    This is a few days old, but I don't think I've seen it on the jam yet,
    although Itchy may have sneaked it in:

    "Kevin Moore has been writing new Chroma Key material on piano for the last
    month and a half. For the next few weeks, Kevin will be auditioning several
    musicians (none of whom played on Dead Air For Radios ). Rehearsing and
    recording will hopefully start sometime in August. Steve Tushar will again
    be the engineer and co-producer. The album will be available through
    Moore's label Fight Evil Records, and in Europe through Massacre Records."

    It would have been nice to see Zonder come back, but I'm sure KevMo won't
    dissappoint.

    BTW, who wants to bet whether (assuming Met2 is on the new album) the Derek
    version of Met2 shows up on the Christmas cd?

    Howdy, y'all......

    OK - any Asian jammers gonna be in Seoul Saturday night???
    What could anyone expect from that show? Between LTE and recording for DT99,
    the guys probably haven't had much time for rehearsals. Especially JR. Sure,
    he knows the stuff from the new record (if they're even gonna debut material
    from it), but it seems like a very short time to learn the other stuff.
    Wonder just what the set list will look like.
    Should be quite........interesting!!!

    Well, probably. While watching Woodstock coverage over the weekend,

    presumably they're touring, to New York just to do the Woodstock gig. HTH

    Hey everyone,

    If any Koreans or anyone else plans on attending the Dream Theater show
    in Seoul, Korea this Saturday and has the ability to tape the show, PLEASE
    EMAIL ME. (bogie@mit.edu)

    I would love to share this show on Lines in the Sand with everyone, and if you
    are the one to supply me with a recording of the show, I will ensure
    that you will
    receive a nice reward in return.

    On another note, if you are attending this Saturday's show, don't expect to
    hear
    any new material. I remember in a previous interview with Portnoy that the
    band
    wants to debut all new material on the upcoming CD first and not play any of it
    live until the tour for the album. As for the set list, I would expect to
    see a show
    similar to the one's DT did for Deep Purple last August but a little bit
    longer.
    Not to burst your bubble or anything! (although, who knows if they will
    slip a new
    song in there or play some old rarity!)

    Still, it'll be interesting to see Jordan's (second) take on some of the
    classics.

    Oh man, oh man, oh man, what a fucking show!!! Just saw Iron Maiden in Chicago last night, and it was easily one of the best shows I've been to (note: I didn't say THE best, just one of the best :). After easily finding the Aragon Ballroom, my buds and I got lost in downtown looking for this Italian restaurant we ate at before. Didn't find it, but ate at another kickass Italian eatery. As good as it was, that was a bit of a mistake since we were all bloated with pasta right when we got to a completely packed and extremely hot concert hall. It HAD to be the most tightly packed show I've ever been to. Clutch came out. Not as bad as I was expecting. I wouldn't mind seeing them again, only in a smaller club in a different setting. Monster Magnet has to be the worst band I've ever seen live. At first I thought all their posing on the stage (the singer in particular) was sort of tongue-in-cheek parody type stuff, but then I thought, man, they're not doing a very good job of it. They played their songs alright. I mean, I didn't notice wrong notes or anything, but they were just bad. The, the video screen came down (after a short wait) and the Ed Hunter video thing came on. I must say, that was one damn good idea for a way to open the show. I wouldn't mind checking the game out sometime. I don't think I really need to saya whole lot about the show itself. I mean, the band kicked ass as expected. Bruce sounded as good, if not better than ever. The three guitar setup really works, too. I really enjoy Janick's playing a lot mroe now. Highlights:

    The opening was killer Eddie walking around on the stage Great set list Dickinson is a damn good frontman that really knows how to work the crowd The band had a lot of energy, and that really affected the crowd's reaction, I believe "SCREAM FOR ME CHICAGO!!!!!" SCREAM FOR ME LONG BEACH ARENA!!!!!" (yes, Bruce did say this at one point with a rather wry smile on his face :).

    Lowlights: Monster Magnet the acoustics weren't all that great. The mix may have ben alright, but the acoustics in the place weren't the best the heat

    I really think Maiden is headed to do some bigger shows after the new album comes out. Definitely an act to catch. A couple guys in the show commented on my FII tour shirt I was wearing, as well as one guy I saw outside. If any of you are on here, hey.

