damn i thought part of being into music was to help others. i may not be the best bassist in the world but i think helping someone learn or get info on something that interests them thus expanding their minds is worth the time. and who said we were getting paid? its not money that were on this list. its to discuss a common interest. helping others is its own reward. if u have to spend time bitching about someone asking a question go to the alt.fuckoff.postings site .. by the way. i may not post on here but ive subscribed for the last 2 years. and i dont recall those sites being listed. if im wrong fine. i would have loved it if someone was nice enough to help me find things like that when i first started getting into prog music. its one of the more obscure and hard to find types of music. and maybe u should grow the hell up. sg--rob gaul

In the CD's liner notes, right below 'the guests' list, there's another = list that specifies from which bands those musicians are from. For everyone el= se interested, here's the list:

Clark Brown - Geezer Chuck Billy - Testament John West, Vitalij Kuprij - Artension Trent Gardner - Magellan Chris Long - Under Matt Guillory, Jeremy Colson - Dali's Dilemma Steve DiGiorgio - Sadus.

I think he played on Testament's 'Demonic' as well.

Even though I got FtM just one week ago, I can tell you 'Convergence' is=

better. For example, Devin Townsend's vocals on Convergence are, by far, better than Clark Brown's and Chris Long's on FtM. Deen Castronovo's performance is better on Convergence also. FtM isn't a bad album, though.=

Alex Skolnick hasn't played in Testament since 'Low'; James Murphy playe= d on it. James Murphy also plays on the new Testament CD (which will be releas= ed in the following months) but he didn't play on 'Demonic'.

    Take care, Esteban.

I only have 1 Symphony X album, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, but based on this, I can say that most of the time, they are a more symphonic type of prog metal in the way Yes can get on songs like Awaken and And You and I, and less of a DT/Fates style. Not to say they cant get heavy. I find them heavier than DT, and their singer can get on the verge of cookie monster stuff sometimes, but can also shoot into the stratosphere.

    Very good band, nonetheless.

I've heard so much about this album (Ocean Machine) from you guys (and gals). What is the name of the band that wrote it? Same name? When was it released.

I'm heading out to the store friday to pick up some of the CD's you guys have suggested, I only know 2 people besides me who really like (or really know about) Dream Theater, and one is about 180 miles away. So i feel alone out here, until i started getting this newsletter. Thanks guys for keeping me sane! Anyway, the CD's are: Symphony X: The Divine Wings of Tragedy Spock's Beard: The Beard is Out There Live Marillion: Best of Both Worlds LTE & EC: AOI and possibly Rhapsody: Symphony of Enchanted Lands

Are these good choices? Should i get another album by these bands (other than what i listed).

Last thing. I know it's sometimes hard to put bands in categories, but what category do you place Dire Straits and Jethro Tull in? I always considered them prog-rock!? I could also see them catagorized as just rock. Just need some feedback on this if you have the time for a fellow jammer.

If I understand the MD format as well as I think I do, the quality of MD recordings today is a lot better than it was. I remember reading that early on, the sampling rate was absolutely atrocious, and is now getting closer to what one would consider no noticeable loss, but that it's still not as good as CD or DAT.

Of course, it all depends on what's noticeable to you, and what's not. You know there are people out there that swear by LPs because, when in great condition, they sound better than CDs, because CDs, even though sampled really well, are still digital and therefore, by definition, lossy. These people remind me of a quote (I forget the attribution): "Musicians listen to music; audiophiles listen to noise."

There are also people out there that listen to Hanson, so just remember to get a little background on the person who's nipples you're accepting.

The moral of the story (as usual): YMMV. -d

Symphony X is heavy neoclassical prog-metal. CHECK THESE GUYS OUT!!! Expect some ball-bustingly heavy rhythm guitar, 100% SHRED guitar solos, fantasy inspired lyrics, and fantastic vocals. I highly recommend you get The Divine Wings of Tragedy (my fave), but Twilight In Olympus is very good too.

Firstly, KUDOS to AL for helping the guy out.

Secondly, to AyameYuki: Great fucking plan. Let's scare any would-be DT lovers away from A. The Ytsejam B. Maybe even away from DT!

By the way - - not everybody is an internet expert. If he does what you say to do (and assuming he adds DOT COM) he's going to land at www.dreamtheater.com, which has absolutely NOTHING to do with DT.

He unfortunately doesn't. James Murphy replaced him on their LOW album, and I'm not sure who played lead on their Demonic disc. I can tell you that since he left Testament, Alex played lead guitars on Savatage's Handful of Rain (excellent CD), and his latest project is called The Skol-Patrol (jazz solo project, evidently).

Oh, and you are correct: Testament kicks ass. I highly recommend The Ritual to anybody who's a fan of older Metallica style metal.
