Wanted to pass this sad info along. Last evening some thugs broke into my
car and stole my CD player. Sad is that is, it was more upsetting to
learn Derek's Planet X was still in the player (luckily I took the new
Tiles album and JJ's "Fission"). Anyway, even though my loss is painful,
I hope there is one more prog fan in the world -- even if that love is
sparked by a stolen cd player with Planet X inside.

Concerning the new DT album not being heavy at all.......

Some inside sources inform me that (as far as heaviness goes) the new
album will actually make Meshuggah sound like Britney Spears. ;)

Seriously though, if I had to take some wild guesses; I'm not expecting
to hear Awake-type stuff, but I wouldn't be shocked to hear some fairly
ballsy stuff (ala PMU, UaGM, etc.)

In any event, I get the impression (especially from the JP quote
somebody posted recently) that the boys really had fun making the album,
which should mean it's really gonna kick ass!

Well Andreas, that depends on your computer.. i have a 366cel with a sound
blaster Live, and a set of Monsoon MM1000 speakers (flat-panel satelites and
6" sub) and MP3s sound increadible.. Much better than my stereo, Pioneer
Reciver, sony cd player and Sheerwood Satellites and sub (don't flame
please.. don't feel the need to upgrade yet, car stereo is MUCH better)

    This should be fun...

Name, in your opinions, the greatest songs of all time. Include any and all
songs that you feel are worthy of being listed as one of the greatest songs
and why. Don't let who wrote it, when they wrote it, what genre it is, or
even who has covered it since, influence your decision. Any more ground
rules anyone would like to add?

    Hi, there.
Sorry about the NDTC, I just didn't know where else to post.
The thing is that I feel that I'm growing from my old Yamaha PSR-400, which
I've had since i was 12. Because of limited fundings, I've decided to find
something used for, like, 1000-1500 bux. Here's a list of keyboards, that
I've found, and I'd like all you keyboard-wiz's to comment on those to which
you have comments. Well, here goes:

    -Yamaha PSR630
    -Yamaha 20M
    -Yamaha DSR1000
    -Yamaha YC-30
    -Yamaha DX7
    -Yamha AN1X
    -GEM PK7
    -GEM G70
    -Good SP95
    -Orla (?)
    -Roland G600
    -Roland JB80
    -Roland XP-10
    -Roland D20
    -Roland SH-2000 (from 1979!)
    -Roland JD800
    -Technics KN900
    -Technics KN2000
    -Alesis QS-8
    -Korg Trident
    -Korg M1

Unless there's something really interesting in your answers, please keep 'em
    private!

    Take care now, bye-bye then

It's not only the sound quality I'm having trouble accepting. I don't lik=

Trust me, NO ONE can make Meshuggah sound like Britney Spears! Especially
    not Dream Theater.

Truly analog will be quite difficult because of our uncontrollable desire
to look for the path of least resistance. Some asshole will certainly try
and digitize it somewhere along the way in an effort to save time and $$$.

Don't hold you breath on that assumption, you'll have more than blue balls.
I always wait a few years before jumping on ANY new technology, I didn't buy
my first CD player until 1987, three years after the media was readily available
to the general public; I still never really took the format seriously until some
of the hi-end companies did some serious refining. The hard work of those
companies have surfaced in the form of "trickle down technology" within the
consumer players of today... In a striped down, simplified, easy to mass
produce version with little or no attention to maintaining signal purity. (As the
original circuits dictated) To make things worse... They use a butter-metal and
cardboard chassis with some of the most gruesome sounding power supplies
imaginable. Nothing like powering Op Amps and D-to-A converters with
dirty DC. And don't you just love those plastic front panels? As long as the
consumer at large continues to buy this shit, they'll just keep lowering the
standards and raising the profits. If more people would buy mid-fi and hi-end
gear, you'd see a huge change in the marketing strategies of the large
manufacturers. Wouldn't it be nice to see Sony, JVC, Pioneer, etc... competing
to build the BEST, rather than the most economically competitive?

What if the medical industry started applying the same kind of logic that
the consumer electronics industry does? Oh wait... They already are.
My point: Raise your standards! Because they never will without public
motivation in the form of SALES. Or lack of.

Oh shit! I'm preaching again. :) Doh!

OK, here's what I think. The roland jd800 may be something you'd like to try, along with the d20, Korg m1, and maybe the dx7. It all depends on what you are looking for. void the psr models, they aren't going to do much more, in my mind, than you already have. Some of those keyboards are rather decent. Let me give you another option, though. Look into the Roland XP30. It costs under $1500, and does quite a lot. The xp10 may be another good one. Don't buy a keyboad at all until you can hear it. A lot of those models are discontinued. Try going to a music store, or go to a few online places like kraft music, http://www.kraftmusic.com, sweetwater sound, http://www.sweetwater.com, or look at some musician web sites like synthsite, which I forgot the url for, harmony central, http://www.harmonycentral.com, hyperreal, http://www.hyperreel.com, or hyperreal.com, one of those work, or synth zone, http://www.synthzone.com. Hope all this helps. At 08:48 PM 7/30/99 , you wrote:
