Lol, I caught someone's attention. Mike, I should tell you that
your "singing" was one of my most memorable moments from the concert..
that and screaming out "Play Acid Rain!" with my boyfriend and getting
some strange looks from Tony.
Art, thanks again for sending me the clip from SoC.. I had a real
good laugh ;)
About Austin Powers.. yep, there was a reference to Alan Parson's
project, namely that Dr. Evil's weapon to destroy the world was
developed by Dr. Parsons, and so APP was going to be the name of his
plan to destroy the world.

actually mike didn't go to berkleY.. he attended berkleE which is in boston
rather than berkley, california..
but to answer your question.. berkley is an INCREADIBLE school.. for most
any buisness or liberal arts degree berkley is top notch.. it's location is
about 20 minutes south east of san frasisco.. the campus is beautiful and
walking distance from the famous telegraph ave..
it's quite a school..
all right i'm just giving you shit..
i'm planning on attending berklee myself.. that is if i get accepted
(fingers crossed).. tuition is pretty high so MY only option is a
scholorship or financial aid of sorts.. (again.. fingers crossed)..
but it seems to be one of the best if not the best jazz school around..
bad part is it's said to be a SEA of guitarists and drummers.. you gotta be
damn good and committed to get anything out of it.. (that's ok.. i'm both)
:).. anyways..
i just thought i'd let you know you spelled it wrong (our resident grammar

wow! I can't describe what I'm hearing! It just rocks so hard! My
favorite has to be another diemsion, it is just so unpredictable. Also, at
the end of Another Dimension, Mike does a little Austin Powers
impersonation. this CD is sooo awesome...I can't to hear the new DT cd with
Jordan...
About JLMB...Man! I was listening to it this weekend to hear what the
unknown part was ( I haven't listened to it in a while so I had to refresh
my memory.) and I knew it was his hats...but I was in Texas playing a
festival with my band so I couldn't send it in. Oh well.....I guess the
best person to answer that would be the one who wrote it! If you read this

Actually, I was going to say something, but I didn't want everyone to think
I was a dick. :) Doh!
Anyway, to actually answer Thor's initial question as best I can...
Read the FAQ. It all ought to be there. :) Here's the URL.
http://www.dreamtheater.net/faq-idx.htm
Nevermind, I just read the FAQ and it's not there. (Or not where it should
be, anyway). Here's from memory...
Mike Portnoy, John Myung, and John Petrucci all attended the Berklee school
of music for a couple of semesters before they decided to leave their
schooling to persue their band "Majesty" which was gaining a following and
looked like it might head somewhere if they devoted themselves to it. (which
I'm glad they did).
Now, Kevin Moore attended that one music college in Northern New York, but I
have to kick myself as I can't remember the name of the place. I'm not
positive, but I think it was the same Julliard Schoold of Music that Jordan
attended. Blah. Anyway, my knowledge is muddled as to whether he received
his degree in education from there, but as I can remember he took the same
course as the rest of the band and forsook continuing his education to
persue the band.
Derek... I think Derek was a full fledged Berkee grad, but I never
researched Derek's past too much. :) Sorry. He did attend Berklee though.
Jordan was shipped off to the Julliard School of Music when he was 9 years
old and finished his elementary education there. Then as he entered the
college level courses at Julliard with full scholarships, he bailed out not
long after entering to, as with all of the others, persue a career in music.
I'm getting the idea that completing courses at these schools is a waste of
time? Maybe? hehehe.
Kevin James LaBrie was an avid singer from a young age, singing in the
church choir and with his father's barbershop quartet in Canuckland. He
received operatic training from a somewhat reknowned vocal coach whose name
I'm clueless of. (heh, I read this in an old metal edge a long time ago).
Sang for a band called Winter Rose, and was selected by DT from a group of
piss poor auditionists for the most part to take the place of ejected
vocalist Charlie Dominici. heheh. At least I thought they were piss-poor.
Never was a John Arch fan and I've heard terrible stories about Chris
Cintron. :)
I know too much about DT for my own good. What's really sad is that there
are people out there who can fill in the blanks that I had to leave in
there. heheheh. And I'm not talking about Mr. Portnoy either. :)
There's my official DTC for the month. Time to spam. YAY!

Not so much nostalgia for me. I've only been
listening to Dream Theater for something like eight or
nine months. By the time I got into this band, Derek
was on his way out. I missed The Kevin Years
obviously. But I do like the albums with Kevin's
talents moreso than FII. And yet OIALT is the only CD
I've *ever* bought that I liked immediatley, so there
ya go. I forgot where I was going with this... :o)

Not me. I just graduated high school and I don't have
a job. The highlight of my days are updating my
website, downloading mp3s and checking out the 'jam
happenings. God I need a life...

