    hi all,
where can I get DT merch best( like T-shirts, not the sticker site). Any
    url's?
Could anybody send me a copy of the two posts by a guy named maddog or
something like that, in which he analyzed the lyrics and stated that JP
    would overtake DT?
    thanks ,
    schnipp

oh boy - Skadz is gonna go absolutely INSANE if he reads up on these
    'jams.

All we need now is a thread on Metallica selling out, and we should have
covered all the bases....if I missed any others, please send a Top10 list
of threads that would drive Skadz nuts.

Anyone wanna stick their neck out on that one? :)

I'm hoping it's not titled Met. II, regardless of being a concept album or
not. I think that it'll be a "turnoff" for would-be listeners if they see an
album titled "Metropolis Part II - <your favourite subtitle here>" and think
"Part II? I can't buy this! Where is part one?" And, if they can't find an
album titled "Metropolis Part I", they go somewhere else, not realizing it's
a song, not a previous album.

    Or something like that.

I don't think that calling the new album Metropolis II is a good idea. And,
if it is a concept album, putting Part II in there without part I is a bit
    odd too =)

Nevermind, I'll buy it anyway and make everyone else buy it too =P

    > not believe the balls of STEEL that some of you have. Do you respect DT?
    > Why would you then offer any suggestion about how their new album should
    be?

Things were nuts about the religion and homosexuality stuff. The talk about
the new album has been the most interesting stuff I've seen on here in a
    long while.

What does speculation about what they are doing have ANYTHING to do with
respecting DT? I respect them . . . will absolutely love anything they
    decide to put out.

Is anyone so delusional on this list that they think in posting some guesses
about the new album that they actually think they are making suggestions to
the band?! The album is finished; we are guessing as to what the album is
going to be like, not telling DT what they should do.

    > Maybe Portnoy is really a strange guy and doesn't take that kind of thread
    > as an insult, but I just think that's incredibly disrespectful.

Yeah, I'm sure he's plenty insulted that people want the best for the band,
and are so infatuated with him that they wonder what he is up to and why he
is acting so out of character about the new album.

Now what is disrespectful is what happened with FII, where several people
were trashing the album before it even came out. That is totally an insult.
That is why I wonder if this was the reason for the secrecy this time
around. But to sit around and guess why this is going to be the BEST DT
album to date is not an insult, but flattery.

I can't see how you think guessing what they did in the studio is
disrepectful. Maybe I missed some post that set you off.

    >Let them
    > write their album. Let them keep it a secret! They're doing all that for
    > YOU, not to "make you crazy" and not because they're afraid of anything.

Well, again, since you quote me, let me put my statement back into context.
I am more than happy for them to keep it a secret! It adds a lot to
anticipation. If they are really smart, they won't play any of the new
stuff until after the CD is released either.

What "makes me crazy" is 2 fold. 1) I am crazy about DT, and eagerly
wishing October was already here, but more than that 2) the why behind the
secrecy. Because I've been on this list as long (maybe longer?) as you have
Chris, and you know this isn't the way the band has behaved with previous
albums. The "crazy" part is the fact that the fan base may have hurt the
band in some way that they are keeping this a secret because of that (my
fear anyway). And if that is the case, I think it is a real shame. So take
of that what you will. I am as eager as anyone for the new album. I can
wait in secrecy the whole time. In fact, I hope they don't spill any info
on it till it comes out. I am just hoping the secrecy is because of
anticipation setup or because of something unique about the album, and not
because of the way the fans have gotten over the years.

    >Don't pretend that you should have any input in that process.

Chris, did you forget that the band hired many of us as extra band members
    and engineers?

Who would be stupid enough to think that?

Please don't take my words as too heated. But I think it is good for the
band to create a lot of excitement and anticipation about the new album.
What do you suggest we do . . . all go into hibernation until the album . .
or sit around discussing religion and homosexuality issues? Or maybe
generate enough excitement about the new album that new fans develop?

I would much rather talk about something regarding DT (since this is a DT
list). And right now we are in an anticipation stage of the album.

Best to save your wit and wisdom (which we all know you have) for if people
start trashing the new album. Save up your energy until then. Then we can
turn to you and say, "Sic 'em Chris, sic em!" And then sit back listening
to the cool DT album while counting body pieces. But let us have a little
trip into fantasy until that time.

