I'm not sure if DT still make videos and/or singles,
but if they do, I have to wonder why. I mean, it's a
kinda forgone conclusion that it won't get radio play.
I know PMU was moderately successful, but history has
proven that to be the exception, not the rule. Let's
face it, DT won't ever get large amounts of radio
    play. I can't say I'm dis-content with that b/c it's
like DT is my personal stash.

Hi. Yesterday night, I ordered a copy of ACOS in CD Now (birthday gift
for a friend), and to my surprise, it's backordered! So was Images and
Words. I went to CD Universe, and both items were also in backorder.

Does anyone know wether there are some troubles in EastWest
    distribution?

Actually, the song you heard is called "Get Born Again", I like it too :) and it is one of 2 new songs (the other called "Died") which will appear on the upcoming boxset "Music Bank" scheduled for a release in September. It will contain 3 CDS- a combo of new, live, unreleased, and demo material, as well as the AIC classics.....

I guess that the other jammers present at this show have been too busy (like me) to post a review on Ytsejam, though Jakov (volodya) has posted on TEOF, so I'll throw in a short review, for what its worth.

Excellent Bill - Freedom Call, Misanthrope, Edguy, Vanden Plas, Gamma Ray, Dimmu Borgir (??????) and Angra for about 30$US. OK so there were two Death/Black Metal Bands in there (Misanthrope and Dimmu), but the rest were eminently listenable and had D C Copper not been fired, Royal Hunt would have been on the bill, so no complaints from me on the value for money point of view. OK, so it was a medium sized arena (4000 capacity) in the suburbs of Paris, but it was easy enough to find and no sooner had I walked in than I was bumping in Jammers and guys from the Angra list, so it was all set for a real party.

I arrived in the middle of Misanthrope's set, so I completely missed Freedom Call. For a black metal band they sounded interesting even if they were a bit loud and the sound system hadn't been fully sorted out. Edguy played a decent set of melodic/symphonic sort of speed-metal, but as it was the first time I'd heard more than a few tracks of their stuff I wasn't over-impressed.

Of course I wanted to see Angra (again), but the deciding factor in me making the trip from London was the presence of Vanden Plas, especially as I was hoping to pick up their new single and hear some of the material from the new album. Given that it was a festival and the bands followed quickly on each others heels, they only got to play for about 45-50 minutes, (in fact I've never seen them play for any longer than that). The layout on stage seemed to be slightly different with Gunter getting a riser which made him mush more prominent on stage. His keys were also more prominent, particularly in a slightly modified 'Rainmaker' which started the set. All of the guys seemed really pleased by the crowd reaction and appeared really pumped up. Andy and Stephan Lill moved around a great deal and Andy's voice was in great form. After 'Soul Survives' Andy announced that they would play their new single 'Inside of your Head' (due for release in May, but put back to June for reasons which I'm not yet party to). Very much in their usual style, I can't really say any more.

Next up Andy announce that he wanted the crowd to sing along with the next number - 'How Many Tears', but finding the crowd a little reluctant to join in, he switched to singing the French version of the song part way through, which elicited a much bigger response. Then it was time to play another track from the upcoming single - a Dokken cover 'Kiss of Death', which Stephan Lill certainly seemed to enjoy himself playing. After that there was just time for a final number 'You Fly' - again with plenty of crowd participation and then they were gone. I certainly enjoyed their set, but would love to hear a few more new numbers (jealous snarl towards certain members of this list), but given the slot they had, It made sense to mix songs from the single with the more popular of their songs.

Before leaving Andy confirmed that they would be back in September to tour following the release of the new album. The full setlist was as follows:

    1. Intro/Rainmaker 2. Soul Survives 3. Inside Of Your Head 4. How Many Tears/Combien des larmes 5. Kiss Of Death 6. You Fly

Oh, and did Ties remind you all that he has now set-up a VP mailing list - we could do with a few more faces, so go to Ties site (now the official VP website) and sign up!

With no Royal Hunt, the next up was Gamma Ray, who played a set of just over an hour in length. They play a sort of metal that leaves me totally unaffected - I neither like or dislike it particularly and as I only knew two songs: the Pet Shop Boys cover 'Its a Sin' and 'Into the Valley of the Kings', I didn't get a lot out of the experience.

Dimmu Borgir was the band I could have done without. If only Hansi hadn't damaged his hearing, we could have had Blind Guardian instead, but instead we got a bunch of Norwegian Black Metallers (plus a Brit). Time for me and many others to go to the bar and buffet, but unfortunately there was no getting away from the terrible racket that they were playing, due to the open nature of the venue. Sole respite from this was the 2 minutes or so when the Bassist sang in place of Shagrath - now if he could just replace the lead-singer permanently, they might make a sound that was interesting enough to listen to.

Finally it was Angra, who played a set very similar to that which they played when I caught them in January (at Strasbourg and Paris). It was OK, but not the best show I've seen them play. The audience loved them, especially when they played 'Painkiller' as an encore, but the rumoured 'special guest appearances' didn't happen this time, so the end was a bit anti-climatic for me.

The following day at Lille I saw Freedom Call, Edguy and Angra all play what were for me far better sets in a small venue in front of about 4 or 500 hundred people. And if you like Angra, the other two bands are worth checking out too.

