    Hey,

Can anybody point me to a transcript of the JR Artist Shop chat
that happened the other week...? I missed it and they don't seem to
    update their page very often.

            Thanks in advance...

My guitar knowledge is about on par with any of the following:

    1) A squirrel with a pitch fork rammed through its forehead
    2) Big Bird on a drunken rampage
    3) Blind Melon

What I want to know is, at the DT clinics, do you have to know what
they're talking about to appreciate it? Is it like a music lesson, or is
it more like VH-1 storytellers, but a little more technical? Either way,
I'll go, but I want to know ahead of time just how much of a damned fool
    I'll be looking like.

For that matter, who can tell me all about these things? I'd like that
    very much.

Apologies for the lack of DT content but I thought that the jammers would like to know this information:

If any of you live in the DC/Baltimore area there is someone in town this weekend you may want to venture out to see in concert.

Stanley Jordan will be playing at Blues Alley in DC for two shows nightly this weekend, March 4,5 and 6th. I believe the shows are at 7pm and 10pm. You may want to call the club for more info. He is an absolutely phenominal guiter player with unique style of playing guitar.

I just heard it on the radio myself and I'm trying to find a way to get there. Hope to see some jammers there.

    Hey gang -

A little NDTC here... I was wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions or recommendations as to where I can order some really good CD Storage Towers.

I am specifically looking for rotating towers with a capacity of 400 or greater. I have one already from LaserLine, but they've since discontinued the line, I guess, cuz it's not on their website (www.laserline.com). The largest capacity one they have is like 320 or something. Are there any other places on the web like LaserLine where I may be able to find rotating, large capacity CD towers?

Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Private e-mail please, unless you think this would be useful for the general public; in that case, feel free to post to the Jam. Thanks, folks!!

    >2.) What about on of the greatest guitarists on earth? >JIMI HENDRIX

Shouldn't that be the The Greatest Guitarist IN the Earth? hmm.... just kidding...

I'm constantly amazed at people's confusion of FACT and OPINION. remember kiddos that stating an opinion as if it were true does not instanly make it a fact, unless the other person doesnt have a clue what your talking about...

    >escuse me for this e-mail, but for me it's important >that nobody thinks bad of my band. > >Stay prog. >Ivan - CMKY.

ok ok.. I think some people are carrying over some leftover enmity from the long since unmentionable tribute. This tribute seems more like a marketing attempt to help some relatively unknown bands get some exposure. Disc 1 says "hey, we love DT and are good enough to play it"; Disc 2 says " hey we also write songs, maybe you'll listen and like ... no?" If you just twist it around and think about it thus : a compilation of various little known prog bands with an extra disc of "well done" DT covers, then its not quite so nefarious is it?

I wonder if anyone that's screaming out "CLONE CLONE" has ever done something creatively only to have someone come along and dismiss it out of hand?

    >I got into a bit of an argument with a friend this weekend over DT. He >has never heard of them, and says that since this is the case, they must >not be any good. He obviously doesn't understand the politics behind a >band's popluarity. Believe me, I tried my best to make him understand >it, but he was too stubborn to listen to me.

I've gotten into this arguement several times..."if I've never heard of it then it mustn't be any good". I wonder if people hear the words that come out of their mouths the same as they hear it in their heads?

good does not equal popular popular does not equal good

good is a subjective judgement based upon personal taste. popular is the measure of how many people like similar things...

if you equate popular with good then you don't understand this distinction.

I might be tempted to try this, but am worried that it might be either (a) semi-illegal or (b) a fairly serious breach of netiquette. Experts, please inform.

Also, I have a question about Symphony X: I've seen a bunch of you RAVE long and loud about them, their guitar player, etc. My question is, just what style are they? Straight metal? Hard rock? Prog metal? Neo-prog? Other? Enough choices for ya? :-)

Sorry if this got posted twice, but I'm having Nutscrape troubles.

