You call that a fantasy??...I call that a very intense bad acid trip <possibly more than 22 hits worth>

I havent posted here or even read this digest in some time...I come back in and i read that Skadz is on vacation and then multiple "Fuck you you are full of shit!" posts

I have no comment here....just funny thats all. Makes me wonder if some on this list arent just a LEETLE bit crazy.

Well, since I got two great responses I will not fail to mention this time that I marched for the Blue Knights Cymbal line in 98 and I almost marched fifth bass but I decided to stay home this summer for practicings sake. I was also asked by Santa Clara Vangaurd to come down and play for them but you have to be 18 because you have to move down there and Im not quite 18 yet...:-( but anyway theres my story Charlie

    Hey all...

Am I the only lurker on this list who feels a few threads are irrelevant to the topic of this list?

This kind of stuff has been going on for a while, and I realize it's easy to spout off a quick and impassioned reply when somebody posts something that doesn't agree with you, or when somebody insults a good friend of yours. That's easy to do, and I admit I've done that a time or ten in my younger years.

Just because Skadz is in Ireland for 2 weeks (lucky guy) doesn't mean the list has to fall to pieces. I don't think I'm going to ruffle too many feathers by making a few suggestions to everyone:

    1. Grow up a little. b. Think before you post anything. Ask yourself if the rest of the list needs to see it. 4. Private email is a *wonderful* way to reply to something that is either controversial or not relevant to the list.

I'm not going to name names and start condenming people, but you guys know who you are. These kinds of discussions (flame wars?) are usually something that most mature adults should know how to avoid. They're not constructive, they bring down the rest of the list, they can be hurtful... and most of all, they aren't supposed to be here.

This is a place for discussion of music, Dream Theater, and topics relevant to that. Doug Pinnick's sexual preferences aren't relevant. Neither are the ramblings of Nostradamus or the construction of space probes, as intriguing and thought-provoking as they tend to be. And definitely not the outright accusations and insults that have been flying lately. We should know better than this by now.

As members of the Ytsejam mailing list, representing and discussing the band known as Dream Theater with the rest of the internet community, and representing a new 'standard' of music for people to appreciate, we need to set a standard for maturity and intelligent list content. People are watching us (not just the men in black suits, mind you) and we need to collectively wise up. Heck, our own band members watch us. Anybody care to ask Mike what he would think of some of the stuff that's been posted lately? Ever wondered why the rest of the band doesn't get involved with the list more?

There is indeed a reason why Skadz set up the listserver to keep the headers and e-mail addresses of the senders of the posts you see. It doesn't take 15 seconds to change the "To:" field when you're replying to something off-topic. Please learn this.

In fact, use it. If you want to reply to me or address a concern with my above post, use my private e-mail address (that's mschnoor@yahoo.com for those of you who can't read the headers) and talk to me. I welcome any comments through private e-mail. :)

    Now, for something completely different.

    "It's..."

UK. I just recently discovered this band for myself. Bought a few live boot CD's at Progfest 99, actually. What I've heard so far has been absolutely incredible... powerful, dynamic, and really catchy. (Rendezvous 6:02 kicks my butt all the way to Saturn and back.) How did I totally manage to miss these guys? I'm thinking about getting studio albums if I can, and looking for recommendations from those who know. Related projects would be welcome ideas as well.

By the way, Al... I recently happened to check out your webpage and saw the pictures of the subwoofer box you're building. That's looking pretty sweet, as is the picture of your nice speaker stack. I look forward to hearing it someday. :)

On the topic of religion... I'm certainly not a regular church goer, (neat word, huh?) nor could I be characterized as a hyper-religious person, but here's my take: If a person is truly strong in faith, I find myself having a hard time imagining that person breaking into my car at 3:00 AM and helping himself to my car stereo. I also find it unlikely that this person would be cutting my mother's finger off with a pruning sheers to pawn her ring off for drug money.

My point is: This class of people, in general, are better behaved and far more trustworthy than society as a whole. Even if religion is total bullshit, THANK GOD a few people hold themselves to higher moral standards. If religion is the vehicle of a better behaved society, than so be it.

Contrast today's social problems against those of yesteryear, back when religion was a big part of the family unit. I'm not preaching, I'm just reflecting my own personal observations. I think I've said enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wait a minute... I hope you don't think that TON wrote "Summer Breeze." If you do, you're wrong. The un-butchered version of "Summer Breeze" was, I believe, written by Seals & Crofts back in 1972. All TON did was pull a "Weird Al" with it.

