I have to disagree here, the album is IMO very progressive, doomy,
    perhaps
a touch hear and there, some of the songs are very Floydian feel about
    them.
But no matter what you want to call the style, it's friggin brilliant.

I agree totally, there are leaps and bounds in front of any other
    British band
    right now, buy it.............

Just got the new Kreator disc, 'Endorama', very heaving and melodic,
    even a hint of
goth, surprisingly some humable melodies too, worth checking out.

There is no good stuff. Send it to me, immediately, so I may
indulge in your refuse. ;) I don't have any IE cd's, but I do like them
    a bunch.
LTE2: not going there. However, every time I listen to the cd, I
believe I will recall listening to it while stuck in traffic leaving
Tahoe on the July 4th weekend.
Other stuff: I picked up some Amorphis (Tuonelo, to be exact), after
hearing someone mention them on the jam, and reading the description on
the album cover. Pretty good stuff in the doom metal genre.. really
neat eastern influences. Some of the tracks sound Arabic, while some
have a Spanish flamenco feel to them. Very interesting stuff.

    Jon,

IMO, that particular IE disc is not their best. My personal fave is "The
    Dark Saga."
I found SWTWC a bit hard to get into as well, and that's coming from someone
    who
knew what they sounded like! Although there are some tunes that I really
    like on
that album, overall I don't think it gels as well as I would like it to.
    And that tendency
to put a ballad every other song does get a little annoying after a while.
    For me,
Matt Barlow's vocals are what draws me to their music. I rank him up there
    with
John Bush and Zach Stevens as my favorite metal vocalists. If you find
    anything
at all appealing about SWTWC, I urge you to pick up TDS. Again all IMO, it
    is
a much more cohesive album and the song "The Hunter" has one of my fave
    riffs
    ever.

    Hi there!

I was listening to Abbey Road when I read all your comments about
bands changing and "progressing", and I started to wonder what
Beatles fans must have been feeling back then.

Imagine, these guys went from "She Loves You" to "I Am the Walrus" in
less than 5 years. How's that?

BTW, they were releasing two albums a year at the beginning of their
career, and nowadays the labels don't want to release an *EP* a
whole year after the last album because they are afraid of
    oversaturation. Mhhh...

I was checking out www.dreamtheater.net, the news section, and for some reason tried translating it into French with Altavista's Babelfish engine. Guess what? "Last news from Mike Portnoy" turned out as "Les derni=E8res nouvelles du microphone Portnoy!"

I think the keyboard/drums bridge (i think it's a bridge) starting around 1:50 on WTWB sets up anticipation for the guitar solo coming up.

    > you know something's coming up (vocal) after a wanking

Oh man, do you know something big is gonna happen with that part as it builds. Mike adds in the cymbals, and JP is, dare I say lurking, with the quiet guitar adding in the wah-wah ever so slightly. One thing I've noticed is the amount of control on LTE2. They seem to be in so much more command of a song.

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time....yadda yadda yadda

If they didn't pack the disc, someone would bitch about the 15 minute song, and how it shouldn't be on there. Instead they should have put 3 other awesome tunes. If they don't use the wank enough, people bitch that they wish JP would open up a little more. It's a no win situation no matter what they do, if you look at it that way.

Ok, who's the 90's prog-snob who decided to start using the term 'wank' to stain the concept of "playing the heck out of one's instrument"? :)

Anyone have the neighbors call the cops on 'em yet, for playing LTE too loudly? I'm giving it another shot sometime this weekend :)

    Have a great weekend, everyone!

    AZTEC JADE - Frame of Mind USA Rating: * * * * * September 1997 CMG CMG 9704-2 Playing time 42:32

Aztec Jade is: Timothy Becker on Keyboards Matt Howenstein on Guitars Bryan Kowalski on Bass Rick Miller on Drums Leon Ozug on Lead Vocals

    The tracks are: 1. The Calling (4:18) 2. To Believe (5:12) 3. Mad Not Crazy (4:15) 4. Desperate Land (2:57) 5. Nosferatu (4:37) 6. Atlantis (4:24) 7. Regatta Fugue II (3:24) 8. Stained (4:19) 9. Gates Of Babylon (4:14) 10. Requiem (4:30)

This is the second release from the New York based prog-metal band Aztec Jade, and the follow up to their debut CD "Modern Prophet". The CD has a very god production and the musicians are very technically skilled. This together with the good songwriting and the great hook lines performed by a powerful singer makes this album a real killer.

