I happened to be listening to JLMB in my headphones (which I do every
night, when I need to be quiet), and I noticed that at the beginning of
the song, there's a shaker going (I'm assuming it's KJLB playing it)
while the timbalitos or tom-toms or whatever is going on in MP's part.
Anyway, I noticed that the shaker is WAY off, rhythmically. Has anybody
else noticed this? It actually THREW my rhythm off while I was listening
to it - if I listened to the shaker as the main part, I had trouble
finding the beat - the other parts sounded like THEY were off.
Just pointing it out, I don't remember hearing about it before.

I am SO with you. I'll even go as far as to say that they could have
(should have?) changed the name when Kevin left. That is not to say that I
think Kevin was the whole band... but that special sound that set Dream
Theater apart from the pack, (to me) is just not there anymore.
Oh sure, they're all great musicians, it's still great music, and I still
enjoy listening to it... but it's just not the same.
Flame away if you must, but that's my opinion.
I'm off to sit in the 'dwelling' corner with Joshua, and pout...

they had a choice? I know that their previous label folded, and that's why
they left, rather than being bounced due to poor sales or leaving for lack
of support (a la Kings X)......
They probably had more than Atlantic in the running. With John Kalodner
signing Iron Maiden, Great White, and Ratt on Portrait/Sony, I'm sure he gave
it some consideration. Even though "Hear In The Now Frontier" wasn't a
runaway success, QR does have that "cult" fan base (not unlike DT and to a
larger extent Rush) that record labels look for. Although Atlantic totally
botched the job w/ King's X, they seem to have done pretty well w/ Rush.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of a push they get.

So, given that Three Minute Warning was the absolute peak of Liquid
Tension I (I hardly listen to anything else off that CD), there was no
such thing as "peak" on the Explorers' Club disc. :-)
But now to something completely different... I received Kevin Moore's
"This Is A Recording" and Spastic Ink's "Ink Complete" just this morning
and am listening to the latter... It's going to be a busy... weekend. All
I can say for now is that the Jarzombek bros are nuts and should seek
professional help, dismantled joints or not. :-)
As for Dream Theater content... I'm starting a petition to get Dream
Theater fulfill their promise, expressed thru James LaBrie's mouth, and
return to Budapest this year. This YEAR, goddamnit. :-) I want Mike P. to
sign another one of my Spice Girls' T-shirts. (Hi! Cross out Ginger once
again!)

This is prog-metal with blistering guitar work and shredding keys
by Vitalij Kuprig of Artention. I bought this after hearing Greg's
work on Vitalij's first cd High Definition. I've never heard of drummer
Jon Doman, but his IS da man, especially on a surprisingly
fresh cover of Rush's La Villa Strabiato. I don't have any other GH
cd's but I understand they are more towards fusion than prog.
I plan on buying some soon.
Ice Age-The Great Divide
The first thing that strikes me about this cd is how much the
singer sounds like Dennis DeYoung of Styx (with just a touch
of Meatloaf) Now I don't know about you, but I love Styx, so
needless to say I like this band. They have a big sound for
only four guys. Some DT influences, but no clones.
Jordan Rudess-Listen
Found this at Laser's Edge for $6! This is what I call
prog-pop. Very good poppy songs with prog elements
and of course great keys and amazing solos. JR has
a good voice and I wouldn't be surprised to see him
doing some back-up vox for DT. There is also a female
vocalist on about half the tracks, which is nice.

I got this over a week ago, but I'll be dammed if I have
found time to listen to it. Too much other new stuff!

It only took an additional 3 days to get the cd, but still... am I wrong to

No you're not wrong. That's the same expectation that I had. I thought
along the same lines as you that there must be some "initial X amount of
cds" that CDNow arranged to have ready and would order more (creating the
backorder deal) as needed. Now I've got this creepy feeling that they must
wait to see if 100 people pre-order and then order something like 120
(laugh) from the distributors.

And obviously no one is taking that away from you.
It ain't gonna change though, and the only point I was trying to make
was that in the context of a new DT album having JUST been released -
and in this case one in which Mike (and I'm sure the others) are very
high on - it was just creates a negative vibe happenin' (ged, I'm old
:), if the jam becomes dominated by flame wars over which way is better.
It's one thing to discuss it rationally, another to start bringing in
shit like 'they sucked with this sound, or when this guy left, it was
the worst/best thing that EVER happened'
Look I'm sure the guys want to hear criticism as much as praise.

Story i heard (unconfirmed, of course) was that the band shopped the record around, and was considering offers from 3 labels. They settled for the offer from Atlantic; they now have a little logo to put the CD and booklet so they can start pumping out copies of the record and finally get it in stores. Yeah!!!

Yes - if you look at the same Modern Drummer I cited before (right before FII was released - MP's is the cover article) it has a picture of both kits ("big purple monster" and "ol' faithful", I believe he said). The smaller kit was a four-piece and was a (small) part of the kit he used for the I&W sessions and subsequent tour.

Hey Josh, I agree with you. I like the Kevin Moore era DT better than = the Derek era. And I also like the Awake production better than FII. = Somebody said FII sounds like mush, and I can't agree more. The Awake = sound is awesome: crisp, clean, and friggin enormous!!! =20
I was also comparing Live at the Marque with OIAL, and I have to say I = like Live at the Marque better. Maybe it's the songs - OIAL is kind of = FII dominated, and that's my least favorite album. Maybe it's the mix, = I don't know. I just like the feel of LATM better - there seems to be = more energy there.
As always taste is a personal thing and there is no right or wrong here. = Don't get me wrong, I like the Derek stuff, just not as much as the = Kevin stuff. The sound and songs just seemed so much more cohesive = during the KM days... Maybe to my ears there's just a clash between = Derek and John's sounds...
Enough of that. Can't wait to hear the new LTE in 5 days!
