Speaking of DT converst, since everyone else is that is;> I think
I've converted so many people to this band its scary!:> Its probably to the
numbers of about 20-30. Its a chain, I convery someone and then they convert
someone else, its crazy;> Last concert, the x-mas one here in philly I
brought, 6 people with me, not bad, eh?:> At first I tried to force people
into liking them, now I just play them wherever I go so if people like them,
I tell them who they are, if they dont, I tell them something along the lines
of "F*ck you!" :> I'm nasty when it comes to DT:>

I'm just as elitist as anyone when it comes to music. But I'm with Korg as
always: you'll never make anyone like our music my throwing them on the
ground and giving them (noogies?). The best you can hope for is 'Yes it's
better than my music, but it doesn't do anything for me.' And I don't undo
the thumbscrews until I extract that confession, heh heh.

As for kids and free will: sure they'll have it eventually, that's what
maturity's all about. But someone help me with the names of these two
famous psychological tests they did in the US:

A child is brought into a room where there are six other children sitting
against the wall in a line (who, unknown to the subject, are insiders). The
child is shown a seat at the end of the line. The moderator tells the
children to count how many beats a metronome will make. He starts it and
lets it beat six times. He then asks the children in turn 'How many beats
did it make?' Each child in turn answers 'seven' until it's the subject's
turn. In around 80% of cases, the child also says 'seven'.

So imagine the scene in the playground:
    'Do you like Backstreet Boys?'
    'Yes'
    'Yes'
    'Yes'
    'Yes'
    'Yes'
    'Yes'
Guess what our hero says next...

The other test was about the students getting increasing electric shocks for
answering questions wrongly until they were writhing in pain. But on
reflection I don't think that's relevant to the discussion yet...

Actually it does present an interesting opportunity for a little
sociological experiment. Since we all know MTV doesn't have any sort of
monopoly on controlling minds, why not check this out:

Take 5YIAL and cue it up to one of tamer sections (heh) like when they
do the unplugged shiz, say Speak To Me. Patch the mother into all TVs
    within the store.

Now you'll want to take note of the sample customers in the store when
noting reactions. Were adolescant teenagers becoming moist? Were homies
using it as an opportunity to steal things? Did couples dressed for the
coming Armageddon take a sudden interest?

10:1 says your mind is blown at what you find out :)

Prediction: Old ladies will like it :)

    Amen brother!
Eric might not be in the class with Satch and Vai, meaning the genre,
but he surely kicks ass! First time I heard Eric was on G3 and I was
totally blown away by this guy! Wow. VERY interesting playing style and
    music.
And to be honest, Satch songs on the albums sucks except Cool #9, Vai is
good as always but Eric is such a refreshement!!!

Umm, yeah he is out of place. But I didn't wrote that I just started the
    original G3 question! :)
And I sai it again, I saw with my eyes in guitar magazine (although on
unkown language ;) that Marty Freedman is one possible choice for the
2-nd G3 thing! So where are they????

I don't know of any news of that manner of their sites, but I KNOW it's

I had written a articulate report on this whole MTV-brainwashing thing from a high-school student's perspective, but since I have AOL it ate it and it is gone now :-( Anyway, ill sum it up with this one conversation I had with a classmate when i brought my discman to school: Zombie: What's in the cd player? Me: Rush Zombie: I've never heard of that Me: its like 70's rock Zombie: Why don't you listen to new stuff for gods sake? Thats why you don't hear old stuff on the radio anymore. Get Korn or something.

I'll let you figure out the 600 things wrong with that.

P.S. Someone tried to insult me by calling me "David Lee Roth" today because I was in a music video with my band, we did a Rush cover on closed circuit tv in the school. Great idea huh? David Lee Roth... If anyone wants to talk with me, I have some fairly interesting stories that stem from that.

P.S.S. COuld someone PLEASE send me the link to the buy.com $10 off coupon thing? I was going to go buy something when i realized I lost it! It would be MUCH appreciated!

the original, if i'm thinking straight, was a Tori solo vocal job.....so just take away all the music from the piece, and you have the original version......

Kevmo's version wasn't some mutual collaboration; instead, he just added the backing instrumentation to the vocal track....

    Ouch! Honesty hurts!

In defense of the older DT videos, they were made quite awhile ago, so you might understand some of the "cheese".

    > Hollow Years - The band, a dude making out and various concerned people.