    Jam,

    Well, this issue has been stewing around for a little bit so I thought I'd let it out (whatever)... WARNING: I will be using stereotypes... it's the only way any logical discussion can be accomplished. I understand there will always be contradictions... You will find that this never comes to any conclusion... because I can't think of one right answer... Oh well... just some Deep Thoughts...

    I thing that has come to my attention is the "mood" of mainstream music versus the "mood" of 'other' music (other meaning prog, metal, certain kinds of rock, etc). Popular music usually (stereotype) deals with less 'heavy' issues (aka. girl walking down street, goes for ice cream, meets boy, everything's hunky-dory)... I was thinking through my prog/metal collection, and I couldn't think of one that was aimed at that kind of mood. They were all the darker side of day-to-day stuff (LtL dealing with AIDS, Savatage's DWD dealing with Bosnia)... Or they would deal with fantasy situations (Sym X's Accolade, etc)...

    Whenever I play "my" music for my girlfriend, she likes some of it, but says she can't take too much because it's too depressing, "Can you play something more uplifting?" Then I through in a Matchbox 20 or the radio and things become more "uplifting." And she's right... aside from the musical aspect... metal/prog/rock has a more darker atmosphere (granted that's caused by the music, ie distortion guitars, etc)... But even the lighter progrock doesn't deal with the "hunky-dory" stuff that popular music deals with. I mean, honestly think through your music collection, and except for the one or two exceptions, none of the songs with deal with love (the pop version), romance, day-to-day uplifting aspects of life...

    Now don't get me wrong... I think that the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync should be SHOT on sight because they are an absolute discrace to anything resembling music... But one can't say they haven't sold records playing off the popular 3 minute-attention-span, light hearted popular audience... (Now lengh of the music is a whole different issue that is too much of a tangent to delve into at the moment.) Which brings up the question, if DT or any band like that, wrote a song (I honestly think it could be a very heavy and very prog like song) with a subject matter that the popular masses could accept, would that not help? Would you necessarily have to compromise musical integrety (define your terms) to become a popular band? I honestly doubt it because the lyrics and subject matter contribute a great deal to a band's musical integrety, but it's a thought...

    I am not saying AT ALL that I want DT to do this... I actually like them just the way they are... =) But this is just a thought.... Oh well... if you actually read through this, I'm impressed...

    Mark

    (Oh... are there ANY DTites in the North Carolina area? Or even better that are going to Duke? I'm going to be a freshman there next year and I was wondering if there is anyone else there)

    I've been buying more King Biscuit Flower Hour discs lately. Recent one is:

    The Dixie Dregs - Recorded before a live [DUH :)] audience at Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, PA, June 17th, 1979

    Yep, Rod Morgenstein was a sick pup back then, too. Just w/o the last 20 years of playing experience under his belt. In fact, the Dixie Dregs were pups themselves. In '79 they were only 3 years into recording.

    Yeah, ok, I had seen them in high school around then, so I needed to go take that stroll down memory lane again, especially given that the reunion seems to have become more than a fantasy at this point. That and I saw American Pie this weekend and I graduated in '79... It's all about Me, Not You :)

    I can't wait to hear this stuff live again! This is just a great disc, folks! If you like the Dregs, get it. I'd guess the quality is about as good as a live recording could get back in '79. Oh, if you simply can't tolerate Southern Rock and Country mixed in with your prog, don't get it.

    An exceprt from the liner notes:

    " 'The band has this nice image of being a groundbreaking instrumental fusion kind of band, carrying on from where the Mahavishnu Orchestra began -- making instrumental music a little more palatable to the average, non-musician listener,' Morgenstein explains. "

    Later in the liner notes:

    " The Dregs actually came together as a part of the school's rock curriculum -- Rock Ensemble 2, specifically. 'We could do the Dregs stuff and get credit for it,' Morgenstein remembers. They got a A for their efforts and took that as a aharbinger that they should stay together. "

    " 'I was just living and breathing the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and here I found Steve Morse, who was actually writing in that style,' the drummer says. "

    Ok, so there's this tune "Country House Shuffle." Just the name itself should be enough to throw you off. Off where, though? You'll never guess :)

    Lots 'o country jammin' in this song, plenty 'o good 'ole violin from Allen Sloan. Plenty of the usual and expected Morse shred in this one, as well as he and Allen dueling it out. Then the prog breaks in between it all with Morgenstein fills from hell :)

