Tori has obviously heard of Kate. Compare the album cover of Little
Earthquakes (Tori in a wooden box) to the US version of The Kick Inside
    (Kate in a wooden box)...

BTW, anybody know what Kate's been up to lately?

I don't particularly like him that much, but he's played for people like =
John Fogerty and John Mellencamp. In Modern Drummer (November 1997) , it =
mentioned that he would be touring with Smashing Pumpkins in 98-99. They =
have also been running full page TAMA ads lately with him, mentioning the =
Smashing Pumpkins tour and the new TAMA drums he's using on the tour.

Ive always thought the DT musicians were pretty well known amung other musicians.
Petrucci had, for a LONG time, a column in Guitar World, but he doesnt do that anymore.
I think I heard somewhere that Myung writes for a Bass magazine, and my band's drummer
has mentioned that Portnoy is featured a lot in Modern Drummer. Plus, both Myung and
Petrucci have signature guitar/bass models avalible, and I heard somewhere that Portnoy
might be getting a signature cymbol line from Sabian, thought I dont know if this was just
a rumor or not. And Petrucci is just about Mesa/Boogie's biggest endorser (judging from
the huge feature about him on their web page). So I would think that in the musician end
of the the music biz, Dream Theater (or at least the members of DT) are pretty big.

About ticket prices...Ive seen DT twice when they were headlining, and both prices were
about 25$. This was in NYC once, and on Long Island the other time, so maybe they're
more popular in their local area.

It's a hungarian band formed by the ex-leader of another hungarian band
called Aftercrying. If you haven't heard any of the 6 albums of
Aftercrying, start listening to it immediately, it's a killer!
Mixing jazz, contemporary music and (in the latest ones) a heavier rock,
this band will blow your mind!
The pianist, Vedres Csaba left the band in 94, and formed Townscream two
    years after that.

I believe it was Amanda who delicately inquired as to the identity of the Pumpkins' new drummer, Kenny Aronoff. You would know him as John Mellencamp's studio drummer for years and years. He's the guy in the videos with male pattern baldness. He also does EXTENSIVE session work (on the scale of guys like Vinnie Colaiuta) and I believe he also appears on Neil Peart's Buddy Rich tribute album. He is also a proessor of drums and percussion at Indiana University and a member of the board of directors of the Percussive Arts Society (at least he was at some point). He was supposed to be the new drummer for Journey (I'm sure Mike Ostrich will correct me if I'm mistaken on this one) but he landed the Smashing Pumpkins audition at the same time and elected to go that route. Apparently it was a style of music he'd never done before and that's what led him to Billy Corgan and company. So there's the scoop on Kenny. -Rahul Ananda-

I am not supporting the post you're responding to, but I will point out that you're a wonderful hypocrite for doing this publicly, since you tried so hard to pretend that you were far more mature than the rest of the jam a couple months back. Good thing you can take your own advice. Or not. Get back in the trash can.

This post is why I had to write again...

    >Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (a classic, early, improv jazz recording)

This isn't that early for jazz. Excellent simple disc to get if you want to start listening. For those who are going to try to get into some jazz tunes, here's the whole trick of the trade: Listen to the melody and internalize it before listening to the solos. That may mean stopping and rewinding at first, but you'll get faster at it. Most of the time the head (melody) is repeated before the solos begin, and it should be easy to internalize it. Just sing it along with the album, out loud or in your head. This will make the winding confusing solos make a lot more sense, and you'll begin to understand who so many people love jazz. :) It worked for me... now I've got about 150 jazz discs already.

    >Steely Dan - Aja (a classic jazz-rock album)

ARGH! ARRRRGHH!!!! You did NOT just call Steely Dan jazz... tell me you were kidding. PLEASE!

    >From: "Isaac Trumbo" <inferno_one@hotmail.com>

    >al dimeola - casino >mahavishnu orchestra - between nothingness and eternity >weather report - heavy weather > >three GREAT fusion albums..

The problem with these three is that it's not a stretch to call any of them prog. It's not really jazz in the sense that it's a lot of improv over specific changes. Casino is very composed (one of my favorite discs btw) Mahavishnu is very free (something like free jazz, so I suppose it qualifies, but it's not the direction I think most people are thinking when they say "jazz" you know?) and Weather Report, while being the most fusiony of the bunch, is very similar to Casino in form. I don't really consider DiMeola to be a jazz guitarist. I consider him to be a master musician, and one of my greatest influences technically and musically, but he rarely does anything that would fall under the category of jazz in my book.

    >for traditional jazz get: >the increadible jazz guitar of wes montgomery

    Now we're talkin'!

