I had heard of Hoglan but never actually 'heard' him until
I picked up SYL-City and Infinity (one of Devy's solo
albums). This in turn has me thinking that I shall be
getting some Death albums soon. I really enjoy Hoglans
drumming on SYL-City and Infinity. His drumming on
Infinity really shows that Hoglan can play more than just
blasts beats and still get a really powerful sound from the
kit using just one kick. I can't wait to hear SYL3 which
is suppose to commence recording sometime this summer I
believe.

ripped-off by a ton of bands. S at least they didn't follow the trend at the
time, back when they're first album came out. But since then, they havent
stuck to their roots and now just sound like a typical "alterna-metal" band.

Korn might have been a great band (I fell in love with them after
they released their self titled "Korn"), but Follow the Leader was such a
sorry excuse for a CD that someone should have shot all of them before they
finsihed recording it:> Its such a total sellout that its worse then
Metallica. I've never seen anything so badly changed. How can you go from
hardcore with splitting 7 string riffs to fu*kin Ice Tea and Teeny Boppers???
God that pisses me off! I still love their first two releases though . . .

Most of that stuff only had a few horns that were served in moderation.
I'm looking for some modern stuff with a LOTS of horn action, not just an
occasional muted sax. Remember how horn heavy Earth Wind & Fire was?
I'd like to find some prog with that much horn support.

hi all,
Me and my band (it's called Dhaka) try with the horn sections as we intent to do
some fusion type of music. our style is 'defined' by our vocalist as
jazz-rock-'marfati' (Bangladeshi folk songs) fusion.Actually it is like all our
influences of sounds from our culture with the combination of western instruments.
We love to really experiment with the beats and styles.
while I was recording for our last album...we tried heavy distorted guitar riffs
running along with a horn section. But to mix them right was a real pain in the
butt as I would eat up the texture of the horns and all you could here was the high
registar saxs. if we put them too loud they would eat up the wormth of the
distortion and it would be a total mess. Can anyone give me some hint about the
mixing thing. I know in 'Another Day', DT had saxs but it was just the solo and if
you listen to it carefully, there is no distorted rhythm section so the mix was
good.

After reading this I checked my LTE disc at once. I checked all the timing=
exampls you gave and I found the same things as you did! I never realized
these noises before and you surely won=B4t if you don=B4t know that they a=

there, but if you know, they slightly disturb the atmosphere. I=B4d really=

know, why this occurs on the CD and if the guys have realized this
themselves.

As for the Iced Earth/Destiny's End/Division/Evil Dead Gangster
Droppings/Leaning Pizza Sprite Tower Records concert the other night, I must
say it was impressive. Sprite Power Tower or whatever they were opened up
with some muddy-as-hell, where-are-the-guitars old-school metal. They
probably were decent, but with that (lack of) soundboard skill, who could
tell? They finished up with a cover of Fate's "A Dangerous Meeting," an
undertaking smart vocalists avoid ;-) Gangster Lean-to was next, but I was
out in the lobby when I heard the dull rappish singing waft out like rotton
feta. I think it was around this time that I began to wonder what sort of
well-adjusted person would wear a t-shirt exhorting its readers to "FUCK
POSERS." I mean, where does one wear this? This is the sort of shirt Beavis
and Butthead would wear. Unfortunately it was an Iced Earth t-shirt. On the
other hand, I had nothing wise to say to the IE soundman, because he was
about 7' tall and doubled as a professional wrestler, no doubt. Next came
Division, who (which?) put on a typically energetic show. This was by far
the strongest crowd reaction they have ever received (in my experience) and
it's too bad loser Menser hasn't printed up some more copies of "Ascension to
Eternity," because it would have sold like hotcakes. A few too many covers
for my taste, but the set list was abbreviated. Next, following a $4 beer
and strong-arm come-ons from the club owner to buy his "excellent" food,
(digression: he said, "who would buy the food if it was no good?" -- well,
a captive audience that is not permitted to exit and re-enter the club,
perhaps?), was Destiny's End. I had heard only one song (because a certain
someone forgot to bring the disc a few months ago <wink>, but it sounded like
Helstar, a connection the band was not ashamed to exploit. They were tight,
if not a bit same-y. Finally it was Iced Earth time. They blew onto the
stage and immediately made me very glad I had brought along ear protection.
Loud! Crisp! The sound was outstanding. The vocals were dead-on. I must
be getting old, because as good as they were, I was wanting them to hurry up
because knees and feet and backs were aching from the long night. I guess I
should stop using little girls as bean bag chairs. Iced Earth were just
splendid, and I wouldn't mind it a bit if they were to issue a live album.
Division should steal the Iced Earth's drum kit. Now that's what a snare
drum is supposed to sound like!

Although not really horn BASED per se (nor prog.), Oingo Boingo has an
EXCELLENT horn section. They were big in the 80's, but most of the stuff
they did then didn't really have that "80's sound". They were together
until '95, although you best be warned: anything on albums where the band
is simply called "Boingo" has no horn section (they had a falling out, but
got back together for the farewell concert)

I was far from bent. I thought I was actually pretty fair and neutral with my
answer. The crack about AC/DC was just to point out how ridiculous his
statement was about Lit Up being a KISS rip off. Trust me, I get ticked too
when DT doesn't get the exposure they deserve, but it's usually the audience,
not the radio station that's at fault. I'm lucky to have not one, but two
major hard rock stations here in Minnesota, and every so often I'll call up
and request some DT and they'll actually play it. But obviously the feedback
the station gets when they play a DT song and when they play a catchy "radio"
rock single is different. More than likely the "catchy" tune is going to be
requested much more, therefore played much more. So I can't exactly blame
some stations, because they do play DT. But if the idiots listening aren't
smart enough to call back when DT is on and request more of it, the station
isn't going to play more of it. It's not always the stations fault. Face it,
DT is still "underground", and as long as I can still get them on the radio
every once in awhile, I'm happy. I'm not sure I'd want them to explode like
Metallica did. But I wish them all of the success they definitely deserve.

it happened during mix oder mastering. Sometimes engineers overdo it with
the gain level just because it has to be LOUD. The result is clipped and
oversampled digital audio. FII could have sounded even better if they
wouldn't have cranked the gain button so much. Lot of oversampling there...

Oversampling? So does that mean my CD player, which says "8x Oversampling"
on the front panel, is making everything loud so it will sound better?
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Can you explain this to me please?
