didn't realize Olivia Tremor Control were in any way prog-like....
first heard about these guys when trying to review another of those Georgia
bands (Keith Barnes/Of Montreal)......and when OTC came through Detroit, I
could have went, but figured they were, like Barnes, a novelty act of
    sorts....

Any more detail about OTC would be appreciated, paul.

    A clarification:

About as progressive as many things get these days without venturing into
the realm of prog-metal. Not so much in terms of dizzying time sig
changes, but more in terms of the structured, dense arrangements. They
will never be played on popular radio.

They feature members of the Elephant 6 Collective who also appear on the
Neutral Milk Hotel albums. I only discovered them rather recently, and
they've been in constant rotation since.

    Hey again folks...

Welp, the FTP server test was successful so I'm going to go ahead and
expand the site a little bit. Currently up are Queensryche's 4/29/95
Milwaukee show at the Mecca Arena and I've just added Dream Theater's
5/9/98 show in Philadelphia's Electric Factory. Next up in a few days is
Dream Theater's 12/17/97 show in Atlanta. Here's the info:

    Anonymous FTP to 24.5.106.175

    Artist: Dream Theater
    Date: 5/9/98
    Loc: Philadelphia (Electric Factory)

    Quality: A/A-

    Notes:

This is an excellent performance (with great sound to boot) of Dream
Theater in the 2nd American leg of the Falling Into Infinity tour. I'm
partial towards this show because I travelled from Atlanta to Philly and
back in a weekend to see it. (Worth every minute, too). One highlight of
this show is James' vocals, especially on Lie, the encores, and, most
impressively, Trial of Tears. Other highlights include pretty much all of
Lines in the Sand (esp the keys solo at the beginning), and Take the Time
with Freebird and Hot for Teacher outros. Finally, this one includes the
B-side Speak to Me, which was rarely played until this point in the
tour. Enjoy, and feedback on the show or FTP site is always appreciated.

    Hey,
What's the funniest situation in life you have been able to apply DT
    lyrics to?
Here's mine: I worked at Arby's a while ago. A friend and I were singing
metal songs to go with the work (ex-I was dropping fries in a fryer and
was sing Metallica's Jump in the Fire as "Jump in the Fryer" that sort of
playing with lyrics. Later that night I spilled grease onto the floor, and
it burned the treads right off the bottom of my shoes. I looked at him,
and all I could say is "Burning My Sole" :)

i was pissin in my pants........Sat right in front of Virgil to check out his

    WOO HOO!

    > to date, there is scant little info as to how the DT album is coming
    > along/turning out, other than MP's comments

Those words he said are worth volumes, though.

Anyways, the lack of info has kept the speculation on the jam to a
minimum. This is a good thing. Remember all those posts before FII came
out, and then all the post-release bitching about how the demo this was
better than the official that. And then the predictors of doom who
feared that FII was the turning point where DT left 'prog' behind. You
know, like at 3:21 on JLMB? :)))

Mike answered THE burning question that I would think most everyone has
been thinking about at one time or another: Whither the 'prog' in DT? I
think NOT! I got yer prog right here boyeeeeeeeeeeee! Only you can't
    have it just yet :)

    > i do know one thing I'll be wondering about once the disc does finally
    > come out: how would it have been different with Derek Sherinian on
    > board.....

    Oh joy, oh rapture :)

Yes, it's going to be inevitable, the flame wars and such that will
result from all permutations and combinations of Jordan, Derek and
Kevin. One can only hope that it won't completely dominate the jam, but
leave some room for talk about how great an album the next one will be.
Not because it's Jordan and not Derek, but just because it's DREAM
    THEATER!!!!

    >Slayers stuff is straight forward and IMO very different from Dark Angel

Never heard "We have arrived" and have no desire to. Never checked the
dates, but to ME, I repeat, to ME, it sounds boring now. I cant tolerate
most of Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits for that reason. BORING!!! Plus, I
never thought Dark Angel lyrics were their strength, too much "trying to
sound intelligent, too bad I have nothing useful to say" stuff. In my mind,
the originators of death metal are Death, and even Scream Bloody Gore
sounds better to me than something like Darkness Descends. =)

    >Do you work for MTV?? ;> just kidding

No, but I am working against eMpTyV... =)

    >blaze bayley utterly sucks....got virtual XI, and thhe album is soooooo
    >ridiculously lifeless....threw in piece of mind afterwards, and the
    >difference is staggering.....

I don't think it's just Blaze Bayley, I think it's the whole band that
sounds washed up on that one... but Bayley does suck indeed. How about that
out of the blue "Dont look in the eyes of a stranger" ending where he
doesn't even say it in time with the music. Sounds like something a typical
    inexperienced garage band would do.

    >Reinert's playing on Human. One is his execution. It's very smooth and

That it is.... Amazingly clean performance!

    >notes for Symbolic, along with something about a "M-14 propeller" or some
    >shit like that. Haven't a clue what they are. Which tracks does he use
    >them on?

Cannon shells are M-14 cannon shells, exactly what they are, and the
propeller is an old boat propeller that some friend of his gave him as a
joke, and he decided to use it cause it sounds good. His quote is "Hell,
I'll play a car door if it sounds good". He uses it throughout most tracks
of Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic. And they sound like ride
cymbals. Those times when it sounds like he does fills with dual ride
cymbals, thats the propeller and shells.. =) they DO sound kickass.

    >grabbed me about Donati's playing in the Planet X show. Anyway, Christy

    >there's a note off here and there. Those are the only types of mistakes
    >I've been able to catch, though. Anything else I'm missing?

Christy is not PERFECT. He is very technical, but sometimes he can't pull
off his licks in 100% accuracy. Understandable, cause they are amazing.
Still, better than Ulrich barely being able to play his double bass part on
"One" =) In his own quote "My 3 yr old son can play better than that, and
    I don't even have a son".

    >Have you heard Leave Scars? It's the one between Darkness Desccends and

Heard it once... =) ok. Insane drumming, but that's about it. That's all
that Dark Angel was good for, in my opinion, anyway. Which makes it worth
it for me.. =) But I didn't like Scars much. Not to mention a destroyed
version of Zep's Immigrant Song!!!! =) LOL

    Hi!

Ok... now we got the last mp3 of the acoustic tour up.
It's "I go to extremes" (Billy Joel) played at the same gig as the
others on our tour in February.

I would like to make all the mp3's available soon but I have to find
a server for that. Maybe I will use Mosh's but that's not sure yet.
    Any ideas?

Next thing I will offer on our page at http://www.free-minded.de/
will be recordings of a gig that we did 3 weeks ago on a festival in
France. And no, these are no acoustic songs this time. It's heavy and
    it kicks. :)

I'll tell you when these things will be up.

    hi all,

while we are on the subject of drummers, I know that MP had to use some kind of
trigger for I&W and he really did not like it. I was really surprised to hear the
type of snare sound he got on ACOS. but, the live tunes had a different sound
again. On FII I think he used different snares for different songs. Since I never
been to a DT concert, does he use just one set of snare for all the songs or does
he change them in between tracks? anyone?
also, in the OILT drum solo, from the drummers perspective, it is a very good
solo??? I recognized 6.00 part but the others I don't know. how does he structure
    them?

another drummer I really like is Scott Rockenfield of QueensRyche. he was
    fantastic on mindcrime.
One more thing from Once in a live time, how come there were no Myung solo?? or is
it just one of those different printing for different countrys thing that has some
stuff where as the other have something else. I really hate when record companies
    do that.

Is there any chance of DT releasing a B-side thing in near future??