Aztec Jade is reminiscent to Dream Theater with heavy complex riffs and catchy melodies. The best tracks are "The Calling", "To Believe", "Desperate Land", "Nosferatu", "Regatta Fugue II", "Stained" and "Requiem".

This album really gets to your mind. Great Stuff that is highly recommended! Go get it!

    Hey there guys and gals,

I just wanted to let ya'll know that it's now official. This summer I'm recording my soloproject/cd, probably under the name of Nemesis. I will be writing material with guitarist Marcel Coenen from Lemur Voice and singer Gregoor van der Loo also from Lemur Voice. Also guitarist Martijn Visser (ex-Nemesis) wil join. This week I wrote a killer song with him. I might be putting a rough version of it online this week. You can also request it from me thru ICQ (#21285351).

The first week of august, guitarist Tom Hakala (Nemo) from Finland will be flying over to the Netherlands to write and record some songs with me and keyboardplayer Marcel Faas from a band called Signs. A bassplayer is yet to be picked.

Marcel Coenen and I will be recording 2 or 3 songs at the end of august. Gregoor might be doing vocals on some other songs too. Also singer Nick Hameury from FORM will be doing some heavy (screamy) singing on some songs. Like he did on the latest Lemur Voice record. As it looks now, half of the songs will be all instrumental.

It's gonna be killer. The style would be somewhere in between Platypus, LTE, Joe Satriani, Pantera and DT. Not everything will be too progressive. There will be some acoustic stuff on it too. But the tracks I'll be writing with Tom and Marcel wil definately be progressive tho. Marcel and I might also be doing some really heavy stuff. Since he plays a 7-string Ibanez.

For more info you can check out my site at http://www.xs4all.nl/~dl. Don't forget to sign my guestbook if you have any comments or ideas on the project. People that are interested in doing some artwork (for free) are welcome too.

Hope to hear from you all.

it's been months since i've posted...

if you've heard LTE, then it would seem to me that you would go into LTE2 expecting wankery. to me there's good wankery and bad wankery. the LTE project is all about bombast and self-indulgence, but i don't feel that it comes at the expense of the musical compositions themselves -- the wanking fits within the context of the piece and continues to move the piece along in a certain flow...the wanking isn't pointless. i will admit that there are a couple of instances in the composed pieces (the jams are a whole different animal, imo, and bound to have more pointless wanking then i would find appreciable in a composed piece) where john or jordan seem to get a bit too indulgent, but overall i find that the flow of the music and it's cohesiveness (*word of the month*) to be a lot better in LTE2 than in LTE.

..and i've heard *bad* wankery where the wanking didn't seem to flow or really go anywhere within the context of the song. scott mcgill's hand farm opened for spock's beard in philly, and between bands mike "syrinx" ostrich came up to me and said "these guys can really play, huh?". yes they could play; too bad they couldn't compose...now *there* was an example of wanking without any purpose other than to show off some speed and technical prowess. the pieces were without *any* sense of flow or cohesiveness. ...imo only, people; no offense to those who enjoy their music.

anyway, someone said that they liked the songs on LTE better. i feel quite the opposite; i like the opening rift of "paradigm shift" better than any other instrumental segment that i've ever heard, but in terms of the whole, i really do like "acid rain" better, or at least equally. PS has a rather long dull section in the middle, which i do enjoy, but i've found i prefer AR which has only a brief section of over-indulgence to mar it's overall appreciability. and WtWB is simply the best instrumental ever. hands down. brilliantly composed, it truly has me captivated from beginning to end, which instrumentals rarely do, as much as i like them. the other two composed pieces, "biaxident" and "another dimension", are also both exceptional, but i'm not going to go into comparisons at this point (i've only owned the disc since may, after all).
