Interesting you should mention that, it's actually the other way around,
those guys wrote this song ages ago... remember, the Dali's album was
supposed to be released back in October of 98, actually, the summer of 98,
so we're looking at almost a year after it's supposed to be released, and
the songs themselves were written a couple years before that!! They've changed
a few things here and there for the final release, but then the band was
asked to play on Age of Impact (Guillory and Bradley mainly), so, therefore
    maybe the similarities...

On the subject of converts I have had a few successes, my best success is my now Ex-girlfriend she was instantly taken a-back by DT, she thinks that JLB is a brilliant singer loves most of the songs and even sings along to them, even though she would normally listen to run of the mill stuff that charts, she is also now an Ozric and Primus fan. And I agree with the video statement's that they are surplus to requirement, I would rather just watch concert footage as long as the music was actually live. David C

    Hi all,

Since most news is hush hush out of the DT camp I am enjoying this hi-fi/mid-fi discussion. So I stumbled upon a nice store today in Hamburg and they had one of the Rotel RCD-971 CD players. Ok I didn't get to listen to it but I remember people saying that this was a good entry level mid-fi component (right?). Anyway it cost 699DM which is about $400 (due to the kick-ass dollar!). The old replies to my query are on a different computer but I remember people saying these should cost something like $600, or am I crazy?

The also had a complete Rotel system including an amplifier and a RCD-951 (I think) CD player and a small pair of B&W speakers (what I would call a bookshelf model speaker) for 999DM (roughly $550). Is this a deal? Does Rotel also make good amps?

Lastly I was thinking of getting some new speakers. Right now I have two pairs. One pair is from an old old stereo I have made by Sanyo *cringe* and them I have a pair of small Advent bookshelf speakers. How good are Advent speakers? And should I bother hooking up two pairs of speakers to a reciever (yeah I don't have a seperate pre-amp/amp yet) just because it is A/B speakers? I certainly don't listen to any surround sound stuff so normal stereo is just fine.

Anyway is it possible to buy a very nice set of speakers that are only about 1-2 feet tall? I don't have that much space right now but I want something good that I will be able to use later when I get a bigger place. Or are all bookshelf speakers crap? What brand/model should I look for?

Ok enough of my babbling, hopefully I will get some good suggestions on how to spend my hard-earned money *chuckle*.

You mean like letting people freely express opinions you disagree with?

    > What is wrong with buying a CD for just one or two songs?

There is a big difference between buying a CD *for* one or two songs, and buying a CD when you only *know* one or two songs. The people that buy a full length CD and only listen to the hits are perpetuating the problem. They're spending $16 when they could get the same music for half that (or less) buying singles. The record company then gets a platinum artist to milk, despite the fact that half those million CD's never get listened to all the way through.

I think everyone has bought a few CD's because they liked one song, and once they got home they discovered the rest of the disc sucked. But at least they gave the rest of it a chance.

Just been listening to the FII Demo of You Not Me (titled You Or Me) and I much prefer it to the version that made the album. For those who haven't heard it, it's not hugely different from the FII version; the chorus has been changed slightly and the keyboards sound like they are higher in the mix (and the song benefits hugely from this).

I'd be happy to ICQ it out to whoever's interested.

Wow. Your maturity level is astounding. If this were the first time you dumped down a stupid response like this, I would have ignored it. But you seem to begin most of your disagreements with "Shut Up, Shut Up, Shut Up!" Excuse me for going out on a limb here. But that isn't helping your argument here and it makes you look like an arogant ass.

    > Everyone has a mind of their own. Let them use > theirs however they see fit.

Yes, but the point he was trying to make was so basic, that I think you missed it. He's saying that people should be given a choice. Whether or not your head has been in the sand for a number of years, good music doesn't get a fair chance. I don't care whether you think MTV is playing good music, but to say that MTV isn't biased and people are making their own choices, in regards to their music purchases is a rather ignorant and dare I say (again), stupid statement. MTV caters to a certain type of music (namely Rap and bubble-gum-alternative). If you want people to make choices on their own, petition mtv to play everything there is to play.