You know what really pisses me off, is when everybody in pop culture yells and screams at the close minded-ness of the 'establishment' and goes out and says that being gay is acceptable and that anyone who says otherwise is being judgemental, but THE INSTANT that anyone brings up anything having to do with Christianity, there's always some closeminded schmuck who comes out and laughs it off like the ramblings of some madman. I mean _everyone_ is so hypocritacal about this subject. If I posted something about the beliefs of Budah or the ancient writings of some eastern religion, everyone would look at that and say, "interesting..." but as soon as someone posts something about God everyone covers their ears because they can't stand to listen to it. You ever notice that? Remarks about God ALWAYS get a responce, because it always effects you. You can't just say "well, that's OK for you, but not me." You have to "point and laugh" and belittle the offending ideas -- why? Because you are AFRAID of them!

I was in a Drum and Bugle Corps when I was 13 or 14, back in Monroe CT. We'd formed a corps -- the town's first -- and it was a relatively small affair compared to the bigger groups in the area, but we had fun. I played tenor drum. The corps was called the Tough Riders; I have no idea if they exist anymore. Fun stuff, although parades were kinda brutal (YOU try marching 5 miles at age 13 carrying a heavy tenor drum :)).

In the beginning, there was guitar. It was constructed of the finest mass known to man:

    Wood. Huhuhuh.

And it had 6 strings. And God begot Man and Man begot God and together they were an argumentative lot, but they agreed that this guitar thing was good. So Man played with his guitar. A lot. Usually behind locked garden bushes.

But then God thought that this was a pathetic sight. His only creative being playing the damn guitar all day long, when he should be looking for a real line of work, like an engineer or a proctologist. So he created woman, and she bitched him out harshly about chasing pipe dreams and suffering from delusions of granduer constantly...and threw the guitar out from the garden gate clearing when some dude who didn't believe in the whole "god" thing was walking by and got nailed upside the head, losing an eyeball from the whammy bar's spearing projectory. The pagan was pissed. And the first metalhead was born.

So God invented the pipe organ and told Adam to play that instead, because holy people play organs, and evil people play guitars with whammy bars. Some people pretend to be good AND play the whammy bar guitar but it is not so sayeth the Lord and it was so. They're still evil. 'Cuz he said so.

Then one day some crazy bastard came up with the idea of fusing the light worlds of keyboards, and the evil world of guitar and putting them together IN A WORLD...where Electricity is the governing power. Elvis begot the Beatles who begot Black Sabbath who begot Flock of Seagulls who begot Dream Theater. And this Dream Theater band refined the combination to perfection.

And that is why we see this same goddamn religious discussion popping up on here on a biseasonal schedule. It's not like John Petrucci or Kevin Moore or John Myung or even Portnoy have religious views of their own that may SPILL into their song writing...so continue bickering over who's god is better. It gives me something to read during the rest of this long summer break :)

    I think.

I was in drum & bugle corps for three years (plus 1 year as an instructor). I think a lot of musicians and prog fans could really get into drum corps and I would be happy to talk about it all day long. On the other hand, a lot of my friends got really turned off by my playing drum corps CD's too much, so I try not to push it on people. I always wonder if the really good drummers (like our Mr. Portnoy) have had the opportunity to listen to some of the really good drum lines. Since drum corps only have brass and percussion, their arrangements necessarily require percussion instruments to carry some melodic as well as rhythmic parts. I think that's something that a lot of rock drummers could learn from....Anyway, anyone would like to discuss corps, feel free to email me. I don't think I've gotten any response to any of my posts to the 'jam over the last year, so I'll assume that I won't get any this time....

Are any of you jammers out there into drum corps or any types of marching bands. This would mostly pertain to the drummers I guess, but any of you who play any other instruments in that area, reply to this. I just saw a Drum Corps show in Denver at Mile High Stadium and it rocked. That's all for now. Charlie

I have never seen so much misplaced hostility. So what if you had a bad day at work, if it was just so fucking hot outside, if that guy cut you off on the interstate. Let it go. Life is too short to go making big issues out of nothing.

