    hmm...my funniest ?

ok. i was rehearsing with my band one day, and we were listening to Jimi
hendrix's "Fire"...and i was jamming along to the bass line..and all of a
sudden a string pops...and everybody goes " oh...she'll sing "Another Day"
now " ( the string has been used so many times, and we call her recurring
big bertha , and big bertha is our most expensive contra bass ( 18 grand )
)...now i know that they all ahve asked me in previous times " who the heck
is dream theater ? " and i go..." give me a sec to remember " and i put on
IAW into our cd player, and the lead guitarist started singing along! beyond
shock..but they still dont understand why i was laughing...

    >'Never come near me again \
    >Do you really think I need you'

It may have been that those were KevMo's thoughts toward the band but I
think that song was the product of a failed relationship. If you'd notice
in the liners of I&W, he thanks someone very close to him. I think she was
the inspiration for Surrounded, actually. In the Awake liners, she isn't
mentioned. I believe that Surrounded and Space-Dyed Vest were written about
that same person. I don't have the liners here at work, but if you look you
ought to see what I mean, I think. It's been a looooong time since I drew
    that conclusion.

    Note the lyrics:
    'Now that you're gone I'm trying to take it;
    Learning to swallow the rage.
Found a new girl; I think we can make it
As long as she stays on the page.'

Later in Chromakey we get the line:
'Life is so much cleaner on the page.'

Sounds like he's unwilling to strike up a new relationship.
I'll let you take it from there.

<<while we are on the subject of drummers, I know that MP had to use some kind of trigger for I&W and he really did not like it. I was really surprised to hear the type of snare sound he got on ACOS. but, the live tunes had a different sound again. On FII I think he used different snares for different songs. Since I never been to a DT concert, does he use just one set of snare for all the songs or does he change them in between tracks? anyone? also, in the OILT drum solo, from the drummers perspective, it is a very good solo??? I recognized 6.00 part but the others I don't know. how does he structure them?>>

This question was asked at a recent Portnoy/Petrucci clinic i went to. MP has a special foot controlled snare with three different settings. he explained the snare to us. its basically a foot pedal with three options for snare sounds. He also said in different recordings he has used the Majesty kit too. like for Hollow Years or the slower parts in Peruvian Skies Chris

Dude, Kev was writing that about some unnamed girl who he had just been dumped by. He has admitted this. READ THE FAQ! Everyone thinks that 6:00, and SDV are about Kev and DT but the explanations that Kev gave were exactly what I got out of the songs the first time I listened to them.

The girl in Surrounded is in Kev's own words a girl he knew who had no spiritual center. Whether it's the same girl or not is open to question. If you're looking for a connection with SDV I think it's better to look toward Lie than SDV.. I have always found those two songs somewhat of a mystery, as it's clear that KevMo's thoughts and lyrics are much darker on that album than on I&W. I always thought it seemed to be the end of relationship that caused it.. and I think that change in attitude may have been one of the factors in him leaving DT. Anyway also check out the lyrics to Chroma Key's blanket (I buried me wife and I dance on top of her).. VERY eye opening.

    > >Note the lyrics: >'Now that you're gone I'm trying to take it; >Learning to swallow the rage. >Found a new girl; I think we can make it >As long as she stays on the page.' >

    >Later in Chromakey we get the line: >'Life is so much cleaner on the page.'

You're stretchin here... I think the On the Page lyrics are pretty straightforward as to what it's about.. life is easier when you imagine what you're going to do but it never quite comes out like that in reality. This fantasy vs. reality theme is something that Kev has been dealing with quite often since leaving DT.. almost every Chroma Key song I've heard has dealt with it in one way or another...

    Just a question:

This may have been on the jam before or countless other places, but im relatively new to digests so here goes.

If you could list 10 albums(in random order to ease the effort) that you think are the all-time best (any genre at all) i think that would be really cool since being on this list ive purchased 3 cds solely on suggestion of jammers.(and if you could use the bands full names and not abbrev. since some have never heard them before) and its hard to ask the record store guy for ACoS by DT ;>

And since i'm about to dramatically increase my collection I want more ;>

    mine are: BANDS

1.AWAKE by Dream Theater 2.OPERATION:MINDCRIME by Queensryche 3.POWERSLAVE by Iron Maiden 4.ABIGAIL by King Diamond 5.NOSFERATU by Helstar

SOLOISTS 6.MAXIMUM SECURITY by Tony MacAlpine 7.SURFING WITH THE ALIEN by Joe Satriani 8.PASSION AND WARFARE by Steve Vai 9.ELEGANT GYPSY by Al DiMeola 10.AH VIA MUSICOM by Eric Johnson

SO I GUESS, IF YOU'RE BORED THROW YOUR FAVS UP SO I CAN RUN OUT AND GET THEM....AND BTW THIS IS A CHANCE FOR YOU TO GET ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR YOUR FAVORITE BANDS AS I AM PLANNING ON SPENDING SOMEWHERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF $900.00

    THANX Outlander

I can't say that >either is better, but I honestly prefer Awake's production over FII's.

I gotta agree with KorgX3 on this one all the way :)

AWAKE is their best to date IMO....is Metropolis pt.2 gonna be on this cd?...and one more thing is the stretched out version of Met. 1 on OIAL really a taste of Met 2?....or did i miss a demo/mp3 or something....i was jamming along to Met1 when i got OiaL and it really caught me off guard ;>

    >< On FII I think he used different snares for different songs. Since I never been to a DT concert, does he use just one set of snare for all the songs or does he change them in between tracks? ><

He has (invented?) some pedal that allows him to change the strainer tension w/o using his hands. This explains the different snare sounds on FII. I never noticed different snare sounds during shows, but it's all one drum.

I can kinda understand the rule. If people want to read about other people's tastes in music, someone can put it on their website. It doesn't absolutely have to be on the 'jam. === *Trent

I can understand it too, not everyone wants to read it, but everyone posts album reviews to the jam and everyone mentions a certain CD that is worth buying. Doing something like "top 10 best" is basically the same thing in condensed form.

Yo, SDV was actually written to a girl which he had a very hard break up with. Maybe it did have a double meaning. It's kinda similar to "all I want" on QR's HITNF. That song kinda foreshdowed Chris's departure.

I think the difference is that a review of a CD spawns discussion. A top 10 list spawns only other top 10 lists.

DTC- I'm listening to "Peruvian Skies". I like this song. It kinda showcases a different aspects of LaBrie's voice in places. MP is playing very well too (not that he ever plays badly or anything :o) ) === *Trent