Kids will buy what everyone else is listening to. Im sure there's some sociological study that will have data corroborating that. If not, use your common sense. You may feel that your initial music purchases were made of your own free will, and they might have been. I like to think that I made my own choices as well. But those that listen to Dream Theater have a stronger understanding and comprehension of complex music. My youngest brother was into Oasis for a number of years. If you ask him why, he would freely say because everyone else was.

Let's not chew someone's head off because he said that MTV isn't being fair about things. Because you and I know that MTV hasn't given all music a fair shake for quite some time. All right, so he said "Mind Controlled." Is that too far off the mark??? I wouldn't think so. MTV played an important part in shaping what popular music is today. That's close enough for me.

Um. No. This isn't *the* most ridiculous statement I've ever heard, but it's close. Hearing something 5,000,000 times does NOT equate with liking it; in my experience it's more likely to go the other way, in fact.

Case in point: years ago, when I was doing construction work during the summertime (a BAD idea if you live in GA as I do -- too damn hot) the other workers insisted on playing country music full-time. As a result I had to listen to nothing but country for eight hours a day, for three months. To this day the sound of most country music comes damn close to making me physically ill.

I don't hate all country music, but it's significant that very few of the singers or artists I *do* like weren't part of that summer's barrage. Saying that people will like something if they just listen to it enough times is flat-out wrong.

Does anyone know the story behind this one. I've not heard the original so I don't know the differences. It sounds much like a Kevmo/Tori colaboration. She must know about it, how did it come about, what does she think of it etc.....

    It completely rocks, obviously...

Going along with this commercial/MTV discussion,

I have an experiece that will make y'all really wonder. I work at Blockbuster video. In the store we have a tape that plays over TV's in the store. Music on it is typical MTV stuff-Sugar ray, Sixpence ..., Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys. You get the picture. This month the Ricky Martin Song is on it. For the past three nights I have been waking up in the middle of the night with it stuck in my head. I had to take Tylenol PM to get a full nights sleep last night. That is whole idea of "pop" music. It is supposed to have a simple beat with a refrain that gets stuck in your head. Most things on MTV do that. that is why DT isn't as popular as we would all like them to be. Most people have an attention span about as big as an ant. DT average seven minutes I would say, most would lose interest afetr about three. Another thing is that DT songs change beats, harmonis, tiem sigs A LOT. Someone on the mirror list said it best, that a normal person would get sort of sea-sick listening to DT. So where is this going. Give up on MTV. Don't listen to La Vida Loca 9 times in one day for 5 days strait. Enjoy our little secret known as DT.

So you're a free thinker. Big honkin' deal. Want a cookie? A lot of impressionable teens listen to pop music simply b/c it's pop music. I just graduated high school, I've been observing this shit for six years straight (jr high-high school). Some people listen to whatever's on the radio and nothing else. That's why the Backstreet Boys are popular. The record label hypes the shit out of the band, MTV and radio stations play it, voila instant success! I'm not shitting on anyone's musical tastes, I just have nothing but resentment for those people who claim to have a freewill but never exercise it. It starts with such simple things as music, but that is important. Bu then again, kids today are taught to not question things, never think. Sad. === *Trent

I regard DT (plus a few other bands) as being my personal stash of good tunes. It may sound kinda elitist, but I don't want them to be too popular b/c they might start to wear on my nerves. I love the band and everything, but I don't want to listen to them 24/7. I don't think I'm better than most people (unlike some others who listen to relatively unknown bands), I just enjoy the fact that DT's music is around when I want to hear it. I wouldn't imagine that tickets would be hard to come by, presuming they ever came to Houston. I like that.

As for your story, it does kinda suck, what happened to you. I would never work at a Blockbuster or Wherehouse or whatever the hell they call themselves these days for the reason you mentioned. === *Trent

I'm a recently converted DT fan, so I can be forgiven for just recently picking this album up (OIALT). This is the first DT album I've ever bought that I instantly loved. There's something so special about a live performance, and DT certainly deliver the goods in spades. I love this stuff!
