"FDTS" consists of different remixes of songs from TDS, so it
makes more sence to get TDS first.

The thing is, I DO like Derek Sherinian. I do like his work with Dream
Theater very much. I met him twice (Detroit and Chicago) and he was also a
very nice and cool guy. So I really can't say anything bad about him.
The Planet X cd is incredibly complex. I do hear a lot of prog to it
however I just can't get into it for some reason. I'm into prog as far as
Dream Theater, Liquid Tension, some Rush and Pink Floyd, etc. Also a lot
into the more neo classical type stuff like Symphony X. Shadow Gallery is
great and so forth. I've heard some other prog bands people have talked
about on here and I just couldn't get into them. I like more melodic stuff
rather than just complexity. That's probably why I love Dream Theater.
They blend the complexity and melody very well. Hopefully Powermad will
expose me to some other cool, prog bands I can get into. :)
I just wanted to make sure it didn't sound like I was knocking Derek or
anything. Like I said, I do like the guy. I just can't get into the new
stuff I've heard. I'll definitely check out any future work of his though.
Take care,
Irene

I agree. I don't know what the big deal is about MP3.
I haven't heard anything on MP3 that I would listen to
on a real stereo. The quality just isn't there.
As far a cd's go, the only thing that would replace
them is something cheaper, higher quality or both. I
can't imagine either of those happening for a long
time. The cd is portable. Everyone has one. Even if
you downloaded cd quality sound from the internet,
what would you do with it? Burn it to a cd?
Obviously there are new technologies available to
download/store/transport/play digital music, but you
would need new equipment on your home stereo and car
stereo. Why go to all the trouble (and cost) when a
perfectly usable technology is already in place for
storage/transportation/playing digital music? And it's
cheap. It would be a huge cost to the entire industry.
What WILL change everything is going to be the move
back to analog. It will probably happen. All they need
to do is develop a recording/storage medium that is
truly analog. Something with no signal loss or
interference. Possibly laser based, with no physical
contacts that will wear or add noise.
We'll have to ask Al "the Ytseprogtologist" how close
we are to this. I'm sure he'll be buying the first one
on the market. ;o)

Is John Wayne American?
Dream Theater can NEVER stop playing heavy, it's in their blood.
I think the new album will be different, and be a change, but as the riffs
go, they will never lose that aggressive feel. FII had it (parts of New
Mill, YNM,Per Sk.,BMS,JLMB, that album rocked. True there will never be
another Awake, but they already made Awake, why do something twice?

I bought it just because I'm a collector. It's not that bad, really. You're
right about one thing, it's kinda "childish." The songs have a nice groove
to them, so they're not that bad. Talk about a band that's progressed, this
is definitely a starting point. Imagine the difference from III Sides moving
backward to Pornograffitti...then keep going. That's exactly what it's like.

Hey again folks..
The live prog FTP server has been updated again, this time with three new
shows. Here's what we've got:
Queensryche - 12/6/90 Milan, Italy
Rush - 10/25/76 Seattle
Rush - 3/24/86 Milwaukee
The Queensryche show is something I cleaned up a good bit and am pretty
happy with. Biggest problem after the "touch ups" are the slightly
over-zealous Italian fans yelling and singing along (badly). :) It
features a full Operation: Mindcrime with Pamela Moore as a live guest on
Suite Sister Mary (no, it wasn't the regular video synch'd to the
music). Excellent performance, pretty good sound (at least a hell of alot
better than it started). Check it out...
The two Rush shows come compliments of Dan Reynard - thanks go to him. The
first is from the 2112 tour and features, believe it or not, a full
2112. By-Tor and Anthem are also inspired, and Geddy's voice sounds like -
well, like it's 1976. :) It'll just squeak onto one CD, so go grab
it. The second show is a very good quality show from Milwaukee's Mecca
Arena (also the venue for another Queensryche show available on this site -
shameless plug). :) Check out the site for setlists and details.
*** Always remember to do yourself a favor and NEVER buy bootlegs. They're
meant to be shared freely among real fans,
*** not sold by some hack looking to make a buck off of someone else's
work. This is the way, this is the light.... :)
FTP anonymously to 24.5.106.175 - 6 users at a time only, so keep trying
(but DO NOT flood) if it's busy... Enjoy everyone!
Adam
PS. I'm looking to do CD trades right now (audio, not mp3 CDs), so if
you've got something I don't please get in contact with me. My list is in
the .sig.. Please excuse the out of date webpage (broken links, etc, but
the tapelist works dammit). :)

hey, everybody, howzit going? I've decided to start a cover band to make
some money with this music thing I've been doing since about fourth grade.
If there are any keyboardists in the Austin, TX area who would be willing
to play classic rock, 80's and 90's pop, and dance music in a cover band,
please give me a holler. I only want us to play two or three times a week,
and no originals. Also, unfortunately, NO PROG ROCK, 'cause I want this
band to be a party/bar band that people can dance to, and people can't
dance to 12/15 :P anyone interested can reply to me privately, or
call me at 478-8096 (if you don't know the area code, you're not close
enough!) I plan to make this a band that can demand at least a thousand
dollars a gig, so we can all take a decent amout of money home. also,
bonus points if you're a girl who can sing, 'cause that gives us more
versatility. I hope to hear from someone soon...
ps- to let you know what kind of money we can make, a drummer I work with
sat in with a cover band here in Austin called the Grooves for two weeks,
and made $1800.00 just for himself. something to think about...

YES!!! Chase is incredible...it's leader was trumpeter Bill Chase, a
veteran of Woody Herman's big band...Yes they were in the 70's, produced
about 4 albums, their first self-titled album, which is fairly easily
available on cd, two others were at one time available and i was lucky
enough to grab it, they're no longer in print...titled Ennea and Pure
Music...great balance of rock, funk, and jazz...the trumpets scream and the
organ and guitar feel is excellent...other excellent bands of the same type
that you could check out is Lighthouse, Chicago(before Terry Kath killed
himself), and Tower of Power...I personally find alot of Chase's and BS&T's
stuff pretty damn progressive....anyways, I'm really glad to see mention of
Chase, I'd STRONGLY suggest them to anyone...

I would say definately worth getting. Even if its not something you really dig you will
appreciate its creativity. Its very very 1990s. Its also pretty much the best industrial
music you will find, unless you're really into Ministry. Very depressing though, so
you shouldn't be looking for anything soothing, but I guess if you're a metal fan you
will be well aquainted with it.
On the mp3 subject I would say two things. The first is that, you've been able to
go to the library, borrow a stack of CDs and tape them, and that hasn't really been
a big problem. The other thing is that most artists make plenty of money from live
tours and merchandise rather than CD sales, so mp3s wouldn't be a huge blow, in
fact they may even bring more people to live shows.
One problem I have though, is this thing with people just getting one song. Could
this mean the end of the album as a whole? Personally I love well thought out albums,
with cool pictures on the covers and all that. I wouldn't like bands to start just
releasing songs erratically on the internet rather than creating albums that have
some sort of concept behind them.

It's started. http://www.emusic.com/. You can download individual mp3s from
different bands for $0.99 each. This could be beneficial, if people sold
entire albums for like $5 or something. And then you don't have to download
all the mp3s if you dont want to, but don't make them individually
available. That would be great, I think. And I'm sure the record industry
sees it the same way - hell, would they rather get $0.99 per person for a
one hit wonder, or $5 per person, and possibly only deliver that one mp3
anyways? moo.
