Punter usually refers to the consumer of a product ie. the paying customer. In the
case that you mention it is probably just another reference to the fans.

    Hey,

    ]From Gilberto:
    >Iron Maiden has just annouced the producer for their new album...
    >Kevin Shirley

You know what this means don't you....they might have a good production with
a great drum sound for once... I never understood why IM always played in a
    thick cardboard box when recording...

I got my copy of CK "This is a Recording" in the mail (signed if you don't
mind) and it completely rules, I was also pleasently suprised with Platypus.
After the first song (which could have been on KX - Tape Head) it grooves,
funks and rocks and rolls...Love it.

Did anyone read Dereks response to being voted #1 Keyboard Player in Metal
Edge (it's on his web page). A little cheeky, and quite rightly so. Why
didn't he play on FII like he did on Platypus...? I can't wait for Planet X.

    Whatever....

Cool. He needs to get Dream Theater an Iron Maiden support slot sometime
soon, especially since Maiden have just started selling out huge arenas
again after a few years in the doldrums.

You know what would be cool? For three of his solo albums, Bruce Dickinson
has "kidnapped" the band Tribe of Gypsies (apart from the singer) to act
as his backing band, and his Maiden cohort Adrian Smith has helped with
guitar duties on the last two. It's been a very fruitful collaboration.

So, it would be cool if Bruce would kidnap DT for an album. How about
Bruce Dickinson, Adrian Smith, John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, and John Myung
for the world's greatest ever metal album ever in the entire world ever?
Dickinson's obviously a bit of a DT fan anyway, and DT are more than
capable of pulling off a Maiden cover when they need to. :-)

I don't know if anyone out there digs the Allman Brothers, but just in case anyone's going to see them in St. Louis next Tuesday (June 15), I'll be there. My roommate and I just won tickets yesterday. If anyone is going and sees anyone wearing a DT shirt, it's probably me. I also just heard on the radio that Deen Castronovo is playing with Journey now. That would actually make me somewhat interested in seeing them. Oh yeah, and, in case anyone's going to see Bela Fleck and the Flecktones tomorrow (Friday June 11) in Columbia, MO, I'll be there, too.

Any reviews on the new IN FLAMES and LACUNA COIL?? I am waiting to pick them up. They both should kick ass. For anyone not familiar with LACUNA COIL, they are similar to the GATHERING but are much better, in that their songs are faster and not as boring. They have cool interplays between male and female vocals, with the girl singing most of the time.

New Queensryche huh? Their last album was the WORST FUCKING ALBUM I HAVE EVER HEARD. Hard to believe it was the same band that wrote the masterpiece known as 'mindcrime'

When do MAIDEN tickets go on sale for California, LA tickets were suppossed to go on sale but they were pulled at the last second.

I hope the new DT album gets back to their METAL roots.

I see POISON,RATT,GW,LAG next week in Hollywood at the Universal Amph. There should be plenty of sluty chicks and porn stars there. If they guy who saw the two chicks almost naked for the last show, he should be blown away at this one.

i went over there the other day after the news was first posted, and was kind of puzzled by the language that was there in the latest news section.....

"We'd also like to confirm that Atlantic Records has indeed been chosen as the bands new recording label"

has been chosen? you mean, queensryche chose atlantic records? you mean they had a choice? I know that their previous label folded, and that's why they left, rather than being bounced due to poor sales or leaving for lack of support (a la Kings X)......

I guess i should be happy that this band retains enough clout/viability to get picked up by a major label....then again, for some reason, there's a nagging thought in the back of my head that maybe the reason they got picked up was because atlantic thinks they can sell to a radio audience that "we" mercifully flog.....

(don't mind me, a frustrating day is coloring my commentary negatively...and I AM looking forward to Q2K, despite the name.....the art is really nice, check it out already....)

This is the information that CDnow has...

Liquid Tension Experiment : Vol. 2-Liquid Tension Experiment (CD) *** Advance Order: Expected Release Date Jun. 15, 1999

Of course if you pre-ordered it from CDnow, chances are that it will be on backorder just like Dali's Dilemma was. It only took an additional 3 days to get the cd, but still... am I wrong to expect something that I "pre-order" to actually be in stock?

    Hi!

    Gentle Giant:

Well, Syrinx, everyone interested in Gentle Giant should check the official website

    http://www.blazemonger.com/GG/

And no, the 3 CD-box is not out yet. Too bad they don't simply reissue the complete albums in top quality instead.

    Oversampling:

It doesn't have anything to do with my preamp or something, when I look (!) at the digital data on a CD and see the waveforms cut off, then someone simply overdid it. That's a common problem with commercial/popular music. If you want your music to stand out when it is played on radio, you have to ensure that it is *loud* enough. So you, or your producer/engineer/whoever, compress it to death just to be able to crank up the gain.

That's what happened to FII, it's very loud and there is a lot of oversampling. Overall I like the production, I'd like a bit more treble, but that's a matter of taste. But these pure technical flaws really disturb me, because those are unneccessary in my opinion. Maybe they could have needed one more week back then, maybe there was someone else working on the mastering who messed it up, I don't know. I still prefer the production (I'm talking about sound here, not the work on songs/arrangements) of Awake. It has this unbelievable crispness I always wanted in a studio recording but still has a lot of live power in it. It is produced, but not overproduced, and is technically nearly flawless. I could listen to this in-your-face-drumroll from 6:00 over and over again.

BTW, there is a website where you can hear this drumroll as a small sample. Actually that's all there is. 10 points for the first to guess the URL. ;-)

Saw that one too late, Rick Audet wrote:

    >Oversampling? So does that mean my CD player, which says "8x Oversampling" >on the front panel, is making everything loud so it will sound better? Is >this a good thing or a bad thing? Can you explain this to me please?

Well, the actual oversampling I meant is what happens when you try to convert an analog signal into digital audio, but the analog signal is too loud. The CD audio we all know has a resolution of 16 bit, so your analog signal will be converted (sampled) into some numbers between -32768 and 32767. Now you got a very loud bass drum, and the signal is so loud that the correct numbers would be more in the -50K to 50K range. Digital is ON or OFF, true or false, good or bad, so all values over 32K get 'clipped', and everything that doesn't fit into the space of -32K to 32K will be lost. That's the problem, in the analog world you'd get some light distortion, in the digital world you get crap.

Sometimes I wondered why some CDs sounded so weird, and after looking at the waveforms I often saw clipped waves. You don't hear it immediately like a click or static noise, it just feels weird.

The 8x oversampling on your CD player is something totally different, that has something to do with interpolating values between samples found on the CD to get additional values to increase the sampling rate and thus making the resulting analog wave forms smoother. Or something. I actually never really cared ;-))

I personally think its got the worst guitar sound out of any of DT's releases, you can barely hear it! It hardly ever cuts through and the notes, I find, have very little defenition (not something you'd want when you're playing as fast as Petrucci does). LTE, on the other hand, has a great guitar sound where you can actually hear the seperation of the notes. FII just sounds like mush to me. Although my all time favorite guitar sound that Petrucci has ever gotten has been on I&W, LiT, and LatM.

Why is it like that? Why the hostility, not just from you Calvin, but in general, against people who like things the way they were? Sure, derek's great, sure jordan's great, they're both great, the band is the greatest, it's great, great, great!