Hey hey, getting jumpy, are we? Would you rather see another christian
    bashing thread? Or Syrinx-bashing?-)

But seriously, I don't think it's a good idea to complain when we're finally
discussing something DT related. Note the word discussing! It doesn't feel
like people are saying what they think the new album should be, I think
they're saying what they either expect it to be (mostly based on the bits of
info DT have given us) or what they'd like it to be. Now, is there anyone
here who won't buy the album if it a) doesn't have Met II b) isn't a
    concept album c) a&b? =)

Hey All -- I would like to try and get us back on track from all this non= -DT ranting going on with Skadz on holiday. Someone not to long ago posted a brief history of DT on the list. Please read the following excerpt from it:

******** At one point the frustration to find the right guy became so intense they

actually considered an all instrumental route -- especially after a serie= s of

really bad experiences -- yet they decided to persist. This revolving doo= r

included John Arch of Fates Warning who came very close to getting the jo= b,

but he decided against it. Then there was the Geoff Tate clone from Seatt= le

named Steve Stone who actually sang a few songs with the band during one = of

the instrumental shows, but it was clear he didn't fit in. Finally, they

found Chris Cintron who appeared to be the right man for the job, that wa= s

until the tape from Canada arrived...

The man in question was Kevin LaBrie, then of the Toronto band Winter Ros= e.

Although Chris was days away from joining, the band thought the voice on = the

tape was too good to overlook and Kevin LaBrie was flown down to try out.

Unfortunately for Chris, he was out of the job, but Dream Theater finally

found the singer they had been looking for. ********

The question I have, is if anyone knows anymore about this period of the band? What are the series of really bad experiences DT had? We all know w= ho John Arch is, but who are Steve Stone and Chris Cintron? It seems to me t= hat DT was very close to having another lead singer if it hadn't been for our man JLB.

    all this other shit....

hmm.... concept album. Whats wrong with a little good natured specualtion about the record in the works? I think MP is probably reading this thread with interest savoring the fruits of his labors (keeping tight about the album content).

What I think.... because I know thats what you all wanted... lol!

its not gonna be a concept album. But... i do think that with JR on board that DT thinks they are gonna make their masterpiece that sets them in the ranks of best bands ever. And as for the albums in "inspiration corner"... I forsee a much more atmospheric album. Setting moods... I and I'm hoping that the new DT takes a huge cue from the radiohead OK computer... and gets more layed and experimental.

2nd prediction: more acoustic/piano work... they're gonna try to stay away from stuff that just rehashes what they (essentially) released with the LTE2 album.

as for the concept album.. I just dont see any of the DT members (unless rudess is a closet poet...) being that great storyteller thats needed to pull off a concept album. Maybe if they took time and pooled their resources then maybe... otherwise, if they try to rush it and write it on the spot, it could be hokey city!

    just a thought.

    Jam,

You know what, I bet right now Mike's stitting at his computer laughing uncontrolably... as he yells to Petrucci, "Heh John! Guess what! The jam thinks its going to be a concept album! Won't we suprise them!"

I honestly think a DT concept album would blow all the music walls down and kick serious ass, but I do have my doubts because of the way DT has claimed to gone about writting it (aka LTE style). And I highly doubt it will be a full Met2 song ala APSOG becuase for that very fact that Fates Warning has already done it.

But I am SO GLAD and impressed that DT has kept the lid on the leaks for this new album! The suspense is so bad ass! Lets keep the speculation comming! But lets not over hype it, TOO much... =)

Mike, don't tell us ANYTHING.... make us buy the album the nanosecond it's released and let us all delve into a musical heaven!!!!! Don't spoil it! hehe

Perhaps I was too brief (for once!) or perhaps you missed my point. I'm not talking about killing what I agree is a good thread. I'm talking about not taking it too far, as I feel some people on this list are (and do, regularly). This is all totally peripheral anyways. I'm just saying that it's a cool discussion but (re: point 2 of your post) it makes for a shitty argument. I'm much more concerned about some other shit, personally. Here's the big problem that will happen this year. DT is going to come out with an album that none of us were prepared for (I am in the camp that believes it will be a full length concept album, and I believe Metropolis II will be a part of that, either broken up and used in multiple songs, or otherwise) and then one person will find a way to get a promo. Then he makes MP3s of the whole album, so his friends online from Smetsvlarnia can get an advance copy. Then the Smetsvlarnian will post a review of this album, giving away all the secrets of the new album before it comes out, ruining the surprise for everyone who opts to wait for the full quality release. I think the coolest thing that could happen is that the promos that are released would contain cut versions, and radio edit type things, and then the real thing could come out with everything going on... that would rock all ass.

    Anyways, enough.