Now this one is more recent, but it is still very similar to the "Lie" video: Grey city, wet streets, James' face in the camera, etc. Hmm, I guess making a good video is a lot harder than we thought...

What you need in a video today is one thing: sex. You need to get a lot of good looking people up there in your face, shaking their bootys. The band isn't even in the videos anymore, unless they're doing some kind of synchronized dancing. Fireworks, massive computer effects, and filming in Las Vegas at night helps too. (I kinda liked that Monster Magnet video. What a way to work a bunch of hip-hop dancing girls into a metal video...)

On top of that, there's the whole style thing. You gotta film in $100 million dollar home, with lot's of glass, sparsely decorated with modern art. Gotta have the right clothes and the cars too. Being around the big swimming pool is a good trick. Helps you to work the sex angle back into the video. Maybe some kung-fu and mudwrestling. Mike Portnoy can kick the asses of 5 guys who look suspiciously like In-Sync or the Backstreet Boys. Fiona Apple can do some guest backing vocals and mud-wrestle with Petrucci. It'll be a hit!

Hopefully im not eating up too much bandwidth here but im re-posting this because i really do need help with this subject....with all the people here naming off different chords and their usage in popular songs i thought someone could answer this for me

    If no posts to this then i guess ill remain in the dark since i cant afford formal lessons ;{

    Heres the post:

"Personally (in keeping with the dark music thread) alot of my stuff is dissonant....and i wondered what defines dissonance. (two or more unison notes?)

Ive also read that many chords share the same notes and the only way to define their key is depending what immeaditely preceeds or follows it. WHAT??? when im using these "different" voicings i cant pin down where it originates....ive tried applying modal theory to dissect the chords but its kinda like ending up with multiple correct answers. Its like that 1 test question in school that you arrive at 2 answers and both are on the multiple choice.one is more correct.

Also do any of you have ideas as to how i can figure out what these chords are and what fits and whats illegal. Is that asking alot? i hope not cuz im lost!

I mean playing in the "pocket" is great but i want a lead sound that is as dissonant as the chords underneath. Im starting to master my delay unit and now im looking for the way to give my nylon-stringed peices (dissonant chords) the nod they deserve....the backing chords are so lonely and defining of the tune that i want the lead to compliment them and i cant tell one of these damned voicings from another.

    For ex. <7th fret D/6th fret G/open B and E...what is that?

    thanx in advance Outlander

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone else has VM's latest CD "The Maze". He's doing a clinic at Dave Phillips Music in Allentown this Thurs., and I've always wanted to check him out, so I figured I'd pick something up before I saw him. I know most other shred-heads on this list are probably a lot more familiar with his stuff than I am (I know he was one of the original "shred pioneers" in the 80's), so how does this compare to his older stuff? From what I've heard so far (the first half or so of the CD) he sounds like a cross between Wingnut (ying-wee!) and Vai, with of course his own sort of "flavor". But I like, very much. Any suggestions?

Also, pertaining to a few posts about LaBrie and his live performance: I may have posted about this before, but anyone who complains that his live work is not up to par with the studio stuff probably doesn't realize how tough it is to do what he does. As has been mentioned a million times, singing LIKE THAT for 3 hours every night for months on end has GOT to be tough. I haven't toured the world yet ;), so I wouldn't know, but I have a very similar voice, and it's hard enough to maintain sometimes as it is. Mad mad mad mad crazy silly amounts of respect to James. Kick ass, dude!

And THAT, ladies and gents, was DTC. =p

<< If you like the band, just continue to listen to it, and ignore the other fans opinions... You'll be happier. And the Internet will be faster. >>

This comment really struck me, because it was exactly true for me with Falling Into Infinity. You see, I bought Images and Words and Awake after hearing Burning My Soul on the radio, and at the time I was into Bush, and Green Day and not much else. Some parts on awake I dug right away (I would fast forward to the end of The Mirror to hear that ending), and the others I didn't listen to. In fact, I think it was over a month before I listened to all of Scarred, because the beginning didn't hook me. It's interesting that I was able to make such a tremendous shift, and one day I remarked to my friend: I LOVE DREAM THEATER!!! I shortly ordered Falling Into Infinity (finally coming to the point of this story), and had to take a few listens to absorb it all, but then loved it. I fucking loved it! I never thot about the format or anything until I read people here saying the commercial stuff about it. Once again, the point of this was supposed to be a response to: << If you like the band, just continue to listen to it, and ignore the other fans opinions... You'll be happier. And the Internet will be faster. >> I don't really get the internet comment though. By the way, SYMPHONY X is fucking fun to listen to!!