You know, if my band ever gets big and famous (which it won't, but
nevertheless it's a hypothetical situation that I'm sure most musicians
have considered) and has its own heavily used mailing list, I'm going to
have to make sure I'm subscribed to it so that whenever someone gives any
of my backing vocals any lip, I can just be like Mike Portnoy and log on
and say,"Hey! They pay me to play this darned instrument thing here and
if they're careless enough to put a microphone in front of me, then let's
just hope the sound guy has quick reflexes cutting my level." Having a
band member subscribed to the list is also a great way to settle some of
those weird back-and-forth debates about obscure stuff that only us fans
have the time to seriously ponder :) Anyway, that's my obligatory post
(complete with horrendously long run-ons and parenthetical phrases) for
the next month or two, so in the meantime I'll...
SEE YOU IN THE FUNNY PAPERS!!!

Mike was right 100%. Just because one member leaves does not mean the
whole band changes. Personnally, ACOS and FII are better in my eyes than
the 3 with kevin. the lyrics of Hollow Years is what hooked me on the
band, not "how fast they can play" or time sig changes. I appreciate that
too but I also love just to listen because it's good music and not totally
analyze it to every extenet.
Did Metallica change it's name because Dave left, or Cliff died? And what
about Mcgovny? he was a original member. Shit, Queensryche is more
Queensryche now (the new stuff) than HITNF because Degarmo took control of
the band. They should have called taht album. (Chris and 4 other guys
that hardly had input on the music.) -hehe

Occording to my "import" demo, John, Mike and John met at Berkley in thier
first semester. John and John had played with Kevmo before in their
hometown. Moore went to Fredonia's school of music. I think they only
completed 1 year, 1985-1986 In march, some crappy singer "Thank god he is
gone" Chris Collins joined them and they recorded the 6 track demo. They
never returned after that, and the rest is history.
PS Mike, that QR shirt is cool! Do you still have it. Where was that

<< I thought it was just two pedals for the same hi-hat (like a double bass
pedal for one bass drum). >>
I'm not a drummer but the reason for two open hi-hats is usually so one is
always closed and the other one can be opened and closed. Reason being:
when a drummer is playing double bass, he can hit the "always closed" hi-hat
without getting a TERRIBLE sounding open hi-hat (because he'd have to use his
foot to close it and its occupied with other kick). This one is usually
placed near the ride since its kinda being used like a ride but with a
different "flavor". The other one is the standard set up so you CAN do the
the open and closed work with your foot.
That is the MAIN reason, but not the only reason. The reason is much
different than "double bass". I'm NOT a drummer, but I'm pretty sure this is
the main reason. The remote pedal thing allows you to place the the hi-hats
(via some type of cable) anywhere other than on the actual hi-hat
stand/pedal. Simple idea.

A little boy is waiting for his Mom to come out of the changing room while
shopping with her at a department store. The little boy gets bored so he
decides to have a look around. When his Mom comes out of the changing
room, she finds her little boy sliding his hand up a store dummy's skirt.
"GET YOUR HAND OUT OF THERE," she shouts.
"DON'T YOU KNOW THAT US WOMEN HAVE GOT TEETH DOWN THERE."
The little boy quickly snatches his hand away and thanks his lucky stars
that nothing serious happened. So, for the rest of his life, this poor little boy
grows up thinking that all women have got teeth down below.
By the time the little boy reaches the age of sixteen, he finds himself a
girlfriend. One night, while her parents were out of town, she invites him over
for a little action. After a few hours of making out and grinding on the sofa,
she asks him to go a little bit further.
"What do you mean", he asks
She replies, "Well, why don't you put your hand down there" while pointing to
her privates.
"HELL NO," he cries. "You've got teeth down there"
"No, I don't" she responds.
"Yes, you do," he says. "My Mom told me that you do."
"No, I don't," she insists. "Here, look for yourself." With that, she pulls down
her pants and gives him a little peek.
"No, I'm sorry" he says. "My Mom already told me that all women have
teeth down there."
"OH FOR CHRIST'S SAKE"!! she screams. With that, she whips off her panties,
throws her legs behind her head, and says, "Look, I don't have any teeth down
there."
He replies, "Well, with the condition of those gums I'm not surprised"!!!!!

Metal Hammer (UK) has just printed this review of LTE2:
This'll scare the hell out of 'em. The return of this new prog
supergroup featuring three members of Dream Theater and bassist
extraordinaire Tony Levin, it's a far cry from anything remotely
commercially sensible and so way off the mark credibility wise, you've
just got to love it. Jazzily experimental and progressively indulgent
and totally instrumental, it rocks like a mutha. Funnily enough, it's
far more stomachable than Dream Theater too!