    THEN from like out of freakin' nowhere (to my ears anyways) at around 2:35-2:50, in comes this Mahavishnu, yep violin and all. You'd swear something off Bird of Fire was just edited in there!!! It's whacked!!! I LOVE IT :)))

    DTC: does how they got together sound familiar? Anyone know another bunch of guys that got together and started making music cuz they were into the same things? ;)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Trivia Time: Anyone know the story behind how the band Extreme got their name? I found out, totally unexpectedly, from a local dude at a bar yesterday afternoon.... while Aerosmith's "Seasons of Whither" was playing on the CD Jukebox. Yep, I was skull who selected the tune (would you rather have heard Cheeseburger in Paradise? good, then shut it!!! :). The guy smiled as he looked to be about my age and mentioned having not heard the tune in a while.
    If anyone thinks they know, have 5, no, make it 5000 points.
    To answer Chris' question about what FX units JP is using now, there is a shot of his LTE2 rig in the back of the booklet, which contains the following:
    Lexicon MPX-G2 FX unit (thats the one thats made for guitar, he used an MPX-1 on the FII tour, which is just a general unit) Eventide H4000 Harmonizer.
    I think thats all the FX that he used on LTE2, but on the FII tour, I think his rack had:
    Lexicon PCM-80 and MPX-1 (reverb/delay, and phaser, respectively) TC Electronic 2290 (for delays and chorus)
    dunno if he uses any compressors, though since he gets all his gain from the Mesa amps, I doubt it, since a cranked tube amp produces natural compression. Im pretty sure his volume pedals are Ernie Ball and the wahs are dunlop crybabys (he used to have a space in his rack for it, which you can see on his instructional video, dunno if he does that anymore).
    As for what FX are good buys, I personally have the MPX-1 and I think its a very good unit and pretty easy to use. I was able to order mine pretty cheap through the AMS catalog. It has seperate processors for reverb and other FX, so the sound doesnt deteriorate if you're stacking a bunch of FX on top of each other in one patch. Eventide's H4000 is always good...if you can afford one ;-) I think that's what JP might be using to do the whammy effect.
    Gibonni? Nooo! I`m sure you`ve heard of him! C`mon, Vlatko played at his last album, the one they`re supporting on this tour. The bad thing is that Vlatko comes out on the stage and does only songs on which he played. Overall, there were like 15 people on the stage. 3 guitar players, keyboardist, bass player, two drummers, then string quintet (cello, violin etc.) - 5 of them, plus 3 backing vocals... Hell of a show! I just saw a report of it on the TV. They asked Vlatko how the concert went...
    >POP??? Damn, this guy led the best jazz rock/fusion band in former YU! >Althought now he's not in those waters...
    yep, they gave him the title of the best pop guitarist... although, i think he deserves a bit more than that.
    >BOOK ME IN PAL!!! :-) >Chuj choveche, morash mi to pratiti, CEO shou! :-) >Nudim shta hochesh! :)
    hey hey! slow down :-)). Okay, i have the show on tape, i`ll record it onto disk... and i`ll play with Cool Edit. I`m not too good at it, so if anyone has any suggestion what filters and stuff should i use to remove the hiss and noise - i`m all ears. Anyhow, he played some great intros to the songs... Hey, they even played "Kao kakao" but unfortunately the tape run out, so i only have the intro and the end :-(((. But other than that I have the whole show... I`ll try to sneak a recorder this weekend at this biker days festival thing where Vlatko will have a concert with his trio...
    >> next weekend i`ll see Vlatko again with his trio
    >Hey what's the big deal with the Trio being so active in Slovenia and >Croatia? :( Here they did only 1 gig!
    well, beats me but the man played in Pula for 4 times in the last 2 years - once with Leb i sol and 3 times alone. The show with Gibonni was 5th and the one at Friday is 6th. And to think that i missed all those 4 shows... damn am i stupid! Well, i saw what i was missing those 4 times at friday...
    I only have his trio cd (he signed it for me :-)) and a Leb i sol LP called Rucni rad (for you only-english speaking folks, literally translated it would mean "hand-made"). I was thinking of buying some more stuff since alot of albums have been re-issued here...