<< Anyway, I wanted to ask some jammers about chordal theory. ive been playing guitar for about 14 years and i feel ive got most diatonic modal theory down, but what confuses me is how some chords dont depend on a root to define the key.

I think you may be putting too much emphasis on the term "key". In diatonic harmony, chords and their respective roots can fit together to define a certain tonal environment- a "key"- but having a key isn't something you really *need* in harmonic analysis. If you're given a series of chords that don't fall into a particular key, just deal with each chord individually rather than try to group them into a key center. If you can't figure out what the chord itself is, try rearranging the notes so that you have as many thirds as possible.

    >>For ex. <7th fret D/6th fret G/open B and E...what is that?

Arranging the notes in thirds you get: E G B D- it's an Emin7/D chord. If you familiarize yourself with the spellings of chords, things like that will jump out at you almost immediately. A little memorization goes a *long* way with getting your musical head together.

<<Personally (in keeping with the dark music thread) alot of my stuff is dissonant....and i wondered what defines dissonance. (two or more unison notes?) >>

It all comes down to each persons ears and what they've been exposed to. Generally speaking, if a chord (or series of intervals) contains one or several small intervals (minor 2nd, major 2nd), the tritone (augmented 4th/ diminished 5th), or larger intervals (minor 7th, major 7th, minor 9th), many people would say it sounds "dissonant" as our ears have been conditioned to the "consonant" 3rds (and power chord 5ths :o)) which make up the majority of Western harmony in just about every style you can think of. In Traditional (Classical) voice leading, two or more unison notes would be "undesirable" and avoided in, say, chorale writing, but you hear it all the time in popular music. Nah- nothing wrong with unisons.

    >>Ive also read that many chords share the same notes and the only way to define their key is depending what immeaditely preceeds or follows it. WHAT???

Again, don't think of the key as being all-important. There are only so many notes that Western music uses- 12- and inevitably there will be instances when the same notes pop up but have different names attached to them. What you need to remember is that the *name* of the chord should reflect the *sound* of the chord. The sound of the chord should take into effect all of the instruments as well- many times the bass will give you the root of the chord right off the bat. Take for example the example you gave already- D G B E. It's an Emin7 chord with a D as the lowest register. It still *sounds* like an Emin7 chord, only it has D in the bass, so we still call it the same name. But if you put a different note in the bass- G- all of a sudden the chord sounds "brighter". Since minor chords don't normally sound "bright", it would make more sense to call this a Gmaj6 chord as you can build a major chord up from the G and tag on the 6th. The exact same notes, but the *sound* has changed- all because of the impact the bass note made on the rest of the notes. Never underestimate the importance of the bass. Viva la Myung!

As far as for chords that precede or follow a particular chord, yes this does help define what key the piece is in because any particular chord can appear in several different keys. In many cases, by looking at the central chord in context with other chords in the piece, the key is usually quite clear. The Emin7 chord you cited as an example can be found in 3 different major keys- C, G, and D. Looking at the other chords in the piece would give you one way to tell what key you would be in. Learn the harmonized scales in all keys (ie: build chords off of every note in the scale and learn them, damn you!). Once you do this and can recognize which chords are part of which keys, you'll be able to tell what key you're in at a glance. Patterns will start to jump out at you and you'll be loving life.

    >>when im using these "different" voicings i cant pin down where it originates....ive tried applying modal theory to dissect the chords but its kinda like ending up with multiple correct answers. Its like that 1 test question in school that you arrive at 2 answers and both are on the multiple choice.one is more correct. >>Also do any of you have ideas as to how i can figure out what these chords are and what fits and whats illegal.

Break the chords apart into raw notes. Rearrange the notes into thirds. Burn incense on the new moon and try to invoke the spirit of Nicholas Slonimsky and Walter Piston. Nothing is illegal- theory is a tool for understanding what we hear, not a set of rules to follow. The coolest part of theory- for myself anyway- is being able to hear something and knowing how and why it's happening. It doesn't TELL me what to hear or what to think- it simply allows me the insight to organize the sounds I hear into whatever capacity I choose. And to give me a reason to fill up tons of Ytsejam bandwidth...