Korg already explained his position that the N*********s thing was just a lark. He didn't seriously believe it, just a coincidence he wanted to point out. Then others start to take his remarks as fact. He never said it was fact, purely conjecture. Imagination helps to keep us sane. I too like to escape from the boring and humdrum of my job by engrossing myself in music. Of course, I also have my own jazz quartet which plays irregularly and helps me live out my fantasy of being a "real" musician.

Korg the Cynic quoth: >This whole fucking world is a waste of time.

The world is what you make of it. Hell, the world would be more entertaining if "army of horny pink homosexual transvestite elephants wearing leather chaps came flying out of anybody's ass and had a wild orgy on the front lawn." It could happen. ;)

Another religious and/or gay-bashing thread? How.. ehm.. original. ;)

I thought these FACTS were thoroughly established: Moses was gay. Adam and Eve were gay. Jesus was a gay pedopfile, and very well hung. God was, and is, REALLY gay. The Holy Spirit completes the trinity. John the Baptist was a pedofile. The Virgin Mary was into watersports. The Bible is a book. Dogma makes simple moral rules, and makes us hate, torture and kill our fellow human beings. Barney is both a dinosaur, and a man in dinosaur suit. The present (very gay) Pope likes kielbasas but disapproves of women in the clergy. Any questions?

    > Considering we're working on probabilities so minute that it's unreasonable > to worry, I just thought I'd corrolate how this possible disaster could > occur at almost precisely the time that Mr. Nostro predicted, in the same > manner he predicted. But, you got me.

(I'm familiar with the illustrious Mr. Damus as well, of course, from the Stratovarius "Visions" record.. :)

But the plutonium in Cassini.. well that's nothing as far as disasters go. There was an interesting letter to the editor in this month's Scientific American about the possibility that the researchers at Brookhaven could accidentaly create a "mini black hole" by a high energy proton-antiproton interaction. (A "MBH" is an odd timespace singularity postulated by Hawking that doesn't require a large physical mass)

If that happened, it would chew its way down to Earth's core and devour the entire planet within a few minutes. Our planet and our entire civilization, all of us, gay or not; all the Pope's kielbasas, all our CDs, all copies of the Bible, would be folded into a thimble-sized light-sucking wrinkle in spacetime that would keep orbiting the sun for quite some time. If any aliens popped on by all they could ask would be: "gee, what the heck happened here?"

I remember Larry Niven wrote a short story with this premise many years ago (a MBH was part of some alien artifact (gravity wave transmitter IIRC) on Mars got inadvertently released into the planet core)

The reply of course assures that such a development would be unlikely, but goes on to outline the possibility of formation of "strangelets", which could be problematic in an ice-9 type of way. [ Are there even any bookworms here that know Ice-9 as the topic of a Vonnegut book, and not as a Satriani song? ;) ]

Anyway, I'm more worried about stuff that would end the whole universe. Who cares about us, nostradamus and our little piddly shit planet? God? Barney? Who? :)

So, one person thinks it is sad that Doug is gay because of their religious beliefs.

Another thinks this is sadder, because they think this person's religious beliefs are based on ignorance and intolerance.

    Ok, . . . hmm . . .

Maybe the saddest thing of all is EVERYONE claiming to be an expert of life?!

Funny that of all the harsh responses I've heard to the post about Doug being gay, just about all of them spout off about how religion is so judgmental and ignorant, and that all such people are close-minded, prejudiced fools. Such reasoning surely places you as an expert on life. After all, YOU have just placed judgements on the MILLIONS of people who hold to some religious belief. One man gives his beliefs. You react harshly about how he seems judgmental, and then you judge not only him but millions of others?! Your outlook on "religious people" is based on how much actual experience? "Oh, I knew this one guy . . . " One guy?! "There was this whole church of about 100 people . . . " 100 people?! Get around closer to the millions of close contacts with such people, and then I will be much more inclined to listen to your arguments.

Maybe it isn't the absence of personal beliefs that would make this world a better place.

Maybe it is more a humble nature that is tolerant of people (if they don't have religious outlooks AND if they do!), and the realization that the biggest fool among us is the one who always thinks they know the answer (whether religious or anti-religious).

Anyway, this thread is getting boring pretty fast. Can't we move on to some other, more interesting things (like why DT isn't telling us squat about their new album). Besides, Skadz shall not be happy with us uponeth his return!
