the bootlegs of new material from the fix for 96 shows, etc... There was no enchantment on the first listen to that album. I was just hearing songs I'd either heard or read about before.
This is great, though. We know absolutely nothing about the upcoming album. If the band is wise, there won't be any promos released a month early (although I wonder if they have any control over that). There should be no promos, period. That way we can all have a fresh listen to what could be the best album to close out the millenium. hehehe. The only thing I think that could equate to a DT release would be a new Ocean Machine CD at this point. (or the upcoming Subtlerage album) :)
We'll see what happens and I hope we all stay in the dark. -- KorgX3 is fishing in the ass hatchery.. NP: Nothing.

Everyone should own all of the "inspiration corner' albums for the lord sayeth that they were good.
Two things: I know that religion and all the flames that go with it are expressly forbidden on this list, but even though this is a Dream Theater fan list, you can't expect every message to be only about DT. I mean, for people like us (or at least me), music is a BIG part of my life. Hidden inside many of my favorite songs are strong comments on religion, life, and many other difficult topics in today's culture. I don't see anything wrong with a discussion on things like homosexuality or religion (emphasis on the discussion, not a curse-word festival. Or as we used to say in high school, "There will be no fucking swearing here!").
Second, I sort of hope that the next DT album won't be a concept album. Normally, I love long collections of connected songs forming a narrative or grand picture (see Tommy, Quadrophenia, Joe's Garage, plus many many more), but I was listening to The Wall yesterday and was trying to imagine DT making a Wall-esque album, and it just didn't fit. I'm not sure what it was. Is DT just too cool to be the storyteller? Do their songs cover such a wide musical spectrum that it would be tough to collect them into a 'concept'? Anyone else have this feeling?

So, Planet X played the Baked Potato in Hollywood (again). That makes it the 3rd time in as many months, and I guess they'll be back in August too. They played two shows, each running just under an hour (I think).
Set-lists: First show
Atlantis Money Shot Crab Nebulae State of Delirium Drum solo Day in the Sun (with some kind of extended jam stuck in the middle of the song)
Second show
Space Martini (with a jazzy-style piano solo stuck in there) Box Brunei Babylon Time Table (from Tony MacAlpine's CD "Evolution") Day in the Sun Drum Solo Atlantis
Line-up was the same as the last show: Derek Sherinian (keys) Virgil Donati (drums) Tony MacAlpine (guitars) Phillip Bynoe (bass)
Show was absolutely phenomenal. Better than the last one, just like I was hoping. The new guys (Bynoe and MacAlpine) have gotten more comfortable with the material, and it REALLY shows. Fuck me. More chops than you can shake a stick at. MacAlpine in particular continues to make changes to the guitar parts, adding his own flavor to the whole mixture.
Anyway, I think my other PX re-caps apply to this show too. It's late and I don't feel like writing a long-ass post, hehe. If these guys end up playing anywhere near you, for chrissake, don't miss it. I mean, just look at that line-up.
I also got a chance to meet Mike Mangini (Vai, Mullmuzller, and a whole shitload of other projects) at the show. Very interesting guy. Wish I'd had a chance to talk to him a bit longer, but he had to take off.
Oh yeah, Calvin's bro John and I also got to help Donati load some of his gear into his car. I only carried a couple of bass-drum pedals, but still!

Howdy, y'all....
With all the speculation of DT99 being a concept album, thoughts turn to an idea i had not too long ago. Now, admittedly, i've never wrote a concept album. But what i'm thinking is that these things take loads of time to write, rewrite and rework into a final version. We've heard here that the next DT record (whoops, used the word "record" -- didn't wanna show my age...) was written as it was recorded. That is, they went into the studio and just kinda jammed -- a al LTE -- until they had an album they liked. (That's a terribly general description, forgive me) Now that, to me, doesn't seem to be the way to make a concept album -- especially given the relatively short amount of time DT spent in the studio.
It just seems to me that circumstances are such that this album isn't going to be a concept album. Not the guys aren't talented enough to go in the studio and just pull one out of thin air. i'd just think that a concept album would require a lot of work before ever entering the studio; at least more than the impression i get that went into this one.
Debate at will........... :-)
