I too was disappointed when PL changed styles radically on "One=20
Second" but I must say that I really enjoy listening to "Host". Maybe =
    it's
because I had accepted that the band which put out some of my all-time
favorite albums (esp. "Icon" and "Draconian Times") is no more.=20
If you listen to the new album without prejudice (oh my God, a George
Michael reference!) and without thinking about where the band came
from, it's a brilliant, modern rock album with electronic stuff to spice
things up. It's still drenched with melancholy and atmosphere and -
most importantly - the songs are excellent.
At least give it a try. It's much better than "One Second", probably
because they've learned how to handle all the electronic gear
properly and can focus on the song writing again.

This post isn't about food (but the next one will be).

         CHAZRUSHAM@aol.com writes

"I think it was Amanda that I am agreeing with on a past posting
but Mike's fills are getting predictable..."

Actually that was me, unless Amanda snuck one in that I missed.
I said something along the lines of air drumming on my first
listen and "air-filling" the same things (essentially) that Mike
was playing. But you know something? I would say that most rock
(prog-rock too) drummers do a lot of the same fills. It's not
a bad thing, but falls into each drummer's "bag of tricks." I know
I tend to play similar sounding fills. How many times have you
heard Neil Peart do a 16th and 32nd note single stroke fill going
from the high toms to the low (the roundhouse fill)? No one accuses
him of being cheesy (at least not around me :) ). How many times
have you heard Vinnie Colaiuta do turn-arounds on the ride when
playing odd time? How about Tim "Herb" Alexander's double bass
triplet patterns? See what I mean?

Drumming is, by it's nature, a fairly repetitive activity as your
primary purpose is time-keeping. Doing that in an exciting and
creative way that relates to the melodies is what makes the instrument
so fascinating. Who cares if your licks are similar sounding? If
they make good rhythmic sense and carry your unique feel, I say
         fuck it and go!

         /me fucks it and goes.

]From the past CDs I have listened too, I have always been very critical of
the music. For LTE 2 I thought I would just listen and enjoy. For me it was
much more enjoyable this way. Some people on this list should try it, and
stop complaining about Portnoy's drum fills being too predictable. For me
everything sounded great, and Portoys drumming continues to kick ass. If all
his fills aren't as complicated and original as you would like them to be,
then why don't you get a band and come up with a new fill for every song you
create with your band. Once again the CD kicks ass and all the members of
LTE have improved, especially Tony's speed on the chapman stick.

Well Folks, here everyone goes again. I believe it was sometime in
Feb. when this subject was debated to shit as it seems it might be again.
Its the ever-changing definition of progressive music. As much as everyone
says it, i do not believe that it is simply "music which progresses through
time". IMO, most music progresses through time. All art does. As the
imagination grows with creativity, the results take a progressive form. So,
what is progressive music?? For sure, it has a distinct feel and sound to
it. Just like country, r&b and all that other "music". Many bands could be
labeled as progressive in way or another, but certain bands take it to the
next level (Yes, DT, King Crimson, etc.). These are what most music fans
label real progressive music. Besides all this B.S.----FUCK LABELS. I just
wish music stores would have all their music in alphabetical order instead of
by what they believe that particular music should be labeled as. Feedback
and/or flames are welcome as always.

Hmmm.... I haven't had a chance to make it through all of LTE yet,
(actually, only halfway through Another Dimension) and I can already see
GOBS of improvement over the last album. The last one I wasn't too fond of,
Kindred Spirits and Universal Mind being the only songs I actually liked,
the rest I though were OK, but too wanky.

Now LTE 2 that I'm hearing is wanky, but MUCH more thematic and structured
than LTE 1. The playing is tighter than James' leather pants (Now THAT's
tight!). It sounds to me like everyone's just going with the flow rather
than trying to show each other up, which is great. If any of the performers
on this album came up to me and said, "Hey, Korg, I'm the best" I'd kick
them in the balzak and tell them "So you can play fast, but will that keep
me warm on the long, cold nights? I don't think so. That don't impress me
much." I do likes this album, tho.

    Or something. :)

On the other hand, I think this CD will kick ass for playing NFS - High
    Stakes to.

