Remember that Thick As A Brick was not only written as they recorded, but
also recorded in less than a month. It can and has been done in the
    timeframe DT had.

Why again discussions on Met.2 when it was said by DT themselves that
Met. 2 will NOT BE on the new album?
I'm sure we all want to get it, but it won't be on the new album! At
least that's what I remember being said.
What confuses me is that I'm sure jammers remember that info, so why
    rambling again?

Didn't check the videos yet, but the talked about Inspiration corner and
albums that were there seems pretty straight = it will be concept album!

If people are out of stuff to talk about, there's a new Tea Party CD out, a new NIN single, and just a lot of good music out there that probably doesn't get talked about much. I hope I'll have time to review some Medeski, Martin and Wood stuff soon because I just got this and it just blew me away. Remember, this is a DT-and-related-subjects list, and the best part of it has always been when somebody comes in and talks about some band or artist that you haven't heard about before, therefore exposing you to new kickass music.

I think speculation on what might be is just a waste of time, it doesn't change what the new album already is, and is just plain boring. It's comparable to 5yo kids trying to guess what they're getting for Christmas.

So that's my suggestion, since there's no DT CDs or shows to talk about, let's talk about other bands that rock our boat.

You seem to be mistaken. Dream Theater said that if the song were to be on the next album, that it would be a version completely different than the one written with Derek Sherinian in the band. They never said at any point that Metropolis 2 would not be on the new album.

]From what JP sez, he's not practicing technique as much as he used to. And from other things I've heard, I think the new album will be even more like the quieter stuff on Falling. They've already said Metropolis II has been recorded and is too much of an awesome sequel to actually name the album that. My guess is it will be a real free spacy type vibe with one or two totally complex song. One being Metropolis 2 since it's 20 some minutes long... ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Nah. Personally, I think one of the only concept albums I can really appreciate fully is QR's Operation Mindcrime. There's nothing like that album. It's the only concept album I've ever picked up where each song goes with the story while, at the same time, it is able to stand strong on its own.

This is something that takes strong lyrical ability, and I don't mean to start a flame war, but unless (as someone stated before) Jordan has some cards up his sleeve we don't know about, DT's strongest lyricist left with KevMo 5 years ago. But, on the other side of the token, Mike and the Johns have occasionally cranked out shit better than stuff KevMo wrote. John P.'s fantastical settings. Mike P.'s ability to convey emotion extremely well. John M.'s deep insights on life...

Perhaps if they milked each other (heh) and all got together to pour over each other's ideas, the union of their skills would produce something mind-shattering. But we've only seen a smudge of JLB's skill, and I thought the lyrics to Anna Lee were pretty good. I always used to think that the frontman sings much more profoundly if he writes his own lyrics. Maybe James is ready to kick all our skulls in. :) Rah!

But, then, it might not be a concept album, which would be alright with me even though I freakin' looooove concept albums.. :) Rah! Rah! -- KorgX3 swallows a jagged, little pill. NP: Tesla - Bust a Nut

Just read the post about DT and their record deal.

They just signed a new deal last year, and I *really* don't believe Magna Carta could do any better than EW. In fact MC has lousy distribution and even worse support, at least from what I've heard. EW made some mistakes in the past, but they are still a major label, and DT need the power of a major.

If you use proper left hand classical technique i.e. Thumb always behind the middle finger instead of first. You can learn to strech back, giving you at least 2 more frets. Try it, it helps. I can currently strech from the 10th fret to the 21st. Have fun... As I said earlier: If anyone wants to discuss Song writing, Theory, or Technique: I'M RIGHT HERE! =)

Damn! I take a few days off the jam and look what breaks out!

    Anyway, about the new disc:

    1) Met Part II - Just thought I'd point out that anything that might have been part of any unfinished compositions can always come out reworked, torn apart, and recompiled with a different name. (I.e. Metropolis Part II could have expanded to an entire concept album entitled "Sex, Religion and my Gay Lover". No mention of Metropolis at all.)

    2) No News is Good News - I, for one, have no problem with the news blackout that DT has imposed. The problem with releasing any early demos or news is the tendancy for people to "like the first thing they hear". Kind of the same effect as people liking best the first album they hear from an artist. You're asking for trouble when you release early demos or even just "concepts". You always end up with a flood of people who say "I liked it better the first way".

I really wouldn't put it past MP to show us "Inspiration Corner" just to throw us off of the trail of what DT99 really is. Not saying he did this, but as secretive as they've been the whole time, why show us Inspiration Corner and pack it with concept albums only? It just doesn't fit with the secrecy that's surrounded the project.

Personally, I think it's more likely that we'll see a six-to-eight track album with semi-long and average length songs, plus the elusive M2

I posted this back on alt.music.dream-theater a while back, but I updated it a little bit since then.

Since everyone has been talking about Metropolis II lately, I decided I would post the real deal (at least what I know to be the real deal) concerning the version with Derek and the version with Jordan It should clear up all the incorrect statements I've been seeing tossed around this list about M2:

The version with Derek: -- Dream Theater wrote a version of Metropolis II with Derek Sherinian on keyboards. However, the band only was able to perform the song straight through ONCE. Portnoy has this on DAT and stored in his archives. The length of this take was somewhere in the vicinity of 25 minutes, but the band wrote other parts which they were planning to add to the song which would bring it up to 30 min. in length.

I'm sure there are plenty of takes the band recorded which could be used to create a polished produced and mixed version of Metropolis II with Derek on keyboards. However, keep in mind that no vocals were recorded at the time the music was recorded. Petrucci has said in the past that the lyrics were still being worked on, but the music was finished. That's why you never saw Metropolis II in the list of "completed demos" in Portnoy's updates about the FII demo recording sessions. It was never completed due to the fact that the lyrics weren't written and the vocals weren't recorded.

Of course, we all know in January of 1999, the band decided to change keyboardists, drop all musical ideas written for Metropolis II while Derek was in the band, and start fresh musically with Jordan Rudess in the band.

The version of with Jordan: -- The question you all should be asking the band is not, "Will you record Metropolis II with Jordan?", but "When will you record Metropolis II with Jordan?" It's inevitable that Dream Theater will record this song with Jordan Rudess in the band as it is the most anticipated song of all Dream Theater fans.

Concept album or not, we will get Metropolis II some day. It may be on this next album, it may _be_ this next album, or it might be on a future album.

No one but the band knows if it has been recorded or if it has been tabled until a future album. Nothing is definite about the song being recorded yet.

Regardless of the outcome, be prepared to shit bricks over this next DT album!

They've just put up RA samples of four of the songs on their new album ("Dot Com", due August 23 on the Fuel 2000 label, a subsidiary of Universal Records), and they are real good (disclaimer: they don't sound like anything off of "Aqualung"). Whoever produced it (Ian maybe?) wisely decided to up the guitar and bass in the mix and the result is a lot more akin to their live shows than the previous albums. Check 'em out.

Oh, and they're touring the US pretty much immediately after the release of said album. And, keeping with my vendor theme of late, I may have a decent seat available to the PNC Bank Arts Center show on September 1st. Drop a line if you're interested, we'll talk business.

    Here's some logic for y'all.

    1. Metallica said they wouldn't cut their hair. 2. Metallica contradicted their statement (made a long time before the action) by cutting their hair. 3. Many longtime fans believe Metallica sold out when they cut their hair. 4. Dream Theater say they won't release another EP. 5. If Dream Theater ever releases an EP, they will be contradicting an earlier statement by its release. 6. If Dream Theater ever releases an EP, they will be selling out.