I couldn't agree more with this. From first hearing Ocean Machine on Paul Cashman's ytseradio show, I knew this guy was amazing. As for new Devin stuff, he was just in Japan making a guitar instructional video which may be for sale through the HevyDevy Records web site at http://members.home.net/hevydevy/ at some time in the future. You may also be able to find a Japanese EP of Christeen and 4 other songs not included on Infinity. There is also some info on Devin at http://www.usg-records.com. On the English page he is under Artists 2. There's also Zimmer's Hole, a side project of SYL whos latest album Devin produced and mixed. You can also order this through the web site. If anyone wants the latest copy of the newsletter you can email me, or go to the web site, where most of it is posted. The people at HDR are incredibly cool.. I should know cus I just got my Infinity postcard in the mail (nekkid Devin, for those of you have never seen the cover).

I agree that the Gypsy Kings is somewhat overkill... they've been played so much it's redundant but... don't totally disregard them just on that premise. An excellent soundtrack to check out is:

La Belle L'Histoire a French production with Beatrice Dalle and featuring the music of the Gypsy Kings.

Incredible. The Gypsy Kings are a good source of flamenco as their music is considered user friendly and because it's readily available. It's a shame that they have been relegated to the trash bin because consumerism likes to spit bands up and then chew them out. Look at that whole 'grunge' phenomena.

I also agree that Soundgarden is not grunge. They predated that 'movement' and have stated that their influences were bands like Black Sabbath. Just check out the Somms E.P. Their music is more complex, structured, darker and much heavier than other grunge 'gurus' such as Pearl Jam. They just happened to be from the same place, on the same scene, make it big around the same time. Although Bad Motor Finger is superlative I would go for Louder Than Love. Incredible richness and Chris Cornell is an excellent vocalist. Unlike his contemporaries such as Eddie Veddar and Layne Staley etc.

Don't get me wrong I don't mind Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains. I just think that you cannot compare them too Soundgarden.

    Musical taste though is subjective...

    Vanessa.

Hello! Alright, I guess I'm not saying things in the same order as my subject line, but who cares? Firsta, somebody was writing about james Murphy's new album and mentioned that Trent Gardner was in Spock's Beard. Dude, you must have mistaken Spock's Beard for Magellan, the band in which he actually is. Second, I really can't understand why so many people mention Fates Warning post Arch only, while I think that the Arch era was almost as good (at least Awaken the Guardian). Everybody should get ATG, it has incredible melodies and harmonies, and the songwriting is great. Last, I wanted to comment on the Platypus CD. I like this CD a lot. The musicianship is great, and the songs are very cool. Some parts of the CD remind me of the following bands: Galactic Cowboys (I think that without Doug Pinnick the harmonies sound more like the GC than like KX), Dixie Dregs, Damn the Machine (funny how some people have mentioned them recently, while I was thinking that Platypus sometimes sounds like them), among others. Great CD people, all of the musicians shine on it. Alright, that's it.

While I'm thinking about this one, he's the vocalist for Testament! They are a pretty awesome thrash metal band. Alex Skolnick plays guitar (or I assume he still does). Just wanted to pass along a little info to give back all the great info you, the jammers, have provided for me. Which brings me to this:

Thank you to all that informed me of Damn the Machine!! It's disappointing they didn't release more. I really dug it!! I'll have to get that "Return To Metropolis".

Also, I finally got FII!!! : ) I must hang my head in shame for not getting it sooner!! : ( But I love it. It is way different from the other albums IMHO!! It's a little mellower in places, and kind of "spooky" in others. I'm going to listen to it about 100 more times before I make my final decision about it, though!! : )

It took me 50,000 listens to understand the LTL intro, but I think it just now clicked. Now, ever since calvin explained it so nicely a while ago, I've understood that the keys are in 15/8, or something similar to that - whenever I listen, I count 15 beats. And in 50,000 listens, I never ever got the drums, when they start. And now I do! I really think I get it now! Those damn drums are in 4/4, right? right? someone? it's so freaky! If you listen to the thing from the drum perspective, you don't hear the keys as triplets, you hear them as 16th notes, except there's 15 of them instead of 16, so the 4 notes keep shifting out of pattern, and it sounds like something being played backwards. Now I'm pretty sure all of this was explained - in fact I think i even saved that jam - but I want to know if what I said makes any sense, because it would please me to know that I was able to rephrase the explanation in my own layman's terms.

Did I get this right? Someone please tell me.