    Hey folks...

Three new shows up in mp3 format on my FTP server (24.5.106.175 - anonymous).

    1) Pink Floyd - 2/28/80 from Nassau Colliseum (2 disc) 2) Medeski Martin and Wood 11/15/98 (1 disc) 3) Bela Fleck 4/5/98 (2 discs)

The MMW and Fleck shows were uploaded to me by The Reverend (thanks!), but unfortunately neither have setlists available. I'll be out of town this weekend so I can't look for them myselves. If anyone could help me with venue/location/setlists for these shows I'd really appreciate it. Both are excellent quality, so hopefully some folks can download and share their knowledge. :)

Again, I'm out of town until Monday, so if the server has a prob (tho' it hasn't yet) it might not be fixed 'till then. Also, I can only allow 6 users on at a time, so it gets busy (which results in a bunch of emails for me). All I can tell you is 1) DO NOT user a browser to download these files and 2) please keep trying - you'll get through eventually. :) Take care all, and I hope you enjoy these.

Sure, that's "Ripples..." off Genesis' 1976 A Trick Of The Tail album, which is the first Genesis album after Peter Gabriel left (Phil is singing and playing drums). Excellent album, lots of great songs on that one; "Dance On A Volcano," "Entangled," "Squonk," "Robbery, Assault And Battery," "A Trick Of The Tail," "Los Endos." If you were wary of buying a post-Gabriel Genesis album, ATOTT may pleasantly surprise you.

I haven't posted in an ice age, and this is a topic of interest to me as a Tull fan, so I thought I'd give it a go. A Passion Play is definitely an odd item when it comes to CD rereleases. On the LP, there is the first part of APP, which sorta fades out into spacey type music not unlike the bridging of Thick As A Brick, but comes to a rather abrupt halt, after which John Evan does The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles. I'm not sure if it's banded as another track on the LP or not. Slightly less than halfway in, the side ends with an orchestral flourish. Flip it over, and it begins again, ends with some funny vox, and then the spacy type music comes back in as if nothing had happened. Again, I'm not sure if there is a track band here or not. The CD I have has only one track, which has everything on the album as one track (including the "bonus" at the end..."Steve! Caroline!"). There are probably ones with three tracks, ones with two, but I'm not sure. I know for a fact that the Mobile Fidelity audiophile release on CD (1998) has in fact about 16 tracks which each have names, like any "normal album". The flow is preserved so long as you have a normal CD player that doesn't automatically insert space between tracks. There's been a lot of discussion about this on alt.music.jethro-tull. If anyone wants to know more (there's LOTS more), just e-mail me privately, as this is a DT list.

How about other new CD's that aren't in the Magna Carta series..

Are the other 2 Symphony X cd's as good as "Divine Wings of Tragedy".

Is "Steinway To Heaven" any Good... on a scale of 1 to 10 (one being bert and ernie on keyboard and 10 being God......God can be replaced with either Rochmoninoff or KevMo)

I want so fast as hell and really cool keyboard and or piano songs to listen to..(feel free to make other suggestions).

A couple more long songs that weren't mentioned:

"The End" (The Doors) - the very song that got the Doors fired from their steady gig at the Whiskey A-Go-Go. One of the more eerie songs around. Still gives me chills.

"Alice's Restaurant" (Arlo Guthrie) - a radio station plays this one only on Thanksgiving. Damn funny at times.

As for the best bar music by the Doors, L.A. Woman is great, but you can't beat Morrison Hotel. "Roadhouse Blues" is a perfect rough bar song. "Alabama Song" has to be one of the best drinking songs around :).

I really need to keep up with my jams. I missed all the Fear & Loathing talk. Great soundtrack, BTW.

As for VIndaloo, my old boss made a mean one, and it did have potatoes in it (and yes, you can ferment potatoes and make a drink. Isn't that what Vodka is made of?). One of the great lines uttered on TV:

"Oh yeah, lager. The only thing that can kill a VIndaloo" - Dave Lister (Red Dwarf)

Just got my shipping confirmation from CD Now for my LTE2 order. Can't wait to hear it.