Allow me to make some recommendations: For those of you into shred guitar, try Jimmy Bruno. His album Live at Birdieland features uncanny improv and a whole lot of technique (sorry folks, he IS faster than JP. Not that this means anything about anything to anyone, including me : ) It's a trio, with an amazing vibe, playing traditional jazz but with such an intensity and an easy of flow that anyone on this list could understand what's going on, regardless of past experience. Pat Martino: El Hombre. Pat has the craziest chromatic sense. He treats every chord as the dorian chord of it's chord scale (meaning that if he were to play over G7 he would treat it like D-7) and gets some weird, weird results out of it. I need more of his stuff. I've been told that Stone Blue is a great album, but haven't bought it yet. El Hombre is from the 60's and is sort of obnoxious sounding with the organ and the percussion, but you get used to it quick and get into some great phrasing. Not the best thing to start out with, but once you're into it, you'll dig it. Charlie Parker: Now's the Time. This is BeBop. This is where it's at... where all the modern guys get a lot of their ideas. This is a must have album in your collection. Also check out the Yardbird Suite double disc for a great collection. Pretty reasonably priced. Pat Metheny: Bright Size Life. This is his album on his own... almost 20 years ago. Jaco on bass. This album changed all of jazz. Some despise him, others emulate him, and none can deny what he's capable of. Great phrasing... very unorthodox. He is self taught (IGNORE what ANY Berklee guys or Miami guys tell you about him "going to their schools" ... Metheny did a semester at Miami, where he got a C or a D in his one guitar class, and only taught at Berklee from what his bio says. Incidentally he was like 17 years old when he was teaching at Miami. :) Generally any of the following are great investments: Charlie Parker (anything) Wes Montgomery (Anything) Coltrane (the earlier stuff is more "Jazz") Miles, Monk, Ron Thal (he's not jazz, but can I ever post without recommending his music?) Mike Stern (anything) John Scofield (Anything).... there are more good jazz cds than bad jazz cds. Anything on Original Jazz Classics is usually good. Go to a tower or a borders and pick up (just look at... you don't have to buy it) the Penguin jazz guide and get one of the higher rated albums. The most important thing is that you don't try to digest it all at once. Gotta hear the melody over the chords and through the solos.

    >NP: greg howe - introspection

Man... that album sucks, doesn't it? (J/K)

As for Metallica: They sold out. It's up to you whether or not you care. I personally don't care how many copies an album sells. Crap is crap no matter how it's packaged. Metallica TOTALLY CHANGED their music to sell more copies. That's fine. I respect their decision. I have never respected their musicianship anyways :). Argue the facts: Metallica changed their sound completely for the black album. By coincidence, they said it would be their heaviest album yet, (note that they swore they'd never do a video, cut their hair, or wear makeup, all of which they thrive on now) and it wasn't. They say they didn't sell out, but I believe this album was done on a new contract, and I believe they made more money off it than anything else they'd done to date (gee... and MTV and pop radio seemed to pick right up on their "non-sell-out" music). They made a conscious decision, in the face of a great deal of money, to opt for wealth over musical integrity. I respect their decision, since it's theirs to make. All subesquent music has been very very weak, which is the true shame, since heaviness was the band's only strong attribute (don't even tell me Lars is a great drummer, or Hammett studied with Satch, or Newsted can play bass at ALL. In fact, I just taught an 11 year old to play some of Newsted's "great" bass stuff, and a 13 year old to play Hammett solos. Am I a better teacher than Satch or does Hammett just blow?)

    Have a nice day.

Dan: I've often found that I'm much more familiar with certain band members before I'm familiar with a band. The case holds true with Dream Theater, as I knew *of* Mike Portnoy before I got into the band by way of various music publications/magazines/sale things such as the one you described. I also heard his work on Working Man and thought he was freaking amazing...But for some reason the name Dream Theater didn't stick in my head. Finally one day I couldn't find anything to buy in a CD shop, saw DT sitting there and said...HEY! I've heard of them.... (referring subconsciously to the "of Dream Theater" following the name of MP.) So I guess the point I'm getting at is.....I don't know :) Nevermind! NEXT!!!

Amanda: I'm not a Smashing Pumpkins fan, nor have I heard Arnoff, but I have however read numerous interviews with the man and have also seen the awards he's won. So unfortunately I cannot point to one specific album off hand, I can (and will heheh) say that yes, he was on some smashing pumpkins CDs, and has toured extensively with them. He was one of Tama's top award winners in Modern Drummers poll, bringing in awards like "best recorded performance" and so on. I think. So yeah....I don't know if that got to the point or not...NEXT!!

Joshua: For the jazz, just go pick up Chick Corea-The Leprechan or Mahavisnu Orchestra (sp?) - Inner Mounting Flame. You won't be disappointed.

Thats all for now. Be happy.

She wrote 'Wuthering Heights' we think at the age of 14 after studying the book aat school, but the record company kept her on hold until she was 18 to avoid the 'child star' tag. A good starter is "The Whole Story" -- it's kind of a greatest hits, with a version of Wuthering Heights with a new vocal (I've not heard ther old vocal, but perhaps it was a bit weak since she was 16 when she recorded the original)