    Edguy: http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/nevermind/790/

Freedom Call: http://perso.infonie.fr/gammaray/Pages/Secret.html (its in French), but just follow the Freedom Call icon to get to the soundclips

Oh and do pay a visit to http://www.vandenplas.de/ - The Web Thing. After all they'll be some interesting news soon, won't there, Ties??? :-))

My friend and fellow 'jammer Josh Calkin told me about a local radio station (for him) out of Albany, NY, that broadcasts Howard Stern. I checked out their webiste (www.wqbk.com) and lo and behold, they had a "Broadcast.com" button at the bottom! I clicked on it and was brought to the following page:

    http://www.broadcast.com/radio/alternative/WQBK/

At which they have a link to an Internet Broadcast in RealAudio. Since I have received additional requests for information about this, I am forwarding it to the jam so others may enjoy the witty cynicism of Howard Stern. By the way, he broadcasts from 6 AM Eastern until whenever he wants to.

    Stay cool, all.

yeah, it's great! a little poppy, but really great.

    >A soldier MUST follow orders from his superior officers. And there's no

    >excuse for that! The "logical" explanation for this is "In war time, you >follow orders or you die! In army there must be rules which need to be >100% obeyed!"

Cyberpuke(sorry, couldn't resist. just kidding, bro!), didn't you see the END of A Few Good Men?

Your point is almost mostly true, but, at least in this country, a soldier can and should disobey his orders if they are unconstitutional. I mean, you just can't go ordering a private to double-time to the mall and gun down all the women and children, can you?

BTW, I don't think this relates to the original thread anymore - just an interesting aside.

    >(I find that I get less frivlous as I >mature. The CD was the Dead Man Walking score). The >employee behind the counter informed me that the store >can no longer play a CD before being purchases,

Amazon.com has 30 second RA's of usually at least the first five tracks of almost all the albums they sell, which is a lot. I go there often to sampe stuff. And, they have a cool cross-referencing system: you check out a DT album, and at the bottom of the page is a list of other music by that artist, and a list of similar artists. you can wind up clicking around all night.

I think Music Boulevard also has something like this.

and now, since it's become so fashionable:

Al? I got a honda del sol. decent stock sound, but my leg covers the left front speaker. it makes a huge difference. suggestions?

    thanks

    Hello,

If anyone is curious as to which Spock's disc would be a good initial purchase - I put my vote in for Kindness Of Strangers. That's the first disc I got and was captivated to say the least right from the moment I heard that epic, pseudo-classical groove riff from track one - 'The Good Don't Last'. Every track in this disc is a gem (though Strange World leaves a bit to be desired for me) and won't dissapoint anyone who's gonna ultimately end up liking Spock's (i.e. if you don't like KOS, then you won't like any other releases - I may get some disagreement here, but I still think it's a pretty safe assumption to make). On the other hand, discs like Beware Of Darkness or The Light are a little more obscure and less concise than KOS, and may prove to be a stumbling point for a potential Spock initiate. I feel that KOS is a excellent, accessible, yet still-very-much-prog showcase of these guy's talent and ability. Once KOS is purchased (yes, *purchased*, not CD-R'ed or downloaded) it will open the door for the need to buy their entire discog. It did with me anyway....

In addition, the new disc, Day For Night, is absolutely brilliant, would also be a good starting disc if it was more convenient to get a hold of than KOS.

Re: Korn. No, IMHO definately NOT prog. Though their drummer does have some chops and stands far superior over any of the MTV competition that Korn have been lumped in with. Whether he is deserved of a place in the Prog Poll, well that depends on who he beat to snare the #5 position.... but he IS a good drummer and well worthy of the exposure he is currently receiving.

Also on the topic of Korn, I feel that the general concensus of the Jam is a little to hard on these guys. Sure, they definately don't stand up to likes of some of the more regularly mentioned acts here, but in the sea of shite that is the commercial scene, at least their is a band with some artistic integrity AND talent (there are others, but, you know.....). I actually like Korn and would even go as far as say that I have enjoyed songs of theirs (across their 3 releases) more so than albums I have received recommendations to check out from the Jam, such as Shadow Gallery's Carved In Stone and Lemur Voice's Insights.

I have a friend who loves Korn. It's through these guys that he ended up ditching his old interests in Australian punk trash like Jebediah, Frenzal Rhomb and Grinspoon. Korn just seemed to give him a little more of an open-minded approach to identifying quality musicianmanship and from here, I introduced him to DT. It took a while (as it does) but with in a few listens to Awake and Portnoy's drum solo from LiT, he soon was converted. He started drum lessons and soon after bought Awake and 5YIAL. He still like his Korn, but it makes me feel all nice 'n' gussy inside when he tells me how his friends always whinge when he cranks Awake in his car and he just tells 'em to 'F*** OFF'. :) Notch up another Australian convert!

    Luke.

    Hey Trent -

I don't know of any sites that have full MP3's for each of the bands you mentioned, but you can get at least MP3 samples (and in some cases full MP3 songs) from the bands' respective official web sites:

    http://www.shadowgallery.com http://www.icedearth.com http://www.spocksbeard.net (Don't know about a SymphX site?)

Another thing you may wanna try is a wicked MP3 search engine I discovered while at work. I'm afraid to try it here at home because of my shitty computer and snail's-pace internet connection, but at work, I was able to type in a band name, and it ran the string through a huge list of MP3 search engines, opening a new window for every search engine site. If you're inclined to give it a try, I would imagine that you'd be able to find SOMETHING out there for each of the bands you want. Hopefully, the link is still good:

Anyway, I hope this helps.... Matt T.

And what about Blood, Sweat and Tears, a VERY jazzy Rock Fusion band that was really big in the 70's, Tower of Power is also great, and uses a lot of Baritone Sax work in it too, but they're more funk-oriented(which I love) than say Steely Dan or BS&T...Also, for prog stuff, The Alan Parsons project uses a lot of horn work in their music, and of course you can always find some sax solos in Pink Floyd...:) I collect music with horns in it, hell, I collect music period, but I'm always on the lookout for more horn-based music..:)
