Do ya like Savatage at all? As good as O:M was, The Wake Of Magellan
topped it. And not only does each song go with the story(which has three
interweaving subplots) AND stand on it's own, but the album comes with a
booklet that has all the kickass lyrics, PLUS opera type 'in-between'
sorta poems to tie all the songs together! I mean, this was the best
album of 1998, and yes, I'm putting that ahead of LTE.
LTE2 is tops for '99, though. Or it will be until this fall. :)
Anyway, you can't not like savatage and this is their best album so just
trust me!

Hey, remember those M2 ads? "M2! Mnot! M2! Mnot! M2, M2, M2!"
Man, if I could get M2 that would ROCK! Or if maybe MTV would just pull
their damn beach-houses and bogus gameshows just a tad, just ever so
slightly out of my rectum, maybe then I could finally stop ramming my
head through the TV set. I don't know what's worse - the beach house,
the game shows... oh yes, when they COMBINE THEM and put the gameshows
on the BEACH HOUSE! And at least then, you'd think "well, they put the
game show on the beach house, so I guess they won't have the gameshow on
at it's regular time." wrong! wrong! It's like that game where you slam
the hammer on the little groundhog, but he just pops up somewhere else.
Except instead of groundhogs, it's gameshows. Instead of a hammer, it's
another goddam gameshow. Instead of a life, I have 24 hour access to
morons dancing and playing Double Dare.
Double Dare - now that was quality programing. I just hope skadz isn't
reading all these when he gets back.

I'm flying into Zurich next weekend and will be there for the weekend. Then it's
off to Germany for work. We'll be in Firerichshafen for 3 days or so then drive
north to Frankfurt.
Ideally Dream Theater, Conception, Lemur Voice, Spock's Beard, Superior have
decided to do some sort of ProgFeast that week, so I'll be hangin' out there,
telling them what the name of the new DT album shall be, whether to have it be
a box set or just stick with the original triple-disc idea. I like the triple
disc idea myself.
Disc 1 - Metropolis 2 - Dershe on Keys
Disc 2 - Metropolis 2 - Jordan on Keys
Disc 3 - Metropolis 2 - Kevin on Keys
This would allow us to flame till the 3rd millenium the various virtues and
shortcomings of each of the three.
If time permits I may head to Leiden (sp?) in the Netherlands to meet Dennis
(Stix) but we'll have to see how tight a schedule we're on.
Anyone that wants to hang out, shoot me an e-mail. Don't worry, I'm a lot worse
in person than I am on the jam :)

Agree.

I said this quite a while back and think it's cool it's the 'secrecy' concept

What's interesting is that they change musically along the way. It doesn't
surprise me in the least that they might change any other aspect of themselves. They changed keyboardists, producers, they've branched out into side project
things, etc.
Seasons change.... Sometimes there's something to be read into it, sometimes
it's just where they went. Life gets boring on the same merry-go-round after a
while. It's all about getting into something different and mixing it up a
little. Some people handle change well, some don't ("OH WHY OH WHY won't they
just do another I&W" sound familiar?
What's cool is they still manage to crank out a video every now and then. Mike
seems to be into sharing experiences with us quite a bit it would seem. I think
it's an incredible thing for a person like him to do! How many other bands can
you think of that allow us to be that close to their lives like that? I really
enjoy the 5YiaL on-the-road type shots, similar to LiT. Think about how much
we all know about this band besides the music itself!

Do you mean that all the bad press it got on the list might have had much of an
impact on sales? Or do you mean the band was emotionally hurt by it? DT fans on
the whole are just too rabid to leave in any significant quantities :)
You know how some couples go into the hospital to know what the sex of the un-
born child is? While others wait till the actual birth for the surprise? That
moment only happens once. That's not to say you can't enjoy thinking about
names for the baby if it's a girl (boy). When I get to that point in my life,
I know I'm going to be in that latter group.
:) And just to keep the religion thread alive:
In this case DT are like the all knowing, and all seeing great one. They already
know (or will soon enough) the sex and name of the child. They have all the
various attire picked out for the child.
Now, let us all pray for twins :)
Time to go carry myself to the shoreline and stare at the waves...for no
particular reason at all...

Until now, I hadn't found the less mainstream CDs on it - the stuff we tend
to look out for - so I haven't bothered posting about it to the 'jam. But
after CDNow Europe sends yet another shipment from the US which the UK post
office intercepts and forces me to go round and pay import duty on, I'm
looking at purely local suppliers from now on. Check out Boxman.

REAL DT content (about a year late):
I've been listening to my 'jam-acquired Hollow Years single (Thanks!) which
I got mainly to hear TWIUTB. But I've been listening to You Or Me just as
much. I really like the groove and even the Chorus of You Or Me more than
You Not Me. Which surprised me - I generally like what Desmond Child does -
especially the Bon Jovi and Alice Cooper stuff. It's only worth calling in
Child if you want to produce something catchy to get airplay. Which You Not
Me didn't really get, at least in Europe. Hearing TWIUTB, I just thought -
what if Desmond Child had worked on that? I think it's just the sort of
material he could have tweaked and created a real hit out of. Waddaya
think?

Someone recently mentioned something about how JP's guitar tone on part
of LTE2 reminded them of earlier White Zombie (i.e. Thunderkiss 65). I
just heard Thunderkiss 65 on the radio, and I can sort of see a
resemblance in the heavy tones, but it reminded me mroe of Dane Sonnier's
tone on the first Galactic Cowboy's album.

Just as a side point to what Bogie said,
Even if they HAD said Metropolis 2 would not be on the new album, that
could just be a cover for the fact that the new album may actually BE
Metropolis 2. This is what I personally think will happen. But I guess
that it's kind of meaningless to speculate, right? Hmm? :)
I haven't read the GW with the JP interview, but if he's doing things
like the more dynamic solos in LitS, that would be the bomb for me. That's
really what set him apart, in my mind. His slow phrasing is pretty unique.
When he starts playing fast, it's rather well done, but I start comparing
him to his influences, who I still think you can hear in his playing (ex.
Holdsworth on ToT, Morse on You or Me / You Not Me etc). I guess that's not
a bad thing, but I'm just really into hearing that unique sound of his. Oh
yeah, on Age of Impact he manages to sound like what I've built up in my
head as "John Petrucci" on the whole album pretty much (where he's playing,
of course. I know there are several players on the disc! :P) including all
the flashier playing.
I don't think that the idea of him practicing less technique will
prevent him from playing some truly fiery stuff, including some rather
technically demanding shred, if he's inclined. Gilbert hasn't done a real
shred album in a long time, and I bet if you went to his place and jammed
with him, he'd still shred you in half, ya know?
